Pepe to take Rivals’ measure in Imperial Shootout

Not since Collier Bay beat a small field in 1995 has the traditional pre-Cheltenham handicap teaser of the Imperial Cup been without a representative from the Nicholashayne base of the Pipe team, but with Hunterview unable to creep in at the bottom of the weights and Salut Flo shopping elsewhere, that’s exactly what we’ve got for the 2010 renewal, live on Channel 4 at 3.05pm on Saturday afternoon.

Bookmakers are keenest on improving Qaspal for Philip Hobbs and AP McCoy; the six year old needs to win here to get a penalty which would carry him ironically into next week’s Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle and a tilt at the £75,000 bonus.

This lightly raced type has got it together the last twice, winning at Kempton (when he wasn’t overly fluent at his hurdles) and then hacking up over further at Sandown.

Dropping back in trip in a vastly more competitive contest here this will be by far the biggest field Qaspal has encountered, and what’s more the handicapper has had his say, slapping him with a stone rise to a mark of 124.

On those grounds I’m happy to pass him over, but I won’t be looking too far down the list, with only two of the last eight winners of this race boasting a double figure SP.

The one that catches my eye is Paul Nicholl’s high achiever Pepe Simo, a classy type who did so well pre-Christmas he earned a pop at the Christmas Hurdle.

Earlier in the campaign easy wins at Wincanton (twice) and Haydock helped earn him a mark of 140, which means he races with 11st 5lb on his back here.

Ruby Walsh is again on board, preferring him to Nicholls’ other runner Pistolet Noir.

The winner of a bumper at Taunton during his debut campaign he was considered good enough for a shot at the Champion Bumper 12 months ago (finishing 9th behind Dunguib), and the upgrade to hurdling has been a largely positive one, with three wins culminating in his best display at Haydock where he had a real cut at his hurdles and really looked to have got the hang of the job, putting several lengths daylight between himself and the chasing pack.

He wasn’t good enough to trouble Go Native and co in the Christmas Hurdle, but he might be next year and this is far easier.

Given that my selection is by Victory Note out of Vallee Doree heaven only knows where they got the name Pepe Simo from, although possibly it was influenced by that immaculately dressed buffoon Lord Culcheth, who has been known to return from Matalan with the odd pair of orange Pepe jeans in his bin bag.

An entry in the County Hurdle means Nicholls also has the option of fishing for the £75,000 bonus if he can win here and at the Festival, but no doubt he’ll be more than satisfied if they can claim Sandown’s big pre-Cheltenham prize.

As with any big field handicap there are a stack of alternative options, but Pepe Simo looks to have excellent claims.

Good luck!

Saturday’s Sandown Park tip:

3.05 – Paddy Power Imperial Cup – 4 Pepe Simo (each way) @ 7/1 (Skybet, Totesport, Victor Chandler)

n.b. at lesser odds both Bet365 & Paddy Power are betting 1/4 odds 1-2-3-4-5 on the race

What a Weekend in store at Newbury – tips available now

Denman is red hot favourite for the Hennessy but I'm opposing him!

Denman is red hot favourite for the Hennessy but I'm opposing him!

A nigh on perfect weekend of sport lies in wait for armchair punters, with two fantastic days racing at Newbury, Newcastle’s Fighting Fifth, a typically strong Hatton’s Grace card at Fairyhouse, plus a mid-table scouse derby, the pivotal top of the table Arsenal v Chelsea game and the small matter of ‘el derbi superclasico’ over in Spain.

I can just picture my great mate Lord Culcheth parked on the sofa glugging his Liebfraumilch from a pint glass, Betfair fired up on his laptop, the 42 inch stolen plasma screen belting out Sky Sports or some obscure hooky Greek satellite channel, mobile at the ready, smug grin on his face as he snuggles up to some leathery old cougar he met while prowling the coat queue or the burger van at 4am that morning, dreaming of a trip to Andalucia with the profits of his punting.

