The wide open expanse of County Kildare’s famous Curragh racecourse could be humming to a slightly surreal tune this weekend as Manton handler Brian Meehan launches a potent dual attack on the boylesports.com 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas.
While the Irish may be threatening a whitewash in our Derby on June 6th – the graphic on the front page of today’s Racing Post displays the fact they’re responsible for the first six in the betting and nine of the first eleven, while William Hill have slammed the door shut on their market about an Irish-trained winner of the Epsom Classic – Wiltshire based Meehan could be about to exact a bit of Anglophile revenge by walking away with both of their Guineas.
Forget the fact Limerick-born Meehan is as Irish as the Liffey and focus on the great chance awaiting Delegator in the boylesports.com Irish 2,000 Guineas at 3.45pm on Saturday.
Meehan, famous for the exploits of David Junior in the Dubai Duty Free and the Coral Eclipse, as well as Red Rocks winning both the Breeders’ Cup Turf and the Man O’War Stakes (when he beat Curlin), produced Delegator to run a huge race in our own Guineas, finding only Sea The Stars too good on ground that would have been quicker than ideal.
His pedigree suggests we can expect a distinct improvment on this rain-softened ground, and he can go one better in this weaker looking Irish equivalent. Snaffle the 9/4 with bet365.
A little under 24 hours later the fillies take centre stage in the boylesports.com Irish 1,000 Guineas (3.40pm Sunday) and the one I’m keen on in a cracking looking race is Meehan’s maiden Super Sleuth.
She may not have got her head in front yet, but her effort in finishing third in the Newmarket version on May 3rd behind Ghanaati and Cuis Ghaire (who re-opposes but isn’t certain to thrive on the ground) was hugely promising, and having improved for that experience she can take this after being supplemented for the race by her sporting connections.

Before that she ran a belter in the Fred Darling at Newbury, and if you stop to consider that she was still plum last less than half a mile from home at Newmarket but flew at them in the closing stages, and clearly imoproving with experience she can prosper here with conditions ideal. Take some 5/1 with Ladbrokes.
Lest we forget bank holiday weekend doesn’t just mean overweight shellsuit clad ASBO parents blocking up shopping centres the length and the breadth of the nation, it also means top class racing on both sides of the Irish sea, most notably at Haydock Park where on Saturday the locals will be flooding into the Newton-le-Willows track in search of a winner as well as a genuine sun tan.
The race of the day is the betfred.com Temple Stakes at 3.10pm, and I’m sticking loyal to Alan Berry’s speedball Look Busy, especially now she drops back in trip to 5f in this 12 runner contest.
Palace House winner Amour Propre will be plenty of pundits’ tip after his win in the Group 3 Newmarket contest (race conditions also mean he escapes a penalty for that win), but the ground is a concern to trainer Henry Candy and it wouldn’t be a major surprise if the antepost favourite doesn’t line up.
Equiano was left out by Barry Hills at the 48 hour stage, leaving Tax Free and Borderlescott alongside Amour Propre at the head of the market.
At the prices though I can’t resist a few quid each way on the immensely likeable Alan Berry’s flagbearer – she looked in good nick at Bath when winning on her reappearance, and then ran a very solid race over 6f when third to Lesson In Humility in the Kilvington at Nottingham.
Lesson In Humility is declared in the Cecil Frail on the same card at 2.35pm, so cheer her on if you’re backing Look Busy, who is a cracking value bet at 16/1 each way with William Hill.
Good luck!
