All eyes on Santa Anita for this weekend's tips
Two great days racing from the sun-drenched Los Angeles suburb of Santa Anita involving a typically strong European challenge are just around the corner, and to celebrate I’ll be enjoying the LA weather from the comfort of the somewhat more inclement surroundings of Doncaster.
Put the violin away though and get stuck in to to the best bets across the 14 race card.
Racing UK and At the Races are showing the whole thing, and on Friday night I can pass on a strong word for American trainer Jonathan Sheppard’s four year old filly Informed Decision in the Filly & Mare Sprint over seven furlongs on the Pro-Ride surface (11.02pm).

After four months of mayhem on the July Course it’s back to business as usual for patrons of HQ’s famous Rowley Mile, and they’ll be packing in for what look to be quality cards on both Friday and Saturday.
It doesn’t look like we’ll have to fish too deep below the surface to get a winner on the board on Friday, with Sir Michael Stoute’s improving four year old Nayef gelding Confront a warm order to notch his fourth victory of the campaign in the aptly named Nayef Joel Stakes at 1.55pm.
Confront has made real strides this season, but still has some way to go to match the exploits of his famous father, the winner of a Champion Stakes, a Sheema Classic, a Juddmonte International, and a Prince Of Wales’s Stakes among others. Not a bad haul!
Confront’s season began with a win over nine furlongs in a Newmarket handicap, and has progressed smartly via a Group 2 Summer Mile second to Aqlaam (the same Aqlaam who went on to win the Group 1 Prix du Moulin) to wins at York and Haydock.

A high class double header from Newbury and Ayr is on the cards for Channel 4 viewers this weekend, and at the Berkshire track Brian Meehan’s razor sharp Johannesburg colt Radiohead can leave the opposition trailing in his wake now he steps up to six furlongs in the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes at 2.20pm.
Penalised for his Group 2 win at Royal Ascot back in June he has to concede 3lbs to six rivals here, including Mark Johnston’s smart unbeaten Awzaan, plus Richard Hannon’s Doncaster winner Angel’s Pursuit, but the way this fella sees out his races with a potent finishing burst suggests he’ll be even better upped in trip.
His relatives certainly provides plenty of encouragement, not least Johannesburg himself; a winner of the Phoenix Stakes, a Prix Morny and a Middle Park all over six, plus a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile over an extended mile for good measure.
My good mate Emmanuel Denton was convinced he was going to do a ‘Kingsgate Native’ and win the Nunthorpe as a two year old, but although he didn’t win he put in a mighty shift against the older horses in Group 1 company and won plenty of fans in the process, more than enough to suggest a reproduction of that will clinch this providing he stays.

The last of the week’s big prizes provides the focal point of Friday’s card at York, and in receipt of up to a whopping 24lbs from the remainder I cannot resist a good bet on Brian Meehan’s speedball Johannesburg colt Radiohead in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (3.25pm).
If you’re quick there’s still a generous looking 5/1 to be had with William Hill, and that looks a very fair price about a horse who positively destroyed them in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot when last seen back in June.

Now he steps up in class, against the older horses for the first time, on only his fourth career apearance, but crucially attempts to emulate Kingsgate Native’s success in this race in 2007 when the massive weight allowance enjoyed by two year olds proved decisive.