All points North in the Paddy Power Gold Cup – Saturday’s tips

We’re up and running with a brilliant first day of the Open Meeting in the can at Cheltenham, with Razor Royale bagging the biggie he’s always threatened and Henry de Bromhead’s Loosen The Load staking his claim as a hurdler to follow this season (at over 18 hands he’s going to be some chaser under big weights with a penalty in his novice campaign), followed by banks specialist Garde Champetre stealing the show in the Cross Country race. All that despite the rain.

It’s brilliant being back at Cheltenham with its lively, friendly, knowledgeable crowd, and on Saturday afternoon they can profit from backing Irish raider Northern Alliance in the feature Paddy Power Gold Cup at 2.35pm.

Plenty of positives to recommend this horse with too: in good form this year in all disciplines having being at least placed on the flat, over hurdles and fences in recent times, he took the Guinness Kerry National at the Listowel Festival last time out in the hands of Ruby Walsh, beating a solid yard stick in the shape of veteran Church Island.

Paul Carberry resumes his partnership with the eight year old this time, and this sound jumper who has won three of his seven chase starts can land a major prize here.

Fifty Two weeks of waiting are over and the assault on the senses, which is the Galway races are back!

The opening race at 5:10, a two mile Novice Hurdle, can fall to the ever powerful Willie Mullins & Ruby Walsh combination courtesy of Tarkari, available at a best priced 5/1 with Boylesports.

Bet £20 Get £20 Free when you Open an account at Boylesports this week for Galway & Goodwood

Given the testing conditions (which should suit Tarkari far more than several of today’s rivals), a drop back in trip should be ideal.

Day 4 Cheltenham Tips – All To Play For!

Surprises a plenty on day three of the Festival as Big Buck’s upset the big two in the World Hurdle and Imperial Commander showed his true colours in the Ryanair to down hot favourite Voy Por Ustedes. The same Big Buck’s who wasn’t even intended to be jumping hurdles this season just a short while ago….

Less surprising was a 577-1 handicap double for Venetia Williams courtesy of Kayf Aramis in the Pertemps and Something Wells in the Festival Plate. We knew she’d come to the party sooner or later, although Davy Russell’s delayed tactics aboard Notable D’Estruval in the Plate left a few observers scratching their heads.

All in all a bookmakers day – two odds jollies turned over to knock the stuffing out of punters, plus a gamble on Poker De Sivola going astray in the Kim Muir.

Still, hope springs eternal, here’s the plan for Gold Cup day:

1.30 – JCB Triumph Hurdle

Walkon can get punters off to a flyer and put a smile back on Choc Thornton’s face after he took a kicking in the Champion Chase. He looked a class act when winning here last time, and chief market rival Zaynar showed all the acceleration of a fridge freezer in a recent piece of work at Kempton Park.

He’ll be better on the day but he’ll have to be at his very best to stop the ultra tough Walkon – 5/1 with Toteport and Paddy Power looks the way to go. Zaynar came out on top last time they met, but Walkon looks primed to reverse that form.

Triumph Hurdle Odds
2.05 – Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle (Handicap)

Dave’s Dream goes in search of the Imperial Cup/Cheltenham £75,000 bonus here, but I fancy Sunnyhillboy to ruin that particular plot – a ready winner at the Open meeting in November he’s been kept fresh for this target since a December victory at Sandown – back him each way at 8/1 (general).

County Hurdle Odds

2.40 – Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Pride Of Dulcote can make his mark here – Alpha Ridge looks likely to make the running and set this up as a match between Cape Tribulation and Pride Of Dulcote. I have to favour Ruby Walsh’s mount on a testing track with the drying ground very much in his favour. The 7/2 with Blue Square and Paddy Power looks reasonable.

Albert Bartlett Hurdle Odds
3.20 – totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup

Kauto? Denman? Neptune? Madison?

