After a big week in Newmarket the show rolls on to York, Chester and Ascot today, with the Berkshire track hosting one of the key races of the summer in the form of the totesport.com Summer Mile Stakes (2.50pm Live on C4).
Newmarket trainer Chris Wall is frequently associated with his classy six year old Premio Loco, and with good reason – this remarkably consistent type has won 10 of his 19 starts and can further improve that remarkable record this afternoon.
Considered an all weather specialist just a couple of years ago Premio Loco has advanced rapidly since then, making headlines with a campaign in Dubai and a pair of Group 2 wins in Germany.
He faces stiff opposition this afternoon, not least from Ouqba, Dream Eater and French challenger Vertigineux, but after taking the Criterion Stakes on the July course a couple of weeks ago as a rank outsider, he can continue his progress this afternoon stepping back up to a mile and confirm his Newmarket win was no fluke by taking this.
Back him at 7/2 with Sportingbet.
Up at York in the John Smith’s Cup (3.05pm) I’m on an unexposed type in Emirates Champion in the big handicap.
This son of Guineas winner Haafhd is in the habit of winning, netting three of his five starts to date, although nothing comparable to this assignment.
That said he made big progress in two starts in Dubai earlier this year, and will have a squeak at big odds this afternoon.
A dabble each way at 25/1 with Bet365 or William Hill can do no harm.
Good luck!
Saturday’s best bets:
2.50 Ascot – totesport.com Summer Mile Stakes – 9 Premio Loco (win) @ 7/2 (Sportingbet)
3.05 York – 51st John Smith’s Cup (Handicap) – 6 Emirates Champion (each way) @ 25/1 (Bet365 or William Hill)
