Newbury, Lingfield & Haydock – this weekend’s best tips!

Positively itching to get back on a racecourse after a few days layed up on doctor’s orders this Saturday’s trip to Newbury simply cannot come soon enough, and with it the chance to see the next stage in the rise and rise of William Haggas’s brilliant four year old High Standing in the Shadwell Stakes at 2.20pm.

Making hay of late in handicap company High Standing produced a cracking effort to mow them down in Royal Ascot’s Wokingham Stakes, coming late in the final 75 yards to claim top weight Asset, and this is the day we find out if he really is good enough to make the transition from talking horse to the real deal.

He’s long been spoken of as a potential Group horse running in handicaps, and having finished first or second on his last eight appearances, and in doing so risen to a mark of 105, he’s more than earned a tilt at a decent Group prize.

This’ll be no walk in the park though, with some battle hardened types set to line up, including comeback horse War Arstist (third in the 2008 running of the July Cup), plus Prime Defender, Icelandic and Edge Closer.

Here Come the Girls! (For this weekend’s tips)

It’s a fair bet that plenty of the boozed up patrons staggering out of a brilliant three day Chester May Meeting won’t be making it much further than the adjacent ancient city walls, but fingers crossed that won’t apply to too many of the Channel 4 Racing team who’ll be hot-footing it in the direction of Gatwick Airport and more specifically, Lingfield Park, for Saturday’s Oaks and Derby Trials at the Surrey venue.

A few names spring to mind of great horses who’ve completed the Lingfield/Epsom colts double, not least High Rise in 1998 (aren’t winning bets always memorable?!), although Teenoso, Slip Anchor and Kahyasi also won the Lingfield Trial before winning the big one.

That said, I’ll be waiting ’til 3.45pm for a bet and the Group 3 totesportbingo.com Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes over 7f for which 10 go to post.

Barry Hills’ is having a week to remember after Ghanaati’s 1,000 Guineas triumph and Daraahem’s success in the Chester Cup, and the veteran trainer could be about to make a return visit to the winner’s podium courtesy of a success for game four year old Royal Applause filly Royal Confidence.

I’m not convinced how much winning this race is going to take, and while previous Group race winner Chantilly Tiffany is sure to attract plenty of interest, I liked the way Royal Confidence beat her at Doncaster’s Leger meeting in September, and fancy her to get her measure once again.

A seven furlong specialist, she was only beaten two and a half lengths in last year’s Guineas, and with Hill’s string in flying she can arrive fast and late to take this en-route to a likely tilt at Royal Ascot’s Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes.

Up the M1 at Nottingham I’ll also be investing a few shillings in another filly – snappy dresser Alan Berry’s Look Busy, who lines up in the Listed totesport.com Kilvington Fillies’ Stakes at 3.30pm.

Berry hasn’t changed his stinking blue puffa jacket since about 1987, and neither had Look Busy changed her coat when seeing off Crimson Fern in her recent winning seasonal re-appearance. She should improve markedly for that.

Tough as old boots she notched her seventh win inside a year at Bath over 5f just eleven days ago, and now stepping up to 6f Berry wants to take this before trying to land Haydock Park’s valuable Temple Stakes on May 23rd. Don’t be surprised if she heads to the ‘dock with another win under her belt.

Good luck!

Weekend tips:

2 Look Busy (win) 3.30 Nottingham (Saturday)

4 Royal Confidence (win) 3.45 Lingfield (Saturday)

Quevaga Just Champion in Punchestown Feature

A meeting which has seen Willie Mullins sweep all before him could be about to get even better as star mare Quevaga lines up for Punchestown’s Champion Hurdle at 5:30pm.

The run away winner of the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurlde at the Cheltenham Festival steps up to tackle Champion Hurdle winner Punjabi on home turf.

The sparkling form of her stable (who literally can do know wrong at this meeting so far) allied to her 5lb Mares allowance together with her ability to hand testing under foot conditions  means she looks a cracking bet at 2/1at Totesport.

Don’t forget the line of form from Auteuil last Summer which places her very close together with Hurricane Fly, now as short as 3/1 favourite for the 2010 Champion Hurdle.

