Cheltenham Festival Countdown: Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

With the Cheltenham Festival fast approaching, Tom is busy fine tuning which selections he will be posting as tips for the various Cheltenham Races which will appear on this site from Monday 15th March, in time for the first day of the 2010 meeting. However, it never ceases to amaze us here at Betting Directory just how hungry people are for the Cheltenham Festival and we are already seeing huge numbers of people searching for tips and advice ahead of the Festival. Over the space of the next week, we are going to providing our readers with a preview to some of the Festival’s more popular races; looking at who the leading contenders are, where the money has been going in the market and unearthing some trends that may point you in the direction of finding that winner that may not have previously been on your shortlist. We’re going to start with the Cheltenham Festival curtain raiser, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

The only guarantee with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is that the start of the race will receive the biggest cheer of the Festival as the tapes go up to signal the start of four days and 26 top class races. However, the betting for the 2010 renewal of the Supreme Novice’s suggests that there is another guarantee in the race, in the form of Dunguib, the long time favourite. The Philip Fenton trained runner has been at the head of the betting for this race since running away to a ten length victory in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival 12 months ago and anybody who took the 6/1 with Boylesports about the Irish Raider winning the Supreme Novices’ immediately after that victory will be clearly identifiable from the size of their smile!

Dunguib’s price has only headed in one direction after each of  his subsequent five wins from five starts and the odds against soon evaporated following his Grade 1 Deloitte Hurlde win at Leopardstown in February. He is now a best price 4/5 with Bet365, Ladbrokes and Sportingbet with other firms as short as 4/6 and could well go off as the shortest priced favourite in this race in ever! Anybody looking for a bigger price and isn’t bothered about waiting 12 months could do worse than back Dunguib to win the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle this year and the Champion Hurdle in 2011 at 8/1 with Bet365, a price that will surely look massive if he does win in the manner many are expecting.

Favourites haven’t  fared too well in this race in recent years, with only four of the last 20 jollies obliging but the question remains have any been as good as Dunguib? His trip over the Irish Sea bodes well though with seven winners in the past nine years trained in Ireland. However, it must be remembered that bar his debut run, this horse has yet to come under pressure and has not been asked any question on a racecourse. This is more than likely because he’s top class and everything points towards him cruising to victory at Prestbury on the 16th March but at the price, many punters will be keen to know what the alternatives have to offer.

The springer in the market has been the Jonjo O’Neil trained runner, Get Me Out of Here, whose odds were slashed from 25/1 into 8/1 following his win in the Totesport Trophy Hurdle at Newbury in February. This unbeaten six year old is clearly a horse on the upgrade and could well pose a big threat to Dunguib if improving again but the fact that this will be his first run at Cheltenham does raise a big question mark to answer.

Oscar Whiskey is another runner with a similar profile to Get Me Out of Here, an unbeaten youngster that has improved with every run. However, he would need to find a big improvement on what he has already shown if he is to win on his first start at Cheltenham and trainer Nicky Henderson may have to wait a little longer for his first win in this race since 1992.

Blackstairmountain looks the pick of the remainding Irish runners and trainer, Willie Mullins, could well throw a spanner in the works of  his fellow countryman, Philip Fenton’s, bid to win this race with Dunguib. Whilst far from consistent in his Bumper runs last season, when he did put his best foot forward, Blackstairmountain won well and the same seems evident this season over Hurdles. His latest outing came at Punchestown in Januray, where at the third time of asking, the penny finally dropped over obstacles and he ran away to an easy victory. If he can replicate that kind of form in the Supreme Novices’ then he stands a chance and is still available at 14/1 with Victor Chandler and Stan James. The other Willie Mullins runner is Flat Out (currently 25/1), who has looked impressive on both his (winning) starts over hurdles and is sure to go on to better things. It will no doubt be the decision of jockey Ruby Walsh of which of this pair he decides to take the mount on which will  determine where the money goes come day one of the Cheltenham Festival but the ultimate question is can Dunguib be beaten?

