It’s an early kick-off for this week’s tips, taking in the ‘jornada’ 32 appetiser on Friday night between Girona and Real Betis (7.45pm).
Eighth against fifth, these two attractive sides play some lovely stuff, but whereas Girona have gone off the boil in recent times, conceding six to Real Madrid and five to Real Sociedad last Sunday, Betis have seized their opportunity to overtake neighbours Sevilla, winning four on the bounce as they enter the final phase of a season which will always be remembered for their 5-3 away win in the derby back in January.
The goals are flowing, forward Sergio León especially is in sparkling form, and here they have an opportunity to temporarily at least establish a six point advantage over their bitter rivals, and in doing so consolidate that fifth position.
The idea of backing the in-form Andalusian side at 5/2 away from home is too tempting to pass up; boss Quique Setién has them playing with stacks of confidence, and this seems a good time to be meeting the recently lacklustre hosts.
The only other recommendation for this weekend’s La Liga action comes at Madrid’s Metropolitano on Sunday afternoon (3.15pm), where Atlético can get the heavy lifting done early doors against 17th-placed Levante.
Cholo Simeone’s team don’t have a huge recovery time after their Europa League quarter final second leg in Lisbon, but at least it’s a short journey as they return to their pursuit of second place and finishing ahead of Real Madrid in the league.
Prior to their Madrid derby draw they were ahead at the interval in six consecutive games in all competitions, and despite their reputation as a brilliant defensive side they can get the job done in timely fashion against Levante, an outfit who can now sleep a little easier due to the eight point gap which has opened between them and the relegation places after three wins and a draw from their last four.