Meanwhile, at Lingfield, get on the much improved Sehoy at 2/1 with ladbrokes in the ‘lucky last’ at 5:35.

Bronze can take gold as the tip for the Lingfield Winter Derby‏

He might have a few pounds to make up on the official figures but John Gosden’s Bronze Cannon can make the frame for us at 7/1 (general) in the sportingbet.com Winter Derby on Saturday afternoon (3.05pm).

Twice a winner on Kempton’s artificial surface the four year old has had a nice break since a slightly disappointing run at Lingfield in November, when he got squeezed up and lost ground at a vital stage in the listed Churchill Stakes, and with Ryan Moore booked he can certainly put his best foot forward here.

Before that Lingfield run he was seen to good effect when third at Newmarket, (the second horse that day Kirkless has subsequently been out in Dubai winning a handicap and finishing in the money twice in Group 3 company) and was positively thriving last Spring when twice a winner at HQ.

At that stage he held both Dante and Derby entries, and although this might be a more realistic level, he is undoubtedly viewed with high regard by his top stable.

Importantly we know he’ll stay Lingfield’s sharp 10 furlongs standing on his head, a statement which cannot be applied to hot favourite Premio Loco, who still has to prove he can handle the step up in trip, although he is a full brother to a mile and a half winner.

With that in mind I’d far rather be taking three times the price about Bronze Cannon. Back him each way at 7/1 with any of Bet 365, Totesport or Coral Bookmakers.

Good luck!
Tom

Quentin’s comeback mission worth an interest‏

There could be a bit of value to be snapped up this afternoon when Charlie Mann’s Quentin D’Ex returns to he track after a 4 month absence following a bitterly disappointing English debut at Market Rasen.

A well backed 11/8 favourite on that occasion he didn’t go an inch, but tried over hurdles now in Lingfield’s 3.55pm race he could be seen in a much better light – a small breathing operation is said to have produced a much happier horse – so put a line through his first effort and back a fresh horse at inflated odds this afternoon.

Currently around 7/1 on the exchanges you can also take a guaranteed 13/2 with Betfred or 6/1 guaranteed with Paddy Power – get on each way.

Sting the bookies with a Lingfield winner!‏

Bee Stinger can build on a promising return to form when 4th over course and distance last time by taking Lingfield’s Colemans Hatch Handicap over 1m 2f at 4.40pm.

Granted they go off at a decent clip he can score off a mark of just 68, that’s 12lbs less than when he last won at Wolverhampton at the end of March.

The application of blinkers seems to have eked some improvment from this seven-year-old son of Almaty, and said by his trainer Ian Wood to be working as well as he can remember, he can score at 7/2 with Betfred, Sportingbet and Stan James.

Big value Saturday Horseracing tips!‏

Shrewd South Devon trainer Liam Corcoran sends his only runner of the day Nothing Is Forever on a 410 mile round trip to contest a 1m 6f handicap at Wolverhampton this afternoon, and the five-year-old is worth an each way interest at 10/1 with both Betfred and Sportingbet.

Having shown a marked improvement since a switch to Corcoran’s Kingsbridge base, including a win over hurdles, he was travelling like a winner quarter of a mile from home at Lingfield last time over 2 miles, and now dropping back in trip he can take a hand in this weak 46-60 rated contest.

He also benefits from an eye-catching jockey booking with Robert Winston taking over steering duties.

Meanwhile over at Lingfield it could pay to have an interest in Charlie Longsdon’s Prairie Spirit in the 1m 2f handicap at 3.35pm.

Very highly touted on the Flat in France he was snapped up by owner Alan Halsall (Haydock Champion Hurdle trial winner Songe runs in the same colours) to go hurding, but having disappointed in that sphere he returns to the level here having had a wind op.

How that’ll improve him remains to be seen but the 40/1 (generally available) about a young horse who bagged middle distance races at the more prestigious tracks for fun in France (most recently Maisons-Laffitte & Longchamp) is the wrong price entirely.

Good luck!