Khyber can Pass Champion Hurdle test – Cheltenham Antepost Tip

With freezing conditions cutting the sporting calendar to ribbons punters are keeping warm by focusing on the big antepost targets, not least the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle betting, in which it could pay to make an early investment in Khyber Kim to continue his relentless improvement shown in the 2009/10 campaign.

A distant 22nd of 27 in last season’s County Hurdle this isn’t a horse you’d immediately have flagged up as a major player in the two mile hurdling showpiece, but a retun to the track at Prestbury Park in November yielded a facile win in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, as Kyber Kim powered up the hill under a light weight to see off Harry Tricker by a couple of lengths.

Expect a Sunday symphony at Newmarket’s end of term bash – this weekend’s tips‏

It’s very much a case of the best of both world’s this weekend as Newmarket prepare to put on a big show for their Champion Stakes Meeting as the Flat season draws to a close, while at Cheltenham the marmalade and mustard coloured corduroy trouser brigade will be out mob-handed as the National Hunt campaign gathers a healthy head of steam.

There are plenty of heavy hitters on display at both tracks, and we’ll kick off at Cheltenham where Philip Hobbs’ crack hurdler Snap Tie can make the perfect beginning to his chasing career to by taking the WBX.com Novices’ Chase over two miles at 2.55pm on Friday afternoon.

Only five go to post for this £12,000 pot, one of which is stablemate Safari Journey, and although the ground might be a shade quicker than connections would ideally prefer Snap Tie should be able to see off this opposition with a minimum of fuss on the way to sterner tests ahead.

He’s got the ideal physique for the job over the larger obstacles, and distinguished himself last term with a big display in the Christmas Hurdle, alongside tilts at several of the major prizes.

Day 4 Cheltenham Tips – All To Play For!

Surprises a plenty on day three of the Festival as Big Buck’s upset the big two in the World Hurdle and Imperial Commander showed his true colours in the Ryanair to down hot favourite Voy Por Ustedes. The same Big Buck’s who wasn’t even intended to be jumping hurdles this season just a short while ago….

Less surprising was a 577-1 handicap double for Venetia Williams courtesy of Kayf Aramis in the Pertemps and Something Wells in the Festival Plate. We knew she’d come to the party sooner or later, although Davy Russell’s delayed tactics aboard Notable D’Estruval in the Plate left a few observers scratching their heads.

All in all a bookmakers day – two odds jollies turned over to knock the stuffing out of punters, plus a gamble on Poker De Sivola going astray in the Kim Muir.

Still, hope springs eternal, here’s the plan for Gold Cup day:

1.30 – JCB Triumph Hurdle

Walkon can get punters off to a flyer and put a smile back on Choc Thornton’s face after he took a kicking in the Champion Chase. He looked a class act when winning here last time, and chief market rival Zaynar showed all the acceleration of a fridge freezer in a recent piece of work at Kempton Park.

He’ll be better on the day but he’ll have to be at his very best to stop the ultra tough Walkon – 5/1 with Toteport and Paddy Power looks the way to go. Zaynar came out on top last time they met, but Walkon looks primed to reverse that form.

Triumph Hurdle Odds
2.05 – Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle (Handicap)

Dave’s Dream goes in search of the Imperial Cup/Cheltenham £75,000 bonus here, but I fancy Sunnyhillboy to ruin that particular plot – a ready winner at the Open meeting in November he’s been kept fresh for this target since a December victory at Sandown – back him each way at 8/1 (general).

County Hurdle Odds

2.40 – Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Pride Of Dulcote can make his mark here – Alpha Ridge looks likely to make the running and set this up as a match between Cape Tribulation and Pride Of Dulcote. I have to favour Ruby Walsh’s mount on a testing track with the drying ground very much in his favour. The 7/2 with Blue Square and Paddy Power looks reasonable.

Albert Bartlett Hurdle Odds
3.20 – totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup

Kauto? Denman? Neptune? Madison?