Personally I’m Neptune Collonges all the way as he comes with none of the question marks associated with his more illustrious stablemates. This likeable grey continues to improve, was placed in the race last year, and looks sure to give his running.
The 6/1 looks a cracking each way bet with Bet365, Totesport and Victor Chandler.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

4.00 – Christie’s Foxhunter Chase

A contest I’m really looking forward to, with the chance to see Clive Smith’s distinctive colours back in the winner’s enclosure as Royal Auclair takes his chance in the Foxhunters. Now a 12 year old he’s run in all the top races down the years and can still be a force at this level following recent Hunter Chase wins at Sandown and Fontwell.

Back him each way at 10/1 (general)

Foxhunters Chase Odds
4.40 – Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

David Pipe matches Willie Mullins’ feat in the Bumper by saddling eight of the 24 runners in the race named after his father, and he can hit the target with Big Eared Fran, a horse who looked the real deal in winning at Sandown last Saturday. There’s 5/1 available with VCBet, Paddy Power and William Hill.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle
5.15 – Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase (Handicap)

Venetia Williams was firing on all cylinders on Thursday winning with 16/1 Kayf Aramis and 33/1 Something Wells, and she can notch again here with in-form Lorient Express.

The 10 year old is in the form of his life and can trouble the judge at 16/1 each way (general).

Grand Annual Chase Odds

Good luck!

Day Three Cheltenham tips – Voy Por the banker‏

Another cracking day here at Cheltenham with the headlines belonging to Ruby Walsh with a 14/1 treble (the first since Mick Fitzgerald notched a hat-trick back in 1999), Master Minded’s second Champion Chase win, and a major celebration for the Irish as they threaten to dominate this year’s Festival.

Horses crossing the Irish sea have accounted for a whopping eight of the 13 races run so far on days one and two, and there could be a couple more in the offing on Thursday:

1.30 – Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase

Tony Martin could be about to unleash one of his handicap specials as Northern Alliance lines up in the Jewson. Campaigned over fences this season he has shaped well at slightly shorter distances, and with Ruby Walsh booked he can take the opener at 15/2 with Paddy Power.

Jewson Novices Handicap Odds

2.05 – Pertemps Final (Handicap Hurdle)

A fiendishly tricky puzzle to work out this one, but I’m rowing in with an in-form horse in the shape of Jonjo O’Neill’s Synchronised, the winner of a key qualifier at Haydock on Valentines Day, and a horse on the up.

O’Neill’s string seem to be in good nick at present, and the Jackdaws Castle trainer shrewdly opts for the talents of 5lb claimer Richie Killoran in the plate to offset his 7lb rise for that Haydock win (Pennek, Heathcliff and Scriptwriter all reoppose, while second horse Tazbar is considered good enough to run in the World Hurdle).

Back Synchronised each way at 11/1 with Paddy Power, who are also paying out a very handy extra place 1/4 odds 1-2-3-4-5.

Pertemps Handicap Odds

2.40 – Ryanair Chase

Time to nail my colours to the mast with the banker of the entire meeting Voy Por Ustedes – a Cheltenham specialist whose Ascot demolition job against Gwanako and Tamarinbleu last time makes him mighty hard to beat here.

The eight year old looks better than ever this season, and I expect him to charge up the Cheltenham hill with the Ryanair at his mercy.

Don’t forget he’d be looking at wins in key Festival races for the past four years if it wasn’t for a certain Master Minded 12 months ago! There’s no joker in the pack to spoil his party tomorrow so get on at 11/10 with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes.

Latest Ryan Air Chase Odds

3.20 – Ladbrokes World Hurdle

The feature race can also go the way of the market leader with Kasbah Bliss a warm order to go one better than a year ago when second to Inglis Drever.

With the great ‘Ingles’ now living out a long and happy retirement it’s time for a new name at the top of the staying hurdle tree, and Kasbah Bliss showed in his Rendlesham romp that he’s the one to make his mark.

