Money for Misheer in Doncaster opener – Friday’s tips‏

Oasis Dream filly Misheer looks like the one to be with in this afternoon’s opener at Doncaster, the Group 2 Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes at 1.35pm.

Wily veteran trainer Clive Brittain drops her back in trip to the minimum distance here after her win over 6f in the Cherry Hinton, a switch which won’t hinder her an ounce according to the man who knows her best.

Previous wins at Yarmouth and York over 5f also point the way, and her only career defeat came when second at Royal Ascot after suffering an interrupted preparation.

She can take this as a stepping stone towards a tilt at the Cheveley Park Stakes – solidly backed overnight on the exchanges the 6/4 with Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power and Sportingbet looks about spot on.

Class can tell on day 2 of York’s Ebor Meeting‏

What with Sea The Stars momentary hesitation in remembering his lines in the Juddmonte, the well supported Elusive Pimpernel coming from another county to snatch the Acomb to see his Guineas price halved to 16’s, Monitor Closely’s gutsy effort as the outsider of the lot in the Great Voltigeur, plus Yurituni landing a gamble for Harry Findlay it’s fair to say day one of York Ebor Festival had a bit of something for everyone.

Day two doesn’t look like one you’d refuse a drink with either, and handicap analysts will be rubbing their hands at the sight of the opener, a 15 runner affair featuring some in form types from leading stables (1.45pm).

The one to be with is Sir Michael Stoute’s three year old Class Is Class, who gets in with a very handy 8st 12lb courtesy of the three year old allowance, and benefits from the assistance of Ryan Moore.

He looked pretty smart winning at Yarmouth in May, and then emerged to run a cracker in a competitive handicap at the July Meeting behind Firebet, who in turn progressed to give Harbinger a race in a Group 3 at Goodwood.

Tuesday’s York Ebor Meeting tips‏

A greatly anticipated four days racing on the Knavesmire is finally upon us, and the opening card is a cracker.

At 2.15pm the two year olds line up in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes, and the one to be with is John Dunlop’s well named Elusive Pimpernel.

A decent winner on his debut in a Newmarket maiden he’s got untold scope for improvement, and eye-catchingly has impressed his shrewd trainer sufficiently to warrant entries in the Group 1 Dewhurst and Racing Post Trophy.

The Knavesmire demands speed and stamina and this powerfully built Elusive Quality colt looks made for the venue, given how strongly he ran on near the finish to seize his Newmarket victory.

He had the short priced favourite for tomorrow’s race Poet’s Voice back in third on that occasion, and although Frankie Dettori has chosen him above talented stablemate Vale Of York for Tuesday’s race, Elusive Pimpernel appeals as the one to be with.

Ascot, Newmarket & York – this weekend’s Racing tips‏

Having made the annual pilgrimage to Blackpool on Tuesday night for the Stan James World Matchplay Darts at the Winter Gardens, an event marred by sickening sightings of all the usual shameless suspects attempting to drown themselves on the contents of the free bar in the players’ lounge, it’s a rather smarter affair in prospect this weekend with Ascot hosting a fantastic card on King George day.

Out go the shorts and flip flops (it just wouldn’t do to attend the arrers overdressed) and in come some the rather more stylish threads associated with any trip to the Berkshire venue. They might moan about the new stand and the course layout, but it takes some beating when there’s a decent sized crowd in there.

The punters might be a shade less raucous than on the Fylde coast, but they may well be tempted to do the conga up and down the members’ lawn if Sir Michael Stoute’s Desert Creek can resume the form that saw him rack up consecutive wins at Yarmouth, Windsor and Haydock by taking the Emirates NBD Cup over a mile at 3.15pm.

Riggins the Selection in Saturday’s feature Race

I was due to be presenting from the betting ring at York this afternoon but unfortunately I am feeling a bit under the weather so it will be a case of sitting in front of the TV to catch Saturday’s racing and hopefully cheer the following three selections past the winning post at Ascot and York.

The first selection is an each way bet on Sioux Rising in the 1:50 Ascot at 7/1 with Victor Chandler.

In the 2:50 at Ascot, we are looking to follow up another win on Inboghi who was successful for us last time out and the Mike de Kock runner can be backed at a best price of 4/1 with Totesport.

Finally, in the feature race of the day, the 3:10 at York, John Smiths Cup, look no further than a win bet on Riggins at 11/2, again with Totesport.

Good Luck and hopefullly normal service will be resumed next week!