Personally I’m Neptune Collonges all the way as he comes with none of the question marks associated with his more illustrious stablemates. This likeable grey continues to improve, was placed in the race last year, and looks sure to give his running.
The 6/1 looks a cracking each way bet with Bet365, Totesport and Victor Chandler.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

4.00 – Christie’s Foxhunter Chase

A contest I’m really looking forward to, with the chance to see Clive Smith’s distinctive colours back in the winner’s enclosure as Royal Auclair takes his chance in the Foxhunters. Now a 12 year old he’s run in all the top races down the years and can still be a force at this level following recent Hunter Chase wins at Sandown and Fontwell.

Back him each way at 10/1 (general)

Foxhunters Chase Odds
4.40 – Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

David Pipe matches Willie Mullins’ feat in the Bumper by saddling eight of the 24 runners in the race named after his father, and he can hit the target with Big Eared Fran, a horse who looked the real deal in winning at Sandown last Saturday. There’s 5/1 available with VCBet, Paddy Power and William Hill.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle
5.15 – Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase (Handicap)

Venetia Williams was firing on all cylinders on Thursday winning with 16/1 Kayf Aramis and 33/1 Something Wells, and she can notch again here with in-form Lorient Express.

The 10 year old is in the form of his life and can trouble the judge at 16/1 each way (general).

Grand Annual Chase Odds

Good luck!

Day Two Cheltenham tips‏ – Irish eyes are smiling

Thought for Tuesday: Hurricane Fly has to be some horse if you stop to consider he had runaway Mares’ Hurdle winner Quevega in rear in a Grade 1 hurdle at Auteuil in June, and then comfortably accounted for Supreme Novices’ winner Go Native by 10 lengths at Leopardstown in December.

Wait for him to reappear at Aintree or Punchestown. It’ll be some show if Tuesday’s Cheltenham results are to be believed!

Looking ahead to Wednesday, here’s the lowdown on the seven race card:

1.30 – National Hunt Cup

Jonjo O’Neill has his string in form at exactly the right moment and can score in the opener with Can’t Buy Time. This progressive looking chaser won with any amount in hand at Sandown last time, and off level weights in this Amateur Riders’ event he can take this for the Jackdaws Castle trainer.

The wise deployment of Wichita Lineman to Tuesday’s William Hill Trophy leaves this at the mercy of his stablemate, and he can take this en-route to a possible tilt at the Grand National. Coral are best price in the village at 11/2.

Latest National Hunt Cup odds

2.05 – Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle

I’m really looking forward to seeing Karabak strutting his stuff on the big stage. He’ll love the step up in trip, won in emphatic style last time out at Ascot, and has recently been paid the compliment of being purchased by JP McManus.

Choc Thorton loses the ride as a result of that deal (McManus’s retained jockey AP McCoy takes over) and Choc’s evident despair at losing the mount suggests he’ll go mighty close, and the popular Thornton has even nominated the six year old as his Festival banker. If you don’t agree watch the tape of him settling the issue at Ascot, he surged clear of some good horses.

There’s still some 7/2 available with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes.

Compare Ballymore Hurdle Odds

2.40 – RSA Chase

A big chance for the Irish horses to shine here, and I’m sweet on the chances of Willie Mullins’ Cooldine.

He looked the real deal in winning the PJ Moriarty Chase at Leopardstown last time, doing a nice favour for readers of this column, and clearly improved for the step up in trip.

The form has been well and truly franked by Moriarty second Forpadydeplasterer emerging to win the Arkle here on Tuesday, and Ruby Walsh chooses him in preference to the quirky What A Friend.

There are no stamina doubts where he is concerned, and he’s a confident selection at 9/2 with Coral.

For anyone looking for a value each way play in the race Casey Jones has to be high on the list – he beat the subsequent Irish Arkle winner Golden Silver at Punchestown in November, then sprang a 25/1 surprise when defeating Trafford Lad over 3m at Leopardstown.

RSA Chase Odds

3.20 – Queen Mother Champion Chase

This should be an exhibition round from undisputed two mile king Master Minded, but take a look at the betting without the favourite markets – both Briareus and Well Chief merit closer attention.

