Pepe to take Rivals’ measure in Imperial Shootout

Not since Collier Bay beat a small field in 1995 has the traditional pre-Cheltenham handicap teaser of the Imperial Cup been without a representative from the Nicholashayne base of the Pipe team, but with Hunterview unable to creep in at the bottom of the weights and Salut Flo shopping elsewhere, that’s exactly what we’ve got for the 2010 renewal, live on Channel 4 at 3.05pm on Saturday afternoon.

Bookmakers are keenest on improving Qaspal for Philip Hobbs and AP McCoy; the six year old needs to win here to get a penalty which would carry him ironically into next week’s Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle and a tilt at the £75,000 bonus.

This lightly raced type has got it together the last twice, winning at Kempton (when he wasn’t overly fluent at his hurdles) and then hacking up over further at Sandown.

Dropping back in trip in a vastly more competitive contest here this will be by far the biggest field Qaspal has encountered, and what’s more the handicapper has had his say, slapping him with a stone rise to a mark of 124.

On those grounds I’m happy to pass him over, but I won’t be looking too far down the list, with only two of the last eight winners of this race boasting a double figure SP.

The one that catches my eye is Paul Nicholl’s high achiever Pepe Simo, a classy type who did so well pre-Christmas he earned a pop at the Christmas Hurdle.

Earlier in the campaign easy wins at Wincanton (twice) and Haydock helped earn him a mark of 140, which means he races with 11st 5lb on his back here.

Ruby Walsh is again on board, preferring him to Nicholls’ other runner Pistolet Noir.

The winner of a bumper at Taunton during his debut campaign he was considered good enough for a shot at the Champion Bumper 12 months ago (finishing 9th behind Dunguib), and the upgrade to hurdling has been a largely positive one, with three wins culminating in his best display at Haydock where he had a real cut at his hurdles and really looked to have got the hang of the job, putting several lengths daylight between himself and the chasing pack.

He wasn’t good enough to trouble Go Native and co in the Christmas Hurdle, but he might be next year and this is far easier.

Given that my selection is by Victory Note out of Vallee Doree heaven only knows where they got the name Pepe Simo from, although possibly it was influenced by that immaculately dressed buffoon Lord Culcheth, who has been known to return from Matalan with the odd pair of orange Pepe jeans in his bin bag.

An entry in the County Hurdle means Nicholls also has the option of fishing for the £75,000 bonus if he can win here and at the Festival, but no doubt he’ll be more than satisfied if they can claim Sandown’s big pre-Cheltenham prize.

As with any big field handicap there are a stack of alternative options, but Pepe Simo looks to have excellent claims.

Good luck!

Saturday’s Sandown Park tip:

3.05 – Paddy Power Imperial Cup – 4 Pepe Simo (each way) @ 7/1 (Skybet, Totesport, Victor Chandler)

n.b. at lesser odds both Bet365 & Paddy Power are betting 1/4 odds 1-2-3-4-5 on the race

All’s Well for the Tingle Creek – Saturday’s Sandown Tips

The sight of the cream of the speed chasing divsion flying over the railway fences and banking right before the stiff uphill finish in front of the packed Sandown Park grandstands means it can only be Tingle Creek day, one of the elite days of the entire season, and a serious thrill for National Hunt devotees the length and the breadth of the nation.

The fact Father Christmas is in reception as you reach the track suspiciously wearing a pair of Nike Air Max and dishing out free mince pies keeps the theme going, and with a small but select field of five heading to post for the feature race at 2.25pm there’s a lot to look forward to, even if you cannot stand those revolting pies.

Claim a free bet from one of the leading Bookmakers on this Weekend’s Racing

It’s a fantastic race, especially since only one of those five can be written off with any confidence, although I’ll definitely be taking on antepost favourite Big Zeb who heads the Irish challenge in the hands of Barry Geraghty.

Saturday’s Variety Club Day tips for Sandown Park‏

The crowds will be out in force at Sandown tomorrow as the celebs roll up to support Variety Club Day and try and bag a couple of winners in the process.

A tough week on the punting front for yours truly at York would be made a whole lot more palatable with a decent winning Saturday to round it off, and I’ll be putting my faith in Sir Michael Stoute’s Lang Shining (each way) to make an impression in a tricky looking 17 runner 1m 2f handicap at 3.15pm.

He’s a bit of a monkey this old horse, but I backed him off the same mark 12 months ago when he finished second in this very race at 12/1, and with the assessor dropping him a pound back to 98 on a course he enjoys, he looks worthy of a few quid with gallops reports suggesting he’s back to his best.

