Expect Kauto to reign at Haydock as Racing weathers the storm – this weekend’s tips

The rain might be laying siege to various parts of the UK, but the expected deluge is yet to hit Haydock and all being well it’s all systems go for a top notch double header from both Ascot and the Newton-le-Willows track live on C4 on Saturday afternoon.

With Sunday boasting a cracking Aintree and Navan menu there’s plenty to look forward to for punters.

Before then one place where they’ve certainly had their fair share of the downpour is borders track Kelso, and Friday afternoon’s card includes a couple I fancy, with Gloucestershire handler Nigel Twiston-Davies (fresh from picking up his leading trainer award at the Cheltenham Open Meeting) sending novice chaser Little Josh on the long trek north (Biotal Beginners’ Chase 1.50pm).

He’ll go on the very testing ground as his win in bottomless ground at Chepstow in February testifies, and if he’s none the worse for an unfortunate capsize at Cheltenham last friday he can gain his first success over fences here, given that his first spin over the larger obstacles yielded a pleasing second to Door Boy at Aintree, and his yard are typically prospering at this time of year.

He was the best of these over hurdles, and should win with a bit to spare here as his cramped odds imply.

Pipe dreams of a Cheltenham super Sunday – today’s tips

The sun’s out, the scene’s set and Cheltenham’s buzzing in anticipation if a truly super Sunday. Today’s card contains a bit of everything – perfect!

With the ground against the odds on favourite in the opener I fancy Irish challenger Fosters Cross to make his mark (1.10pm).

He looked very good in beating Loosen My Load over hurdles at Tipperary in October (Loosen My Load won well here on Friday), before making the switch to fences at Galway, where he handled the stiff uphill finish in style to see off Schelm, conqueror of Paul Nicholls’ Free World at Warwick, earlier in the week.

Fosters Cross will clearly prefer the ground too – snaffle a bit of the 9/4 readily available with totesport, Betfred, Sportingbet or Skybet.

Day Three Cheltenham tips – Voy Por the banker‏

Another cracking day here at Cheltenham with the headlines belonging to Ruby Walsh with a 14/1 treble (the first since Mick Fitzgerald notched a hat-trick back in 1999), Master Minded’s second Champion Chase win, and a major celebration for the Irish as they threaten to dominate this year’s Festival.

Horses crossing the Irish sea have accounted for a whopping eight of the 13 races run so far on days one and two, and there could be a couple more in the offing on Thursday:

1.30 – Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase

Tony Martin could be about to unleash one of his handicap specials as Northern Alliance lines up in the Jewson. Campaigned over fences this season he has shaped well at slightly shorter distances, and with Ruby Walsh booked he can take the opener at 15/2 with Paddy Power.

Jewson Novices Handicap Odds

2.05 – Pertemps Final (Handicap Hurdle)

A fiendishly tricky puzzle to work out this one, but I’m rowing in with an in-form horse in the shape of Jonjo O’Neill’s Synchronised, the winner of a key qualifier at Haydock on Valentines Day, and a horse on the up.

O’Neill’s string seem to be in good nick at present, and the Jackdaws Castle trainer shrewdly opts for the talents of 5lb claimer Richie Killoran in the plate to offset his 7lb rise for that Haydock win (Pennek, Heathcliff and Scriptwriter all reoppose, while second horse Tazbar is considered good enough to run in the World Hurdle).

Back Synchronised each way at 11/1 with Paddy Power, who are also paying out a very handy extra place 1/4 odds 1-2-3-4-5.

Pertemps Handicap Odds

2.40 – Ryanair Chase

Time to nail my colours to the mast with the banker of the entire meeting Voy Por Ustedes – a Cheltenham specialist whose Ascot demolition job against Gwanako and Tamarinbleu last time makes him mighty hard to beat here.

The eight year old looks better than ever this season, and I expect him to charge up the Cheltenham hill with the Ryanair at his mercy.

Don’t forget he’d be looking at wins in key Festival races for the past four years if it wasn’t for a certain Master Minded 12 months ago! There’s no joker in the pack to spoil his party tomorrow so get on at 11/10 with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes.

Latest Ryan Air Chase Odds

3.20 – Ladbrokes World Hurdle

The feature race can also go the way of the market leader with Kasbah Bliss a warm order to go one better than a year ago when second to Inglis Drever.

With the great ‘Ingles’ now living out a long and happy retirement it’s time for a new name at the top of the staying hurdle tree, and Kasbah Bliss showed in his Rendlesham romp that he’s the one to make his mark.