4.00 – Coral Cup

Many more competitive 28 runner handicap hurdles you’d be hard pressed to find, but don’t be afraid to back Michael Hourigan’s bang in form Dancing Tornado to make the frame at a hefty 18/1 with Coral. (who alongside bet365, Boylesports and Paddy Power are paying five places on the race).

In the form of his life at Leopardstown and Ascot the last twice this fella richly deserves to win a big one, and can make a big impact here with a mere 10st 3lb to shoulder.

Regular pilot David Casey is on board, and with the cheekpieces once again in evidence I fancy him to be right in the thick of it.

Coral Cup Odds

4.40 – Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

Nicky Henderson’s French import Miss Sarenne could be the one to side with here.

She would have won with plenty to spare at Plumpton first time up had it not been for an unfortunate skirmish with the final hurdle (the one that denied AP winner no.3000 no less!), and she can gain compensation on a far greater stage tomorrow.

This lovely prospect has been gobbled up by JP McManus since then and turns out in his silks in the Fred Winter, she’ll appreciate better ground and should be backed each way at 8/1 (general), or at 7/1 with bet365 who pay 5 places on the race.

Fred Winter Odds

5.15 – Weatherbys Champion Bumper

Willie Mullins saddles eight of the 24 runners in the bumper, but he could be frustrated by Dermot Weld’s Rite Of Passage, who’s been the subject of some upbeat reports from his great trainer, and has attracted strong support in recent days.

Already a winner at both Galway and Naas, he’s the one to be with in the bumper at 5/1 with Coral and William Hill. Don’t forget the concessions too – bet365, Boylesports and Paddy Power are paying 4 places on the race.

Champion Bumper Odds Comparison

Good luck!

Tips for Day One of the 2009 Cheltenham Festival – Bring it On!

Cheltenham is already alive with the hum of final preparations, the course looks in top nick, the ground is currently Good to Soft on both the new and old courses, and the forecast rain hasn’t yet arrived. Let battle commence!

Tuesday’s tips:

1.30pm – williamhill.com Supreme Novices’ Hurdle - Take a bit of the remaining 6/1 each way with SportingBet about David Pipe’s Torphichen winning the opening race of the Festival.

He was in a class of his own on his latest appearance at Sandown, the form of which has worked out really well.

Lob into the equation his handy 8lb age allowance and you have a decent argument for an investment. I know Pipe is keen on his chances, and don’t forget heavily backed favourite Cousin Vinny endured a rough ferry crossing from Ireland and didn’t eat up when he arrived.

Latest Supreme Novices Hurlde Odds

2.05pm – Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase – Long time favourite Tatenen looks to be the one to take a decidedly average looking renewal of this contest. He’ll appreciate a strong gallop, the lack of which was his undoing when beaten by Follow The Plan at Leopardstown at Christmas time.

He looked excellent when winning here at the Open meeting in November, and has the gears to take this for Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh. The 4/1 with bet365 looks a fair reflection of his chances.

Compare the Latest Arkle Chase Odds

2.40 – William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase – Top weight Star De Mohaison can stamp his class on this race and defy top weight.

The 2006 Royal & SunAlliance Chase winner hasn’t seen much racing since his Festival triumph, restricted by chronic tendon troubles.

However, with those injury worries now firmly in the past the eight year old, who ran his best race for a long time when a narrow second here under a big weight in a competitive December handicap, can make up for lost time.

It was touch and go whether connections launched him into a Gold Cup bid such is the high regard with which he is held, and at 10/1 each way with Boylesports he’s going to be very hard to keep out of the frame.

William Hill Handicap Trophy Odds

3.20 – Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle – With the rain forecast to arrive later this evening and 22 rivals to contend with I’ll happily take a watching brief where hot favourite Binocular is concerned.

Instead sniff out a bit of value and have a look at Ashkazar, currently a whopping 22/1 with VCbet, and last year’s winner Katchit, currently 14/1 (Champion Hurdle Odds Comparison).