Unlucky last time out at Glorious Goodwood, he ran really well when fourth the time before that at York, and with a good draw here in stall 15 and Ryan Moore to do the steering, if he chooses to put it in then I reckon the 8/1 currently chalked up with Stan James could be made to look very generous. Back him each way.

Sandown & Haydock – Eclipse Day Tips – Look for the value in Mirrored‏

Sweltering conditons and the 48 hour declaration of Guineas and Derby hero Sea The Stars means they’ll be packing into Sandown Park on Saturday afternoon for what looks set to be a top notch card at the Esher venue.

Sandown has to be one of my favourite tracks be it on the Flat or over the sticks – you can pretty much guarantee a decent crowd for the better days, the racing tends to be well above average, the facilities are in good nick and the viewing is excellent. That said they do have very excitable car park attendants, but you can’t have it all…..

Check out the latest Betting Offers from leading bookmakers for all this weekend’s Racing Action

Coral sponsor their big day on the level and have cleverly come up with some catchy new race titles for the afternoon’s action; of particular interest is the Coral Challenge Handicap over a mile at 2.40pm.

Hourigan hotpot not without a prayer in Sandown showpiece‏

They say time flies and remarkably it’s four years since my RTE colleague Ted Walsh sent a lightly weighted ten year old in the shape of Jack High across the Irish sea to win the then Betfred Gold Cup, and tomorrow I fancy another Irish challenger to scoop the final major prize of the British National Hunt season.

The race which will be referred to forever and a day as the Whitbread in now sponsored by Stoke-on-Trent outfit bet365, and I reckon the latest name to be engraved on their Gold Cup will be that of another nicely weighted Irish-trained ten year old: Church Island.

The selection has been in good nick this year winning a competitive veterans’ chase at Doncaster (third that day Briery Fox came out and won at Ascot beating a good horse), before a decent second at Newbury behind tomorrow’s top weight Darkness.

A no-show at Ascot preceeded a tilt at the Irish National less than a fortnight ago, and you couldn’t fail to be impressed with the way he saw out the marathon 3m 5f trip, finding only Niche Market too strong after racing prominently for the majority of the race. If he can re-produce a similar display then he’s entitled to be bang in the mix in what doesn’t look the strongest renewal.

Youngster Luke McNiff was in the plate that day, and he deservedly got his share of praise for getting the horse into a nice rhythm over his fences – clumsy, error strewn jumping had been his undoing at Ascot, and with Denis O’Regan now taking over steering duties he has a cracking chance providing O’Regan can eliminate the one danger area and get him popping away over the Railway fences.

However, what really appeared to eke out a big improvement at Fairyhouse was the application of first time blinkers, and it’s no surprise to see wily County Limerick trainer Michael Hourigan re-apply the head gear for this test.

Hourigan, best known for his exploits with multiple Irish Grade 1 winner Beef Or Salmon, is more than capable of getting one ready for a big occasion.

What’s more, the defection of Roll Along means the weights have taken an inevitable rise, leaving Church Island on an acceptable looking 10st 11lb.

Admittedly, Sandown will be a new test to this experienced horse, but as the winner of seven of his 38 races he’s found no problems on testing tracks such as Punchestown, Sandown and Galway, so let’s hope Sandown can also be taken in his stride.

A few showers are forecast for tonight so the likely good ground will be perfect. Back Church Island each way at 12/1 with Paddy Power (despite the frustrating declaration of 15 horses for each way punters).

Of the opposition, Lacdoudal, Oodachee and Kilbeggan Blade all have realistic claims, but the one I really fear is Paul Nicholl’s Hoo La Baloo - the eight year old thrives around Sandown, and having finished third in this 12 months ago now benefits from a 9lb lower mark.

Nicholls has had this race in mind for ages, so I’ll be investing in a win only saver just in case Church Island’s jumping goes to pot.

Later in the day at Haydock I can also pass on a very strong message from camp Noseda for the ultra quick Rublevka Star - this improving filly can leave them chasing shadows and get one on the board for favourite backers at the Lancashire track. Don’t miss out!

Good luck!

Saturday’s bet365 Gold tip (3.10pm Sandown Park):

9 Church Island (each way) @ 12/1 (Paddy Power)

2 Hoo La Baloo (win) @ 11/2 (general)

6.10 Haydock Park:

9 Rublevka Star (win)

Pipe’s Magnificent Seven the weekend tip as he eyes Cheltenham bonus‏

Sandown’s the place to be on Saturday afternoon when one of my favourite races on the entire calendar forms the main attraction on a decent card, and it could be more of the same from star West Country trainer David Pipe.

