First up, it’s hats off to Yeats and connections – irrespective of what you backed in the race you’re watching the wrong sport if you weren’t roaring him home. The type of magic all too often absent from the Flat scene.
It’s another cracking day’s racing on Friday, and Barry Hills’s hugely exciting filly Ghanaati looks like the one to be with in a cracking renewal of the Coronation Stakes (3.45pm).
Hills won this four years ago with Maids Causeway, and in Guineas winner Ghanaati he looks to have a filly who’s at least as good. A 25/1 shot at Newmarket, she looked pretty special that day on what was only her third start, and can progress again.
Back her at 5/2 with any of Ladbrokes or Victor Chandler. I took a long hard look at former Guineas favourite Rainbow View, but the poor form of her stable allied with concerns about the ground mean she is passed over.
A little earlier in the day I’ll be on William Haggas’s South Easter in the King Edward VII Stakes at 3.05 pm – a cough denied him a run in the Derby following his win in the Dee Stakes, but that could work in his favour now as he approaches this target a fresh horse.
He steps up to a mile and a half tomorrow and looks a knocking each way bet at a quarter of the odds 11/2 with several of the firms, including Bet365 and Stan James. This son of Galileo has a great appetite for a battle and benefits from the assistance of regular pilot Neil Callan.
Aidan O’Brien’s Black Bear Island looks sure to go off favourite despite a disappointing showing in the Derby when he didn’t seem to handle the undulations of Epsom - but what puts me off is stablemate Freemantle’s failure to win a listed race on Thursday when Black Bear Island tackles Group 2 company here – there was very little between them when Black Bear Island won the Dante.
Later on have a pot at 7/2 favourite Dhushan in the Queen’s Vase at 4.55pm – Michael Jarvis’s charge looks by far the likeliest of any of these to handle the step up to two miles, and the confidence of connections is encouraging.
Good luck!