Ashkazar ran a cracking trial in the Kingwell and is far too big at his inflated price, while Katchit seems to lit up at the sight of Cheltenham and could be a different horse on Tuesday afternoon.

Both should be backed each way with realistic chances of making the frame, and don’t forget bet365 are paying four places on the race.

4.00 – Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase (Handicap) – The quandry of which Enda Bolger horse to back is a teaser for fans of the Cross Country race, but I’m really keen on the idea of Garde Champetre following up last year’s runaway success.

While this time around he does face the imposte of top weight it didn’t prevent Spot Thedifference from winning this contest in 2005, and with Nina Carberry doing the steering I fancy him to fend off stablemate L’Ami. Get involved at 4/1 with Betfred or Victor Chandler.

Cross Country Hurdle Odds

4.40 – David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle - A race I’m thoroughly looking forward to! All the money in recent days has been for Willie Mullins’ Quevega, seemingly based upon one placed run in a Grade 1 hurdle in France on atrocious ground behind stablemate Hurricane Fly.

She won well enough last time out at Punchestown but didn’t beat much, and she runs into a streetwise opponent in the shape of Lucy Wadham’s United here.

United has some cracking form in the book: a former winner of Punchestown’s Champion Four Year Old hurdle, she also made the frame in the World Hurdle plus the Irish equivalent back in 2007, and has returned from a long absence looking as good as ever with wins at Haydock and Ascot.

The Ascot performance was only workmanlike, but she’ll appreciate a proper gallop and can reward her patient connections with victory on the big stage here.

Donald McCain’s decision to run Whiteoak in the Champion Hurdle has left the door ajar, and at 9/2 with Paddy Power United can take the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle.

David Nicholson Mares Hurdle Odds

Good luck on Day One!

Mighty Man looks worth an interest in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle

Betting Directory’s efforts to pinpoint the antepost value throughout the four days of the Cheltenham Festival leave no stone unturned, and though it may raise a few eyebrows, today’s advice is to take a closer look at a forgotten horse currently working his way back towards full fitness and a tilt at the Ladbrokes World Hurdle – Mighty Man.

Not seen in action since hobbling away from Punchestown’s Champion Stayers’ Hurdle with a tendon injury to his off-fore way back in April 2007, an injury which many presumed would signal the end of his brilliant career, Mighty Man’s recuperation has been a lengthy process, but connections believe he can still be a force at the very highest level, and are keen to have a crack at the staying division’s number one prize on March 12th.

The word from the Shropshire base of trainer Henry Daly is positive, and lest we forget this is a horse who still has time time on his side at the age of nine.

A quick scout back through his form reveals Mighty Man ran third to My Way De Solzen in the 2006 World Hurdle before going on to reverse that from when winning a Grade 2 at Aintree a month later.

In 2007 he all but derailed Inglis Drever’s second World Hurdle success, and then routed the opposition in winning Aintree’s Long Distance Hurdle for the second year running.

High class form that means he demands respect if Daly can bring him back to anything approaching the same level we saw two years ago.

Tempting as it might be we’re happy to ignore the traditonal antepost offering from the major firms, and instead opt for some insurance with a slice of the 25/1 ‘with a run’ available on request. You might not see the price on the web, but just ring up and ask any of the high street operators. That way, you won’t lose a penny if he doesn’t make it back in time.

Star can shine on Cheltenham’s big stage‏

A seven race card from the natural amphitheatre which is Cheltenham is just what the doctor ordered for those of you looking for a weekend punt, and Star de Mohaison can continue his rehabilitation with a win in the Letheby & Christopher Cotswold Chase (2.35pm Saturday).

With his task made considerably easier by the defections of the Queen’s Barbers Shop and Jonjo O’Neill’s Lexus Chase winner Exotic Dancer (both of whom shop elsewhere for a suitable target) Star de Mohaison is taken to get back to winning ways in the hands of crack big-race Pilot Barry Geraghty.

Three years ago the then five-year-old Star de Mohaison embarked on a five race winning spree including victories at Fontwell, his beloved Cheltenham (twice), Aintree (at the April meeting) and Sandown.