His Flat form during the Autumn was superb, winning a Group 3 and collecting prize money in the Group 1 Cadran on Arc weekend, and the World Hurdle trophy can go to back to France with echoes of the great Baracouda.

Back him at 5/4 with Paddy Power.

An honorable mention too for Mighty Man - he’s a massive 40/1 with both Totesport and Stan James, but even though this race is seen as a stepping stone to an assault on a third Aintree Hurdle, this horse returns from a two year injury layoff here showing signs he retains plenty of his old ability and could sneak a place at massive odds.

World Hurdle Odds

4.00 – Freddie Williams Festival Plate (Handicap Chase)

Arthur Moore’s Notable d’Estruval could be the answer here. I suspect his cunning trainer believes he has a well handicapped horse at his disposal, and at 10/1 (general) he can make the frame.

Freddie Williams Festival Plate Odds

4.40 – Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Memorial Handicap Chase

Traditionally viewed as one of the easier handicaps to win at the meeting this race can go the way of Nicky Henderson’s Shouldhavehadthat – twice a winner at Newbury this season he benefits from the assistance of top Amateur Sam Waley-Cohen in the saddle, and can take this at 9/1 with Betfred.

He beat National Hunt Cup winner Tricky Trickster earlier this campaign on Hennessy Day, and then followed up in December beating Kim Muir favourite Poker De Sivola. His rate of improvement means he can confirm that form here.

Kim Muir Betting Odds

Good luck!

Tips for Day One of the 2009 Cheltenham Festival – Bring it On!

Cheltenham is already alive with the hum of final preparations, the course looks in top nick, the ground is currently Good to Soft on both the new and old courses, and the forecast rain hasn’t yet arrived. Let battle commence!

Tuesday’s tips:

1.30pm – williamhill.com Supreme Novices’ Hurdle - Take a bit of the remaining 6/1 each way with SportingBet about David Pipe’s Torphichen winning the opening race of the Festival.

He was in a class of his own on his latest appearance at Sandown, the form of which has worked out really well.

Lob into the equation his handy 8lb age allowance and you have a decent argument for an investment. I know Pipe is keen on his chances, and don’t forget heavily backed favourite Cousin Vinny endured a rough ferry crossing from Ireland and didn’t eat up when he arrived.

Latest Supreme Novices Hurlde Odds

2.05pm – Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase – Long time favourite Tatenen looks to be the one to take a decidedly average looking renewal of this contest. He’ll appreciate a strong gallop, the lack of which was his undoing when beaten by Follow The Plan at Leopardstown at Christmas time.

He looked excellent when winning here at the Open meeting in November, and has the gears to take this for Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh. The 4/1 with bet365 looks a fair reflection of his chances.

Compare the Latest Arkle Chase Odds

2.40 – William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase – Top weight Star De Mohaison can stamp his class on this race and defy top weight.

The 2006 Royal & SunAlliance Chase winner hasn’t seen much racing since his Festival triumph, restricted by chronic tendon troubles.

However, with those injury worries now firmly in the past the eight year old, who ran his best race for a long time when a narrow second here under a big weight in a competitive December handicap, can make up for lost time.

It was touch and go whether connections launched him into a Gold Cup bid such is the high regard with which he is held, and at 10/1 each way with Boylesports he’s going to be very hard to keep out of the frame.

William Hill Handicap Trophy Odds

3.20 – Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle – With the rain forecast to arrive later this evening and 22 rivals to contend with I’ll happily take a watching brief where hot favourite Binocular is concerned.

Instead sniff out a bit of value and have a look at Ashkazar, currently a whopping 22/1 with VCbet, and last year’s winner Katchit, currently 14/1 (Champion Hurdle Odds Comparison).

Ashkazar ran a cracking trial in the Kingwell and is far too big at his inflated price, while Katchit seems to lit up at the sight of Cheltenham and could be a different horse on Tuesday afternoon.

Both should be backed each way with realistic chances of making the frame, and don’t forget bet365 are paying four places on the race.