His Flat form during the Autumn was superb, winning a Group 3 and collecting prize money in the Group 1 Cadran on Arc weekend, and the World Hurdle trophy can go to back to France with echoes of the great Baracouda.

Back him at 5/4 with Paddy Power.

An honorable mention too for Mighty Man - he’s a massive 40/1 with both Totesport and Stan James, but even though this race is seen as a stepping stone to an assault on a third Aintree Hurdle, this horse returns from a two year injury layoff here showing signs he retains plenty of his old ability and could sneak a place at massive odds.

World Hurdle Odds

4.00 – Freddie Williams Festival Plate (Handicap Chase)

Arthur Moore’s Notable d’Estruval could be the answer here. I suspect his cunning trainer believes he has a well handicapped horse at his disposal, and at 10/1 (general) he can make the frame.

Freddie Williams Festival Plate Odds

4.40 – Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Memorial Handicap Chase

Traditionally viewed as one of the easier handicaps to win at the meeting this race can go the way of Nicky Henderson’s Shouldhavehadthat – twice a winner at Newbury this season he benefits from the assistance of top Amateur Sam Waley-Cohen in the saddle, and can take this at 9/1 with Betfred.

He beat National Hunt Cup winner Tricky Trickster earlier this campaign on Hennessy Day, and then followed up in December beating Kim Muir favourite Poker De Sivola. His rate of improvement means he can confirm that form here.

Kim Muir Betting Odds

Good luck!

Day Two Cheltenham tips‏ – Irish eyes are smiling

Thought for Tuesday: Hurricane Fly has to be some horse if you stop to consider he had runaway Mares’ Hurdle winner Quevega in rear in a Grade 1 hurdle at Auteuil in June, and then comfortably accounted for Supreme Novices’ winner Go Native by 10 lengths at Leopardstown in December.

Wait for him to reappear at Aintree or Punchestown. It’ll be some show if Tuesday’s Cheltenham results are to be believed!

Looking ahead to Wednesday, here’s the lowdown on the seven race card:

1.30 – National Hunt Cup

Jonjo O’Neill has his string in form at exactly the right moment and can score in the opener with Can’t Buy Time. This progressive looking chaser won with any amount in hand at Sandown last time, and off level weights in this Amateur Riders’ event he can take this for the Jackdaws Castle trainer.

The wise deployment of Wichita Lineman to Tuesday’s William Hill Trophy leaves this at the mercy of his stablemate, and he can take this en-route to a possible tilt at the Grand National. Coral are best price in the village at 11/2.

Latest National Hunt Cup odds

2.05 – Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle

I’m really looking forward to seeing Karabak strutting his stuff on the big stage. He’ll love the step up in trip, won in emphatic style last time out at Ascot, and has recently been paid the compliment of being purchased by JP McManus.

Choc Thorton loses the ride as a result of that deal (McManus’s retained jockey AP McCoy takes over) and Choc’s evident despair at losing the mount suggests he’ll go mighty close, and the popular Thornton has even nominated the six year old as his Festival banker. If you don’t agree watch the tape of him settling the issue at Ascot, he surged clear of some good horses.

There’s still some 7/2 available with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes.

Compare Ballymore Hurdle Odds

2.40 – RSA Chase

A big chance for the Irish horses to shine here, and I’m sweet on the chances of Willie Mullins’ Cooldine.

He looked the real deal in winning the PJ Moriarty Chase at Leopardstown last time, doing a nice favour for readers of this column, and clearly improved for the step up in trip.

The form has been well and truly franked by Moriarty second Forpadydeplasterer emerging to win the Arkle here on Tuesday, and Ruby Walsh chooses him in preference to the quirky What A Friend.

There are no stamina doubts where he is concerned, and he’s a confident selection at 9/2 with Coral.

For anyone looking for a value each way play in the race Casey Jones has to be high on the list – he beat the subsequent Irish Arkle winner Golden Silver at Punchestown in November, then sprang a 25/1 surprise when defeating Trafford Lad over 3m at Leopardstown.

RSA Chase Odds

3.20 – Queen Mother Champion Chase

This should be an exhibition round from undisputed two mile king Master Minded, but take a look at the betting without the favourite markets – both Briareus and Well Chief merit closer attention.

4.00 – Coral Cup

Many more competitive 28 runner handicap hurdles you’d be hard pressed to find, but don’t be afraid to back Michael Hourigan’s bang in form Dancing Tornado to make the frame at a hefty 18/1 with Coral. (who alongside bet365, Boylesports and Paddy Power are paying five places on the race).

In the form of his life at Leopardstown and Ascot the last twice this fella richly deserves to win a big one, and can make a big impact here with a mere 10st 3lb to shoulder.