Something about Cheltenham seems to bring about the best in Paul Nicholls’ eight-year-old, and his success in the 2006 Royal & SunAlliance Chase was an exhibition in jumping.

Soft ground won’t stop his march back from the injury that then kept him out for an entire two years, and his latest run on yielding ground when trying to give 18lbs to the inspired Mon Mome on the Friday of the Boylesports meeting was a cracker.

Indeed he traded at a far shorter in-running price on the exchanges as the two horses kicked off the bend, and although he narrowly failed to get the best of that scrap, connections were undertandably pleased to have him back in full working order.

Of the opposition Tidal Bay will benefit from a return to a right handed track, but experimenting up in trip could find him out, and I’d have him down as a potential Ryanair Chase type when dropped back in distance.

Halcon Genelardais will be popular too, and looks likely to be favourite since he ran a fine race in a good Gold Cup, and is 4lb clear according to Timeform ratings.

Joe Lively will have his fans too after a clear cut Cheltenham handicap suceess in November (with a light weight he beat Halcon Genelardais 14 lengths), but both could be faced with playing second fiddle to Star de Mohaison.

Time is on his side, and Sir Robert Ogden’s gelding can take this en-route to a tilt at the Cheltenham Gold Cup in which he’d have to be considered a lively outsider at 25/1 with Boylesports, Coral and Sportingbet.

Elsewhere on the card, barring accidents, the Finesse Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle really ought to go the way of Alan King’s Walkon at 3.10pm.

His December Newbury second to current Triumph Hurdle favourite Zaynar looks especially good form when you consider he went down four lengths that day – conceding 7lb for a penalty he picked up for an earlier Huntingdon success.

Zaynar came out and won again at Ascot last weekend to boost the form further.

Next factor in Walkon’s classy success in a Grade 1 run on soft ground at Chepstow at Christmas time, when off a moderate pace his jumping was nigh on impeccable, and he had tomorrow’s rivals Reve De Sivola and Simarian in third and fourth that day.

Furthermore the horse he beat at Chepstow Pepite de Soleil came out and won at Wincanton at the weekend – get stuck in.

Finally have a second look at Moon Over Miami for the Betchronicle Handicap Chase now that he takes the step up in trip to 2m 5f for the first time. (2.05pm).

Charlie Mann’s eight-year-old is a bit of a monkey, and seems to need to be on a going day to put it all together, but he’s got a healthy dose of ability and I’ll be supporting him at what looks likely to be a reasonable each way price. He loves soft ground, and as his name features among the entries for both the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Ryanair, this should give an indication of his likely Festival target.

Expensive to follow in recent times he was well fancied for the Castleford Chase at Wetherby last time, but histrionics down at the start saw him give away ground, and his performance im managing to get up and take second was actually quite impressive.

The declaration Mister McGoldrick keep the weights down and means Moon Over Miami takes his chance with just 10st 10lb to shoulder, and he’s taken to make the frame at the very least at around 10/1.

Good Luck
Tom

Wrap up a couple of winners in time for Christmas!‏

The Channel 4 cameras head for Haydock & Newcastle this weekend, and for those of us braving the betting ring at the former, it should be pretty lively to put it mildly, with all the North West Premiership sides otherwise engaged, meaning thousands of wasted locals in full ‘works-out’ party mood trying to attack us as we cower in the corner.

If you’ve never witnessed two scousers dressed as Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer doing the Scoop6 shuffle in a vain attempt to get on tv, Haydock’s the place to go to break your duck.

Joking apart, the atmosphere will be fantastic, so if you’re sick of Christmas shopping there’s no finer way to spend the first day of the holiday period.

No finer way that is, if you can back a winner or two, and we’ll head to Ascot for the two best bets of the day.

There’s a rumour doing the rounds that Father Christmas wears red & white, but I’ve got a sneaking suspicion he might be wearing green and gold on Saturday as JP McManus holds a massive chance of a big race double at the track.

First up at 1.40pm there’s no way I’m going to desert Nicky Henderson’s Binocular in the re-arranged Boylesports International – I think they’ll be playing for places in behind the selection in a race they’ve moved mountains to have re-scheduled.