4.00 – Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase (Handicap) – The quandry of which Enda Bolger horse to back is a teaser for fans of the Cross Country race, but I’m really keen on the idea of Garde Champetre following up last year’s runaway success.

While this time around he does face the imposte of top weight it didn’t prevent Spot Thedifference from winning this contest in 2005, and with Nina Carberry doing the steering I fancy him to fend off stablemate L’Ami. Get involved at 4/1 with Betfred or Victor Chandler.

Cross Country Hurdle Odds

4.40 – David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle - A race I’m thoroughly looking forward to! All the money in recent days has been for Willie Mullins’ Quevega, seemingly based upon one placed run in a Grade 1 hurdle in France on atrocious ground behind stablemate Hurricane Fly.

She won well enough last time out at Punchestown but didn’t beat much, and she runs into a streetwise opponent in the shape of Lucy Wadham’s United here.

United has some cracking form in the book: a former winner of Punchestown’s Champion Four Year Old hurdle, she also made the frame in the World Hurdle plus the Irish equivalent back in 2007, and has returned from a long absence looking as good as ever with wins at Haydock and Ascot.

The Ascot performance was only workmanlike, but she’ll appreciate a proper gallop and can reward her patient connections with victory on the big stage here.

Donald McCain’s decision to run Whiteoak in the Champion Hurdle has left the door ajar, and at 9/2 with Paddy Power United can take the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle.

David Nicholson Mares Hurdle Odds

Good luck on Day One!

Big value tips for the Racing Post Chase!‏

This weekend’s big race looks a belter, with a maximum field of 20 lining up over 3m for the Racing Post Chase live on Channel 4 from Kempton Park.

Paul Nicholls is four handed in the race, and number one amongst his squad has to be Sky Bet Chase winner Big Fella Thanks, who has attracted significant support in recent days, and is a best price 7/2 shot with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes at the time of writing.

Connections won this race 12 months ago with Gungadu taking the spoils as a 4/1 favourite for the Barber-Findlay axis, and it’s known that Harry Findlay has been active in availing himself of some larger prices about Big Fella Thanks earlier in the week.

It was hard not to be impressed with how he won at Doncaster in the hands of Christian Williams, scoring his first win over fences at the fifth time of asking.

Big Fella Thanks was also probably value for a bit more than the official margin that day, running out an 11 length winner over the classy Ungaro (who re-opposes here), but the handicapper has had his his say, slapping him with a 13lb rise for that success.

Although a year younger than his predecessor he too has the advantage of Ruby Walsh doing the steering, Nicholls’ number 1 jockey taking over from Williams.

That said he’s shot up the weights to a mark of 149 now, and a right handed speed track might not be ideal for a horse who looks an out and out stayer. His Doncaster win was an emphatic and dour display, but for me he looks short enough in the market now.

Nicholls also has top weight Nozic compressing the handicap, a cute move since he takes 5lb off his back via the very capable Harry Skelton, but the Rowland Meyrick winner strikes me as vulnerable off this sort of mark, and I’d struggle to recommend him after failing to complete at Cheltenham last time.

Also boarding the horsebox from Ditcheat will be Denman’s brother Silverburn, a high class novice who came into this season looking as though he had the world at his feet.

It hasn’t quite panned out like that though, and when you stop to consider how his star has faded sice being sent off favourite for the Paddy Power Gold Cup three months back, it’s astonishing how he’s now dismissed in a race of this calibre.

Dismissed he is though, as despite a wind op that was meant to work the oracle that Cheltenham flop was followed by a dismal showing when odds on at Exeter. He has it all to prove.

Well backed in recent days has been Keith Goldsworthy’s Hold Em after favourable mentions in various prominent tipping columns, and now generally an 8/1 and 9/1 shot he gets in at the foot of the weights with 10st 1lb, plus the 5lb claim of rising star Rhys Flint.

