The sight of the cream of the speed chasing divsion flying over the railway fences and banking right before the stiff uphill finish in front of the packed Sandown Park grandstands means it can only be Tingle Creek day, one of the elite days of the entire season, and a serious thrill for National Hunt devotees the length and the breadth of the nation.
The fact Father Christmas is in reception as you reach the track suspiciously wearing a pair of Nike Air Max and dishing out free mince pies keeps the theme going, and with a small but select field of five heading to post for the feature race at 2.25pm there’s a lot to look forward to, even if you cannot stand those revolting pies.

It’s a fantastic race, especially since only one of those five can be written off with any confidence, although I’ll definitely be taking on antepost favourite Big Zeb who heads the Irish challenge in the hands of Barry Geraghty.

Morning Line guest Peter Chapple-Hyam’s Oasis Dream colt Monitor Closely can provide the answer to an open looking Ladbrokes St Leger (3.00pm).
Supplemented by connections for £45,000 he looks to be the bet at 9/2 with either Betfred or William Hill, given that he had the speed to run in a Guineas, but also the stamina to demolish good horses in the Great Voltigeur over a mile and a half.

He won going away at York and looked as though have stayed around Chepstow let alone Donny, and if his stamina does hold up now he steps into the unknown territory of the Leger’s extended 1m 6f, then he really does have an awful lot going for him.

A year ago the heavens opened, and what should have been a day to remember at Haydock Park turned into empty car parks and a sodden track saturated by a constant downpour, a situation that left us with a rather skinny programme for two hours that afternoon!
Now, a shade over 24 hours before Kieren Fallon begins what certain quarters of the press have taken to calling ‘phase two’ of his career, we’re hoping for better luck as the Newton-le-Willows track stages its ever popular Betfred Sprint Cup card.
My suspicion is that Fred, who had the misfortune to employ me for three years, might well be handing over his biggest sponsored prize (apart, of course, from the annual Betfred & Birchwood Shopping Centre Best Dressed Shellsuit Competition) to Fallon a little after 3.30pm, once the former champ has booted home 7/2 (totesport) shot High Standing in the Group 1 Sprint Cup.

You know your luck’s in when the richest man in Ireland is on the phone raving about the chances of one at Dundalk, and that’s exactly what occurred when my ever reliable correspondent James ‘Formula One’ Cracknell picked up the blower to insist I have a few shillings on Crying Time in the EBF Auction Maiden over 7f on the All Weather tomorrow afternoon (3.35pm).
Closer inspection suggests he’s got a very solid case too – Crying Time’s debut was as a highly encouraging runner up when 33/1 to the very useful Viscount Nelson (subsequently a winner of a Listed event beating a stablemate of Crying Time) at Leopardstown, and reports suggest this likeable son of Chevalier has improved for that experience.
Neatly drawn in stall 2 he can gain his first career win here.
Closer to home I’ll be patrolling the Newbury betting ring for Channel 4, where the bad news is it’s my turn to cough up for the ice creams. Apparently we are in the grip of a recession though, so the chances of anyone getting a flake are minimal.

Having made the annual pilgrimage to Blackpool on Tuesday night for the Stan James World Matchplay Darts at the Winter Gardens, an event marred by sickening sightings of all the usual shameless suspects attempting to drown themselves on the contents of the free bar in the players’ lounge, it’s a rather smarter affair in prospect this weekend with Ascot hosting a fantastic card on King George day.
Out go the shorts and flip flops (it just wouldn’t do to attend the arrers overdressed) and in come some the rather more stylish threads associated with any trip to the Berkshire venue. They might moan about the new stand and the course layout, but it takes some beating when there’s a decent sized crowd in there.
The punters might be a shade less raucous than on the Fylde coast, but they may well be tempted to do the conga up and down the members’ lawn if Sir Michael Stoute’s Desert Creek can resume the form that saw him rack up consecutive wins at Yarmouth, Windsor and Haydock by taking the Emirates NBD Cup over a mile at 3.15pm.

Positively itching to get back on a racecourse after a few days layed up on doctor’s orders this Saturday’s trip to Newbury simply cannot come soon enough, and with it the chance to see the next stage in the rise and rise of William Haggas’s brilliant four year old High Standing in the Shadwell Stakes at 2.20pm.
Making hay of late in handicap company High Standing produced a cracking effort to mow them down in Royal Ascot’s Wokingham Stakes, coming late in the final 75 yards to claim top weight Asset, and this is the day we find out if he really is good enough to make the transition from talking horse to the real deal.
He’s long been spoken of as a potential Group horse running in handicaps, and having finished first or second on his last eight appearances, and in doing so risen to a mark of 105, he’s more than earned a tilt at a decent Group prize.
This’ll be no walk in the park though, with some battle hardened types set to line up, including comeback horse War Arstist (third in the 2008 running of the July Cup), plus Prime Defender, Icelandic and Edge Closer.

Sweltering conditons and the 48 hour declaration of Guineas and Derby hero Sea The Stars means they’ll be packing into Sandown Park on Saturday afternoon for what looks set to be a top notch card at the Esher venue.
Sandown has to be one of my favourite tracks be it on the Flat or over the sticks – you can pretty much guarantee a decent crowd for the better days, the racing tends to be well above average, the facilities are in good nick and the viewing is excellent. That said they do have very excitable car park attendants, but you can’t have it all…..

Coral sponsor their big day on the level and have cleverly come up with some catchy new race titles for the afternoon’s action; of particular interest is the Coral Challenge Handicap over a mile at 2.40pm.

If like me you’re doing the sensible thing and boarding an Aer Lingus flight to Dublin and making the short hop to the Curragh this weekend then you’ve every right to be excited, for while John Oxx might not have made his mind up about Sea The Stars taking his place in the Irish Derby, everything else looks set fair for a cracking two days racing at the County Kildare venue under the gaze of the RTE cameras.
Just keep your fingers crossed your flight isn’t similar to the one I caught a short while back for the Irish Guineas weekend containing a hen party from St Helens, who chose the ideal location of the rear rows of a passenger aircraft to stage a fight over who exactly had earned ‘air miles’ with the prospective groom, so to speak. With the insults raging and a bout of shoving occurring at 34,000 feet my best piece of advice is not to let them catch you laughing. I know this to be good advice as I failed to heed it….

There looks to be plenty in the favour of Sir Michael Stoute’s talented four year old Sadler’s Wells colt Doctor Fremantle as he steps back up in trip to 1m 4f in Saturday’s Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (3.05pm), a race his trainer has done well in down the years.
His seasonal reappearance did this column a favour bearing the narrowest of wins from Staying On in Chester’s Group 3 Huxley Stakes, a performance full of grit as he could easily have chucked in the towel after being forced wide on the bend.
Stoute had indicated the Coronation Cup would be his likely destination after the Chester win, but patience in choosing this softer target can yield dividends.
Don’t forget his trainer wasn’t afraid to pitch him in against the very best last year, with a Group 3 win at Chester complemented by a fourth in New Approach’s Derby, plus a fourth in the Grand Prix de Paris and a disappointing show in the St Leger due to the ground.
