The big race of the day will have the crowds flocking in good and early, and although there’s less recovery time for those still going strong late last night, with today welcoming the first afternoon card of the week in a town where today is what counts, tomorrow will take care of itself!
My fancy for the big one is Willie’ Mullins Themoonandsixpence - an improving seven year old Presenting gelding who is big on potential but light on experience.
With only two runs over fences in the bank he might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he has the perfect profile in a wide open contest, will love the ground and crucially has a low weight (the stats are compelling in that respect).
He’s a sound jumper from a top stable (who amazingly are yet to win this race), and if you consider Mullins threw him in the deep end in a hot race over the chase fences at the Punchestown Festival there can’t be too many doubts about his ability to shape up to this task from those who know him best.
I’ll be on each way.
It’s another stellar card at Glorious Goodwood, and in the opener (2.10pm) you have to be impressed by the unusually bullish attitude of trainer Mark Johnston about his Danehill Dancer filly Lady Eclair.
The winner of her last three (won six in nine) her progress has been staggering, and it could well be that we’re watching a Group class filly in a handicap.
Back her at a tasty each way price in this big field. She’s markedly up in trip to 2m 5f, but don’t be put off, she shapes as though she’ll be even better over further.
In the two year old Group 2 at 2.45pm I’ll be chucking in a small win single on a horse who’s impressed me so far with two wins from two starts; Richard Fahey’s Waltz Darling.
This is a major step up in class, but the stable are flying (especially with 2-y-o runners), and he strikes me as a coly who’ll be better over seven furlongs.
At a big price in a small field he could be some value.
In the mile and a half handicap at 4.00pm I’m hoping for a bounce back performance from John Dumlop’s Berling.
I was at Royal Ascot when he ran a cracker to finish fifth in a hot race having suffered terrible traffic problems, but the Montjeu colt was firing blanks next time out at Haydock and he needs to bring his ‘A’ game to the table here.
If he does he can win this, so take a chance and back him each way at a far more generous price than would have been the case had he come here direct from Royal Ascot.
There’s one more I fancy at Goodwood, and that’s Jeremy Noseda’s Dance East in the EBF Fillies’ And Mares’ Stakes at 5.10pm.
Back against her own sex I suspect she’ll benefit from the step up in trip to nine furlongs, and her trainer will be well pleased to have found this eminently winnable looking opportunity. Win bet.
Good luck!