Placed in the Feltham Novices’ Chase at Kempton behind Breedsbreeze at Christmas Hold Em then dipped his toe into handicap chase company for the first time on New Year’s Day, running third behind Stan and Fier Normand at Cheltenham.

My impression having viewed that race from the Cheltenham betting ring through a pair of slightly sleep deprived eyes was that he’d be best going right handed, so Kempton could well suit.

What concerns me though is his jumping, which needs to improve markedly to take one of these races. Still, he rates as place material.

Definitely worth a mention is Tom George’s Nacarat, a French import who got his act together in formidable style over 2m 3f at Donny last time on the same card as Big Fella Thanks won the Sky Bet.

Always travelling like a winner he won that race at a canter, beating Yes Sir with contemptuous ease in the hands of AP McCoy.

It’s little surprise the champ has opted to stick with him – if he can defy a deserved 12lb rise and step up successfully in trip then he has it all going for him – George reckons he wants to go right handed on a flat track, so hey presto, take a slice of the 10/1 available with Bet365 and Victor Chandler.

Also carrying my cash will be an old favourite of mine Lacdoudal. I can’t resist having a few quid each way on this classy grey after watching him display plenty of his old relish for the task when trying to give lumps of weight to a decent young horse in Can’t Buy Time at Sandown the last day.

The 2006 Betfred Gold Cup winner has a chance off a mark of 142, and you can be certain trainer Philip Hobbs wouldn’t have persevered with the old timer if he didn’t think the 10-year-old still had the ability to cut the mustard at the top level.

Off for nearly two years with a leg injury Hobbs re-introduced him over hurdles at Cheltenham, a race which made me fear this son of Cadoudal ought to be seeing out his days chasing sheep in a field in Garstang rather than toiling around at the back trying to recapture former glories.

I needn’t have worried though, as back over fences he made a proper fist of it at Sandown, delighting connections sufficiently to ensure a tilt at the Racing Post made it onto the radar.

Third in this race to Simon in 2007 when rated 8lb higher than he is now Lacdoudal has plenty going for him.

The stats speak favourably, since his trainer’s last 13 runners in the contest have yielded three winners, two seconds and two thirds.

The case becomes more compelling when you realise this is a race jockey Richard Johnson simply loves to win – taking it in 2000 on Gloria Victis, 2001 on Young Spartacus, 2002 on Gunther McBride, and 2005 on the ill-fated Farmer Jack, as well as finishing in the frame in 1997, 2003, 2004 and 2007!

I suspect there could be a major prize left in Lacdoudal yet, so help yourself to a bit of 16/1 each way with Coral.

Good luck!

Tom’s Racing Post Chase tips (3:10 Kempton – Saturday 21st Feb):

Nacarat win @ 10/1 – Bet365 and Victor Chandler

Lacdoudal e/w @ 16/1- Coral

Look to Ascot for Winning Tips this Weekend

You know things can’t be too bad when staring at you from the box directly ahead is Gold Cup winner Denman, to the left is runaway Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Master Minded, and to the right is treble King George winner Kauto Star.

That was the sight that confronted us early this morning when we paid a visit to the Ditcheat, base of Champion trainer Paul Nicholls to get the lowdown on Denman’s road to recovery following his treatment for an irregular heartbeat.

The big horse looked in great nick, cantering up the famous Manor Farm gallop ears-pricked looking every inch the star he is. Tune in to tomorrow’s Morning Line for some more detailed quotes from the frankly brilliant Nicholls, who couldn’t be more accomodating in keeping the public up-to-speed with one of his favourites. He’s all systems go for a tilt at Newbury’s Aon Chase on February 7th, so fingers crossed he’ll be as good as ever.

It can be little wonder so many winners are sent out week after week by Nicholls, there’s a great buzz about the place that seems to have everyone smiling, right the way up from the lads doing the mucking out to the bloke who makes the decisions. First class.

Onto this weekend’s sport and opportunity knocks on an Ascot card jam packed full of quality action tomorrow afternoon, and I’m especially looking forward to seeing Lucy Wadham’s classy United serve it up in the Warfield Mares’ Hurdle at 2.50pm.