Regular pilot David Casey is on board, and with the cheekpieces once again in evidence I fancy him to be right in the thick of it.

Coral Cup Odds

4.40 – Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

Nicky Henderson’s French import Miss Sarenne could be the one to side with here.

She would have won with plenty to spare at Plumpton first time up had it not been for an unfortunate skirmish with the final hurdle (the one that denied AP winner no.3000 no less!), and she can gain compensation on a far greater stage tomorrow.

This lovely prospect has been gobbled up by JP McManus since then and turns out in his silks in the Fred Winter, she’ll appreciate better ground and should be backed each way at 8/1 (general), or at 7/1 with bet365 who pay 5 places on the race.

Fred Winter Odds

5.15 – Weatherbys Champion Bumper

Willie Mullins saddles eight of the 24 runners in the bumper, but he could be frustrated by Dermot Weld’s Rite Of Passage, who’s been the subject of some upbeat reports from his great trainer, and has attracted strong support in recent days.

Already a winner at both Galway and Naas, he’s the one to be with in the bumper at 5/1 with Coral and William Hill. Don’t forget the concessions too – bet365, Boylesports and Paddy Power are paying 4 places on the race.

Champion Bumper Odds Comparison

Good luck!

Look to Ascot for Winning Tips this Weekend

You know things can’t be too bad when staring at you from the box directly ahead is Gold Cup winner Denman, to the left is runaway Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Master Minded, and to the right is treble King George winner Kauto Star.

That was the sight that confronted us early this morning when we paid a visit to the Ditcheat, base of Champion trainer Paul Nicholls to get the lowdown on Denman’s road to recovery following his treatment for an irregular heartbeat.

The big horse looked in great nick, cantering up the famous Manor Farm gallop ears-pricked looking every inch the star he is. Tune in to tomorrow’s Morning Line for some more detailed quotes from the frankly brilliant Nicholls, who couldn’t be more accomodating in keeping the public up-to-speed with one of his favourites. He’s all systems go for a tilt at Newbury’s Aon Chase on February 7th, so fingers crossed he’ll be as good as ever.

It can be little wonder so many winners are sent out week after week by Nicholls, there’s a great buzz about the place that seems to have everyone smiling, right the way up from the lads doing the mucking out to the bloke who makes the decisions. First class.

Onto this weekend’s sport and opportunity knocks on an Ascot card jam packed full of quality action tomorrow afternoon, and I’m especially looking forward to seeing Lucy Wadham’s classy United serve it up in the Warfield Mares’ Hurdle at 2.50pm.

Off the track for 20 months after a fine third in the Champion Stayers’ Hurdle at the 2007 Punchestown Festival, she bounced back with a lively performance to see off Chief Yeoman at Haydock on the Saturday before Christmas, and said to have thrived since then, she’s going to take all the beating under the in-form Dominic Elsworth.

Her obvious long term target is the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and she should take this en-route.

On the same card I really fancy Free World to advertise his Arkle claims in the Montpelier Group Lighting Novices’ Chase (1.40pm). I’m still not quite sure how he managed to get chinned in the dying strides by the gutsy Araldur at Sandown last time out (Choc Thornton’s ride like a man possessed might have something to do with it!), but I fancy him to get back on the winning trail tomorrow afternoon at the expense of the highly touted Calgary Bay.

Free World’s November defeat of the Philip Hobbs trained Planet Of Sound now reads especially well after he came out and won a hot contest at Newbury earlier this week.

It’s a thriller in prospect, with the second and fourth in the Arkle betting going toe to toe, and it could be worth dipping back into the Arkle market to take a bit of 14/1 each way about Free World for the long term target. (This column already advised fellow Nicholls’ inmate Tatenen at 16/1 for the Arkle back in October).

I also like the look of Karabak in the National Hunt Novices’ Hurlde at 3.55pm. Alan King’s six-year-old caused a bit of an upset when he beat Nicholl’s Mahonia on Ruby Walsh’s comeback ride at Cheltenham in December, and he can go in again on his third try over hurdles.

He wants a fast pace and will definitely benefit from the step up in trip. Don’t forget only Mad Max has beaten him over timber so far, and he came out and won again this week too.

Lastly if you’re looking for one for the yankee at Ascot don’t miss Zaynar in the Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at 12.30pm. He’ll be no price, but the 7/2 favourite for the Triumph Hurdle ought to enhance his already lofty reputation earnt in fine style with an emphatic win on his Newbury debut a few weeks back.