York and French Oaks the Pick of this weekend’s Racing Tips

With Tom away this week, he has left his weekend column in the trusty hands of Betting Directory tipsters and whilst Mr Lee has been soaking up the sun, we have had our heads in the form book in an attempt to point our loyal readers in the direction of a few winners and continue Tom’s impressive strike rate with a third  winning Saturday on the bounce.

The pick of this weekend’s action comes from York and Sandown, where the Channel 4 cameras will be covering seven races from across both meetings. With Royal Ascot just days away, it certainly isn’t a vintage weekend of Racing action but there are still a couple of good opportunities to get amongst the winners.

Our first tip of the week came on Wednesday in the form of an antepost selection ahead of Royal Ascot which kicks off on Tuesday next week. We have advised that you snap up a bit of the 3/1 about Yeats to win the Ascot Gold Cup on Thrusday. The only bookmaker still offering the 3/1 about the Aidan O’Brien runner, who is bidding for a record fourth successive win in the race is Ladbrokes, and we aren’t expecting the ‘Magic Sign’ to hold that price for too much longer.

This weekend’s best bets from Goodwood and York

A perfect forecast and six meetings across the country mean it’s time to slap on the Hawaiian Tropic and get fired into the best of this weekend’s racing action, and with the Channel 4 Racing cameras stationed at Goodwood, Haydock and York for an 8-race bonanza, there’s punting opportunities a plenty.

Here at picturesque Goodwood it isn’t quite as hot as the 30 degrees we enjoyed in Rome in midweek, but I don’t mind sacrificing a few degrees when there isn’t a knife wielding Italian attempting to stab you in the backside lurking around every corner and behind every building, although the ageing parking attendant wielding a megaphone in the press car park does look pretty menacing in his fluorescent vest.

On a more serious note, the Sussex track should be applauded for their various initiatives in trying to get more people to come racing – it’s a debate inspired by the much discussed ’Ben or Brian’ saga, and one we’ve been chewing over on the Morning Line the last coupe of weeks – and having got more than 9,000 to their new bank holiday fixture last Monday (many of them first time children) Goodwood are doing at least as well as anyone.

Free Bets From Leading Bookmakers to be claimed on all this weekend’s Racing

Newbury & Newmarket – Weekend Horse Racing Tips!

It’s fair to say the new drainage system is getting a fair workout here at York with the rain bucketing down since 8am, but one of the most talked about horses of the day Warringah can have punters singing in the rain on the Knavesmire by landing the sportingbet.com Jorvik Stakes Handicap at 2.10pm (Friday).

This fella is the subject of great debate on his seasonal debut with the rain falling and a couple of disappointing efforts last term to put behind him, but this four year old son of Galileo is ready to make up for lost time after being gelded after finishing nearly last in the St Leger back in September.

Working like a serious horse, connections believe he could well turn out to be a fair bit better than just a handicapper (an entry in the Irish St Leger suggests exactly that), and with the rain softened going (changed to Good to Soft at the time of writing) unlikely to stop him since he won on exactly that description at Newbury last June, the 9/2 generally available looks a fair price. For added insurance take a guaranteed price with either Paddy Power or Boylesports.

York’s back! Wednesday’s tips‏

It’s 10 months since I’ve paid a visit to the picturesque Knavesmire, rain stopping play at the Ebor before a major revamp of the drainage system lead to a prolonged closure during the late summer and Autumn racing months.

Now though York’s back, and with the sun beating down and the course looking in pristine condition it’s all systems go.

The pick of the days racing is the Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at 2.40pm, in which four of the six runners are still engaged in the Oaks, and the one I’m really looking forward to seeing strut her stufff is Michael Bell’s filly Sariska - a maiden winner at Newmarket back in November she met every bit of trouble going in her Guineas trial at Newbury, finishing a creditable fourth given the circumstances over seven furlongs in the Fred Darling.

Bred to stay much further I had her down as an unlucky loser that day given that she was a bit of a madame going down to the start, then missed the break, and then capped it off by meeting every bit of traffic going during the race. Perhaps not in receipt of the finest ride, she should see plenty of daylight in this small field and can atone.

Bell opted to swerve the Guineas after Newbury, choosing a step up in trip and hopefully a tilt at the Oaks (for which she is 10/1 general).

The fast-ish going is my one area of concern, but that also applies to High Heeled, and the one I really fear is the Queen’s horse Enticement – her own Newmarket win in November has worked out particuarly well.