The winner of the Imperial Cup (now sponsored by Paddy Power) earns a whopping £75,000 bonus from the sponsors if they go on to win any race at the Cheltenham Festival, a feat pulled off by Pipe Junior two years ago when Gaspara won at Sandown and then netted the Fred Winter.

He nearly did the trick again 12 months ago too with the brilliant Ashkazar foiled only by a very good horse in Crack Away Jack as he too made an assault on the Fred Winter. (n.b. don’t be afraid to back Ashkazar at 22/1 each way for next week’s Champion Hurdle, it’s a massive price)

The Pipe family have won the Imperial Cup an eye-watering eight times in the last 20 years, and on three occasions they’ve managed to net the bonus (Olympian 93 & Blowing Wind in 98 are the others), so there’s every reason to believe he’ll be up to his old tricks again.

This year he fields two, with hot favourite Mr Thriller currently an 11/4 shot with every firm in the village after facile wins at Bangor and Fontwell.

The form of those wins has been well advertised, but as a result he races off a mark of 145 carrying 11st 6lb.

More alarmingly he has only run on testing ground thus far, and with no rain around over the next couple of days and Sandown only currently Good to Soft, Good in places, this’ll be by far the quickest ground he has encountered.

At the 5/1 available when they priced the race up at the start of the week I’d have happily taken the risk, but since there’s another Pipe runner available at more than three times the price, I’ll happily take a watching brief with Mr Thriller if we can make the frame at a decent each way price.

Therefore the horse carrying my cash at 9/1 each way with Coral will be bottom weight Seven Is My Number – he’ll have no issues with the ground and badly needs a penalty to get into the weights for his various possible Festival assignments next week.

Not seen for a year since he overcame Paul Nicholl’s Woolcombe Folly (Woolcombe Folly went on to win five times thereafter) over hurdles at Taunton in February ‘08, he has won after a long absence before and could be very well handicapped.

Lightly raced, he has the assistance of the excellent Timmy Murphy to do the steering, and could get loose with a mere 10st 3lb on his back.

With the Festival looming he could be a handy source of funds for the battle ahead!

Good luck!

Saturday tip:
Seven Is My Number (each way) @ 9/1 (Coral)

Three Good Tips For Saturday’s Sandown Card

I’ll be down at Sandown on Saturday where Optimus Maximus looks highly likely to get favourite backers off to a flying start in the Toteplacepot Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at 1.30pm.

Bred to be a star over hurdles (he’s a half-brother to a couple of horses you’ll remember: Paul Nicholls’ very useful Albuhera, plus Irish and French Guineas winner Bachir) Nicky Henderson’s charge cost an eye-watering €825,000 when snapped up by current connections, and duly obliged at the first time of asking when readily drawing away from a good field in an above-average contest at Newbury a fortnight ago.

There’s still a bit of work to do to redeem his price tag, but Newbury was a start, and at current exchange rates there’s only about another €822,000 to go.

Tomorrow’s price won’t be anything to write home about, but he’s definite banker material for multiples fans, since soft ground holds no fears and he hurdled like a natural at Newbury.

No bigger than 33/1 for the Triumph Hurdle he can enhance his reputation with a cosy success here.

The second race on the card should also go the way of favourite backers with 2008 Triumph Hurdle winner Celestial Halo set to advertise his Champion Hurdle claims in the Totepool Contenders Hurdle at 2.05pm.

He made a very pleasing return at Ascot last time in the re-arranged Boylesports International, running into the roadblock which is Binocular, but nonetheless performing with distinction in having to make the running, and then finishing well clear of Chomba Womba, Katchit and Crack Away Jack.

Saturday’s opposition is nothing like as formidable, with Osana likely to need the run, and Afsoun just short of the class necessary to compete at the very highest level.

They race for a tasty first prize of £31,310 in the Totesport.com Masters Handicap Chase at 3.45pm, and I’ll be having a couple of quid on a young horse on the upgrade in the shape of Jonjo O’Neill’s Can’t Buy Time, who’s definitely one to keep on the right side of.

Creeping up the weights after wins at Southwell, Huntingdon and Ascot, he posted a sound effort in finishing a close third in the Haydock’s Tommy Whittle Chase just before Christmas, and getting in with a handy 10st and the very capable Richie McLernon’s claim a further boost, he’ll be a danger to all on ground he’ll love.