PS, It appears the representatives of Manchester City Football Club weren’t having a laugh when they travelled to Milan to table a quite ridiculous €120m bid for Brazilian maestro Kaka. Beam me up! Unless Kaka’s on drugs or forced to sign at knife point there surely can’t be a prayer of him electing to exchange the San Siro for Stockport, Il Duomo for Dukinfield, Malpensa for Moston and pasta and olive oil for a nourishing dogfood pastie.

Even more remarkable is the fact that Skybet are still offering 10/3 about Kaka pulling on a Milan shirt in the first game after the absurd transfer window slams shut. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea,but I can’t resist a quid on him staying put.

Good luck!
Tom

Different day, same outcome for the Weekend Nap!

A frosty night in Newcastle put paid to our plans to clean up at Newcastle last Saturday, but Punjabi still holds the whip hand in the re-arranged WBX.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Wetherby this Saturday (1.50pm).

Only six now go to post, and with two-time Fighting Fifth winner Harchibald now confined to barracks back in Ireland, this should be a straight-forward task for Nicky Henderson’s classy five-year-old. Both favourites and five-year-olds have a cracking record in the race, and that looks set to improve further still. He’s versatile enough to cope with this sharper track, and should have more than enough up his sleeve to see off Sublimity, who he had in rear at both Cheltenham and Punchestown back in the spring.

If the ground were to dry up then Blue Bajan, a creditable third to the heavily gambled Sentry Duty at Ascot, could be the one for the forecast.

On the back of recent hype regarding a few missed opportunities, it was intriguing to see Paul Nicholls fail to send out a single runner from Sunday to Tuesday this week, and then only one at Plumpton on Wednesday, but he was back in the winners’ enclosure at Wincanton on Thursday, and could have something to smile about when Free World takes his chance in Sandown’s Betinternet.com Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at 2.00pm on Saturday.

The four-year-old has only had three starts in this country, but he bolted up over course and distance at the first time of asking over fences, beating some reasonable opposition by eight lengths and upwards on November Handicap day.

Champion jockey AP McCoy did the steering that day, and you ‘ll have to have been stuck in a very large snow drift all week to fail to know he’s back on board in the aftermath of fevered discussion about Sam Thomas’s current tribulations.

Suffice to say AP got a real tune out of Free World that day; Sandown is a serious test first time out over fences, but the fact all the 33/1 for the Arkle was hoovered up pre-race suggested big things were expected, and he duly delivered. I’m not about to suggest an antepost bet in a race where his trainer is spoilt for choice, but this looks a winnable-looking target as he continues his chasing education.

On the subject of the much-maligned Sam Thomas I might as well throw my hat into the ring and point out what a fantastic jockey he is, and a couple of disappointing results aren’t about to alter that opinion.

A seriously nice guy to boot, he’s a massive talent & will be back in the winners before you know it. Our build ‘em up and knock ‘em down media culture has hung him out to dry in recent days, but why on earth are people so desperate to see him fail? On the back of taking the first two races on the card at Wincanton on Thursday watch him boot home a few winners at Chepstow this weekend, and have a word with yourself if you’re still complaining about him.

What he really needs is a high profile Grade 1 winner to get his name back up in lights, and he can get exactly that as Noland returns to Ireland to line up in Punchestown’s John Durkan Memorial Chase over 2m 4f on Sunday at 2.05pm.

It’s a fascinating race involving none other that 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner War Of Attrition, who’s brought a massive smile to the face of all true jumping fans by winning both of his comeback runs to tentatively re-enter the ‘09 Gold Cup equation, but he could be about to hit a barrier in the shape of the fleet-footed Noland.

I fancy Sam will have too many guns for War Of Attrition over this trip, and Noland can do him for toe to record another win across the Irish sea after he hacked up at Down Royal on November 1st.

Coral are being more than generous with their 11/4 offering about Noland, since Irish firm Paddy Power go only 2/1 and others go as short as 11/8 . Take advantage before it’s gone.

Last up, there’ll be a monster crowd at Sandown on Saturday to see the Tingle Creek Chase, a race I’ve loved watching down the years, the speed chasers thundering over the railway fences and up the hill – brilliant.

Master Minded looked one in a million at Cheltenham in March, and he’s tough to oppose despite the way he folded at Aintree the following month. That said, at the prices I can’t resist having a few quid on Tidal Bay at 100/30 – a stand out price with Ladbrokes.

Never out of the first two in 15 runs, his chasing stats are phenomenal, with six wins from seven appearances, and a runaway Arkle success in his locker. I was at Catterick on Wednesday & watched him have a nice prep on the track after racing, he popped over a couple of fences with Denis O’Regan in the plate and looks in great nick, and if there is to be a miniature upset, he’s the one alright.

Good luck!