Off the track for 20 months after a fine third in the Champion Stayers’ Hurdle at the 2007 Punchestown Festival, she bounced back with a lively performance to see off Chief Yeoman at Haydock on the Saturday before Christmas, and said to have thrived since then, she’s going to take all the beating under the in-form Dominic Elsworth.

Her obvious long term target is the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and she should take this en-route.

On the same card I really fancy Free World to advertise his Arkle claims in the Montpelier Group Lighting Novices’ Chase (1.40pm). I’m still not quite sure how he managed to get chinned in the dying strides by the gutsy Araldur at Sandown last time out (Choc Thornton’s ride like a man possessed might have something to do with it!), but I fancy him to get back on the winning trail tomorrow afternoon at the expense of the highly touted Calgary Bay.

Free World’s November defeat of the Philip Hobbs trained Planet Of Sound now reads especially well after he came out and won a hot contest at Newbury earlier this week.

It’s a thriller in prospect, with the second and fourth in the Arkle betting going toe to toe, and it could be worth dipping back into the Arkle market to take a bit of 14/1 each way about Free World for the long term target. (This column already advised fellow Nicholls’ inmate Tatenen at 16/1 for the Arkle back in October).

I also like the look of Karabak in the National Hunt Novices’ Hurlde at 3.55pm. Alan King’s six-year-old caused a bit of an upset when he beat Nicholl’s Mahonia on Ruby Walsh’s comeback ride at Cheltenham in December, and he can go in again on his third try over hurdles.

He wants a fast pace and will definitely benefit from the step up in trip. Don’t forget only Mad Max has beaten him over timber so far, and he came out and won again this week too.

Lastly if you’re looking for one for the yankee at Ascot don’t miss Zaynar in the Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at 12.30pm. He’ll be no price, but the 7/2 favourite for the Triumph Hurdle ought to enhance his already lofty reputation earnt in fine style with an emphatic win on his Newbury debut a few weeks back.

PS, It appears the representatives of Manchester City Football Club weren’t having a laugh when they travelled to Milan to table a quite ridiculous €120m bid for Brazilian maestro Kaka. Beam me up! Unless Kaka’s on drugs or forced to sign at knife point there surely can’t be a prayer of him electing to exchange the San Siro for Stockport, Il Duomo for Dukinfield, Malpensa for Moston and pasta and olive oil for a nourishing dogfood pastie.

Even more remarkable is the fact that Skybet are still offering 10/3 about Kaka pulling on a Milan shirt in the first game after the absurd transfer window slams shut. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea,but I can’t resist a quid on him staying put.

Good luck!

Dee Ee to take the Tolworth

Sandown’s Saturday card looks set to beat the frost on their first big day of 2009, and the best bet of the meeting look to be Nick Gifford’s Dee Ee Williams who can return to winning ways in the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle (2.40pm).

Short headed by Medermit in a hot contest at Ascot six days before Christmas Dee Ee Williams made a big impression with wins at Cheltenham and Ascot earlier in the season, and he can get back on the victory trail at the Esher track. The early quote of 2/1 with bet365 and Paddy Power looks a fair reflection of his chances.

He faces some decent opposition in Clay Hollister who made a pleasing reappearance when winning a weak Sandown race after a lengthy layoff on Tingle Creek day, but this is a massive step up in class and I’ll be surprised if he has enough guns to win this.

Be sure to tune in to the Morning Line to hear the views of his trainer Nicky Henderson, our studio guest.

The early favourite for the race with the firms is Paul Nicholls’ Mahonia, but he folded pretty tamely at Cheltenham last time in a race won by Karabak, and it’ll be fascinating to see how they ride him tomorrow, as Ruby Walsh reckons he’s all-speed whereas Nicholls believes he’s an out and out stayer. Either way, they’ll have their work cut out to reel in Dee Ee Williams.