The one to fear could be Nicky Richards’ According To John, off the track for 14 months, but third to Denman in the 2007 SunAlliance. According to connections he’ll need the run but with high-class form in the book he could be one to watch.

Lastly I had to laugh at the tv coverage of Wigan v Liverpool on Wednesday night, and it’s hats off to whoever chooses the music at the JJB Stadium……new signing Mido slots in the penalty to make it 1-1, cue a bit of music to mark the occasion, what do they play? Walk like an Egyptian. Brilliant! Whoever is responsible deserves a pay-rise. Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan is sure to be reading this so take note. The sight of thousands of pie-eating Wiganers doing the accompanying dance moves is a sight to behold.

Good luck!
Tom

Dee Ee to take the Tolworth

Sandown’s Saturday card looks set to beat the frost on their first big day of 2009, and the best bet of the meeting look to be Nick Gifford’s Dee Ee Williams who can return to winning ways in the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle (2.40pm).

Short headed by Medermit in a hot contest at Ascot six days before Christmas Dee Ee Williams made a big impression with wins at Cheltenham and Ascot earlier in the season, and he can get back on the victory trail at the Esher track. The early quote of 2/1 with bet365 and Paddy Power looks a fair reflection of his chances.

He faces some decent opposition in Clay Hollister who made a pleasing reappearance when winning a weak Sandown race after a lengthy layoff on Tingle Creek day, but this is a massive step up in class and I’ll be surprised if he has enough guns to win this.

Be sure to tune in to the Morning Line to hear the views of his trainer Nicky Henderson, our studio guest.

The early favourite for the race with the firms is Paul Nicholls’ Mahonia, but he folded pretty tamely at Cheltenham last time in a race won by Karabak, and it’ll be fascinating to see how they ride him tomorrow, as Ruby Walsh reckons he’s all-speed whereas Nicholls believes he’s an out and out stayer. Either way, they’ll have their work cut out to reel in Dee Ee Williams.

Tip – Saturday 3rd January
Dee Ee Williams to win the 2:40 at Sandown

Different day, same outcome for the Weekend Nap!

A frosty night in Newcastle put paid to our plans to clean up at Newcastle last Saturday, but Punjabi still holds the whip hand in the re-arranged WBX.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Wetherby this Saturday (1.50pm).

Only six now go to post, and with two-time Fighting Fifth winner Harchibald now confined to barracks back in Ireland, this should be a straight-forward task for Nicky Henderson’s classy five-year-old. Both favourites and five-year-olds have a cracking record in the race, and that looks set to improve further still. He’s versatile enough to cope with this sharper track, and should have more than enough up his sleeve to see off Sublimity, who he had in rear at both Cheltenham and Punchestown back in the spring.

If the ground were to dry up then Blue Bajan, a creditable third to the heavily gambled Sentry Duty at Ascot, could be the one for the forecast.

On the back of recent hype regarding a few missed opportunities, it was intriguing to see Paul Nicholls fail to send out a single runner from Sunday to Tuesday this week, and then only one at Plumpton on Wednesday, but he was back in the winners’ enclosure at Wincanton on Thursday, and could have something to smile about when Free World takes his chance in Sandown’s Betinternet.com Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at 2.00pm on Saturday.

The four-year-old has only had three starts in this country, but he bolted up over course and distance at the first time of asking over fences, beating some reasonable opposition by eight lengths and upwards on November Handicap day.

Champion jockey AP McCoy did the steering that day, and you ‘ll have to have been stuck in a very large snow drift all week to fail to know he’s back on board in the aftermath of fevered discussion about Sam Thomas’s current tribulations.

Suffice to say AP got a real tune out of Free World that day; Sandown is a serious test first time out over fences, but the fact all the 33/1 for the Arkle was hoovered up pre-race suggested big things were expected, and he duly delivered. I’m not about to suggest an antepost bet in a race where his trainer is spoilt for choice, but this looks a winnable-looking target as he continues his chasing education.

On the subject of the much-maligned Sam Thomas I might as well throw my hat into the ring and point out what a fantastic jockey he is, and a couple of disappointing results aren’t about to alter that opinion.

A seriously nice guy to boot, he’s a massive talent & will be back in the winners before you know it. Our build ‘em up and knock ‘em down media culture has hung him out to dry in recent days, but why on earth are people so desperate to see him fail? On the back of taking the first two races on the card at Wincanton on Thursday watch him boot home a few winners at Chepstow this weekend, and have a word with yourself if you’re still complaining about him.

What he really needs is a high profile Grade 1 winner to get his name back up in lights, and he can get exactly that as Noland returns to Ireland to line up in Punchestown’s John Durkan Memorial Chase over 2m 4f on Sunday at 2.05pm.