All things considered though I think we could see fireworks from Sariska now she steps up in trip, her trainer holds her in the highest regard, and the 11/4 (guaranteed) with Boylesports looks worth a dabble.

Later in the afternoon the Blue Square EBF Novice Stakes sees five go to post, and I can pass on a good word for Mick Quinlan’s Starburst Excel, the only filly in the race, and the subject of positive reports from the Newmarket moles.

She was fourth of eleven on her racecourse debut at Newmarket in April, and in receipt of a handy 5lb fillies’ allowance here she can gain her first career success at 7/2 with Bet365.

Wednesday’s York tips:

2.40 5 Sariska (win) @ 11/4 (Boylesports)

4.20 6 Starburst Excel (win) @ 7/2 (Bet365)

Something for the weekend…

Fresh as a Parisian tramp’s socks after a blinding couple of days in the French capital, thoughts turn to the end of one season and the start of another, and a host of opportunities to cash in this weekend.

But first a couple of talking points from the weekend just gone: how wrong were we to doubt Zarkava? A genuine superstar who quite rightly raised the roof at Longchamp. Facing the older horses, a temperamental madamoiselle, up against the colts, more traffic problems than Garstang in rush hour? No sweat. She deserved every ounce of our appreciation.

Is Grand Criterium winner Naqoos really a Guineas contender? To me, even the 14/1 on offer with Paddy Power, Totesport and William Hill looks worse value than the €10 a pint Kronenbourg on offer in every Paris boozer. He did seriously well to claim a rare front-running win on a hold-up specialists weekend, but I don’t see this fella getting the trip on the peripherique, let alone the Rowley Mile.

Finally, why do all French bar staff insist on serving you ¾ of a pint of lager topped off with two inches of froth. I want a pint, not a cappuccino. Come back the Lion & Railway, all is forgiven.

Looking forward to this weekend and one future Classic contender who does merit serious consideration is Michael Jarvis’s Kite Wood, who can continue where he left off when justifying weighty market support at Doncaster four weeks ago, by taking Ascot’s Group 3 Deloitte Autumn Stakes. Derby entry Kite Wood, a son of Galileo and available at best odds of 25/1 with VCBet for Epsom ’09, did me plenty of favours when knuckling down to get the better of a decent field at Town Moor, and he certainly appreciated the step up to a mile after a promising debut in a Leicester maiden over 7f. This is another significant step for Jarvis’s charge, but the word is he can get his name on the scoresheet before hanging up his boots for the winter.

Elsewhere on the Flat, there’s a belting looking card north of the border at Musselburgh, transferred from York whilst the drains which will prevent another Ebor washout are installed on the Knavesmire. The undoubted highlight of which is the National Express York Sprint Cup, run over the minimum distance, and likely to favour those experienced horses who don’t mind the rough and tumble of the big field handicaps.

Step forward Siren’s Gift, third in the Portland in first time blinkers, a race she would have had sewn up had it been run over 5f, second in Newmarket’s Rous Stakes, and now gunning for a victory which would cap a fine campaign. Champion apprentice-elect David Probert is cracking value for his 5lb claim, and with the blinds milking further improvement she can go one better in the Musselburgh feature; definitely some each way value to be had.

Meanwhile over the sticks this weekend’s Chepstow fixture is always one I look forward to, not least as it signals a long overdue return of stacks of quality jump racing. Bring it on.

The big battalions are making their first tender steps towards some gaff in Gloucestershire, and there’s early season value to be snapped up. Not least in the Call House @ williamhillbingo.com Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle where Tuanku can overcome a penalty picked up for a fluent winning debut at Plumpton three weeks ago. Fit from the Flat his aptitude for the hurdling game was there for all to see at the Sussex track, and Chepstow’s galloping circuit will be right up his street.

Over the larger obstacles, Tolworth Hurdle winner Breedsbreeze makes his chasing debut in Bangor’s Anderson & Co. Solicitors Bright Future Novices’ Chase, and the vibes from Ditcheat suggest he could be a star over fences. Paul Nicholls has chosen to start him off over 2m 4½f, and unsurprisingly he’s currently on offer at just 20/1 with Paddypower.com for the Arkle Chase as well as 25/1 for the Royal & SunAlliance, both at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival. A winning debut beckons.

This weekend’s best bets:

3.15 Musselburgh back 8 Siren’s Gift (ew)

3.30 back 4 Kite Wood

3.40 Chepstow back 1 Tuanku

4.00 Bangor back 3 Breedsbreeze