It’s a fascinating race involving none other that 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner War Of Attrition, who’s brought a massive smile to the face of all true jumping fans by winning both of his comeback runs to tentatively re-enter the ‘09 Gold Cup equation, but he could be about to hit a barrier in the shape of the fleet-footed Noland.

I fancy Sam will have too many guns for War Of Attrition over this trip, and Noland can do him for toe to record another win across the Irish sea after he hacked up at Down Royal on November 1st.

Coral are being more than generous with their 11/4 offering about Noland, since Irish firm Paddy Power go only 2/1 and others go as short as 11/8 . Take advantage before it’s gone.

Last up, there’ll be a monster crowd at Sandown on Saturday to see the Tingle Creek Chase, a race I’ve loved watching down the years, the speed chasers thundering over the railway fences and up the hill – brilliant.

Master Minded looked one in a million at Cheltenham in March, and he’s tough to oppose despite the way he folded at Aintree the following month. That said, at the prices I can’t resist having a few quid on Tidal Bay at 100/30 – a stand out price with Ladbrokes.

Never out of the first two in 15 runs, his chasing stats are phenomenal, with six wins from seven appearances, and a runaway Arkle success in his locker. I was at Catterick on Wednesday & watched him have a nice prep on the track after racing, he popped over a couple of fences with Denis O’Regan in the plate and looks in great nick, and if there is to be a miniature upset, he’s the one alright.

Good luck!

Jump To It For A Profitable Weekend

While I’ll be enjoying the end of season party atmosphere on Town Moor – some 200 miles south west a key fixture in the National Hunt calendar will be cranking up at Wincanton.

I love a good day out at the Somerset venue, a proper old-fashioned galloping track with big stiff fences and a clued-up crowd who know their racing. That and the sight of numerous pairs of red and custard cords being proudly sported by the local fashionistas.

Just five go to post for a valuable pot at 2.50pm for the Totetentofollow Elite Hurdle, and I’m keen to take on the Champion Hurdler Katchit, who has a stiff task trying to concede a stone and more to some useful rivals.

Perhaps the ground was a little quicker than he’d have preferred when beaten by Snap Tie at Kempton last time, and he’s sure to improve for his first outing of the new season, but he’ll have to be right at the top of his game to get the better of some of these, including Paul Nicholls’ promising French recruit Takeroc, who finished second to Border Castle in Ayr’s Scottish Champion Hurdle when last seen back in April.

Takeroc may be seen to even better effect when allowed to concentrate solely on his chasing career, and I’m going to by-pass him in favour of having a couple of quid one of my favourite horses in training, popular dual-purpose campaigner Blythe Knight.

Nicely weighted, fit from the Flat, he has no problems regarding ground or trip, and trainer John Quinn and jockey Dougie Costello teamed up to win this in 2006 with 9/2 shot Crow Wood. I won’t be going all out, as despite the small field it’s a race to savour, but at around 7/1 with the bookmaker Paddy Power he can spring a minor surprise here, and add to a career tally which already includes big race hurdling success at Aintree, plus on the level a win and a second in the Lincoln, a key listed race at Chester, plus successive victories in Epsom’s Diomed Stakes.

The next race on the card is the Badger Ales Trophy Handicap Chase at 3.25pm, a race in which there are question marks about plenty of the main protagonists.

Once again I’m keen to take on the favourite, which looks likely to be Paul Nicholls’ Leading Attraction; this is only the seven-year-olds fifth racecourse appearance, and he’s going to need all Ruby Walsh’s experience to guide him around these challenging fences if his jumping at Taunton back in April is anything to go by.

With that in mind, I’m happy to look to the bottom of the weights and a young horse with a big future; Tom George’s Island Flyer.

At likely odds of 11/2 with Ladbrokes he’s a progressive type, unbeaten over fences, and a danger to all off his light weight. A former Irish point-to-point winner, he can continue to improve after his summer break, and with Paddy Brennan continuing the partnership he can maintain his winning sequence.

Finally, there’s also a decent card at Sandown, and word reaches me that Alan King’s new boy Bensalem is considered way above average, and can take a hand in the concluding bumper at 4.05pm.

Tom’s Wincanton & Sandown Tips

  • 2:50 Wincanton (Saturday) Blythe Knight to win @ best morning price
  • 3:25 Wincanton (Saturday) Island Flyer to win @ best morning price
  • 4:05 Sandown (Saturday) Bensalem to win @ best morning price