Fair play to all involved, not least Ascot racecourse plus both Boylesports and Ladbrokes who’ve worked together to get what looks an unmissable contest back on the calendar following a soggy day at Cheltenham last Saturday.

Already an antepost investment for the Champion Hurdle, Binocular is a name that’s cropped up on plenty of occasions in this column, and the four-year-old can enhance his tall reputation at the expense of stablemate, Chomba Womba and Emma Lavelle’s Crack Away Jack.

Placed in listed company in France and versatile as regards the ground, don’t forget he had Crack Away Jack some six and a half lengths adrift in a Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle over course and distance back in January.

He followed that up by justifying odds-on favouritism in the Adonis at Kempton, before finding only the more physically mature seven-year-old Captain Cee Bee too good in a rare old scrap in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

He then re-emerged in spectacular fashion putting the Triumph Hurdle winner Celestial Halo to the sword with brutal ease at Aintree some three weeks later.

Frustrated by the weather last Saturday his only public appearance so far this season was little more than a schooling exercise against inferior rivals at Haydock on Betfair Chase day.

Connections says he more than ready to rubber stamp his place at the head of the Champion Hurdle betting, so help yourself to a bit of 13/8 with either Boylesports, Betfred or Totesport for this weekend’s assignment.

Little more than an hour later, a maximum field of 21 go to post for a fascinating looking Ladbrokes Hurdle, and it’s another Henderson inmate who’ll be carrying my cash in the shape of Aigle D’Or

Ever since the Greatwood when the Halling gelding put in a massive shift as red hot favourite, shaking up a horse who in retrospect was very well treated on a lenient mark of 124 in the shape of Numide, this race has been the target and I can’t resist a slice of the 11/2 generally available as an each way investment.

A lack of confidence by connections in Ashkazar puts me off the second favourite, and greater dangers may lurk at the bottom of the weights with Philip Hobbs’ duo Belcantista and Prince Taime having scraped into the handicap as numbers 20 and 21.

Belcantista is especially interesting having been 25/1 on Monday, before some bloke called JP McManus decided to buy himself an early Christmas present – no surprise he’s subsequently been the antepost gamble of the week, with the buzz horse now only 6/1 in a place.

That said it’ll have to be a good horse that sees off Aigle D’Or. I don’t take any great pleasure in tipping up two favourites in one column, but I do believe these two have oustanding chances to make it a McManus-Henderson-McCoy Saturday treble.

Good luck!

Saturday’s Racing Tips

1:40 Ascot – Binocular to win – 13/8 at either Boylesports or Betfred

2:45 Ascot – Aigle D’or each way – 11/2 at Totesport

Nothing flat about this weekend’s Betting Tips

Here we go! Strap yourself in: one of the great weekends of the National Hunt season is primed and ready to swing into action, and here’s a few ideas to earn some shillings along the way.

We’ll strike early on Friday with a horse your correspondent has been waiting three months to see in the shape of Alan King’s Mount Helicon, who makes his English debut in Newbury’s 1.00 race the Q Associates Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle.

Thanks to Wikipedia for explaining the three-year-old is named after a Greek mountain – “one celebrated by Hesiod because two springs sacred to the Muses were located here: the Aganippe and the Hippocrene, both of which bear “horse” (ἵππος hippos) in their toponym. In a related myth, the Hippocrene spring was created when the winged horse Pegasus aimed his hoof at a rock, striking it with such force that the spring burst from the spot. On Helicon too was the spring where Narcissus was inspired by his own beauty”.

Anyway, if your punting tastes are more Ouzbeck than ouzo, content yourself with the following information:

A way ahead of tomorrow’s eight rivals on his Flat form when trained in France by the great Andre Fabre no less, he won twice in seven appearances on the level (both at Saint-Cloud), has been placed in a listed race at 1m 7f, and even finished fourth in Longchamp’s Group 2 Prix Noailles (beaten little more than a length).

He goes on a range of ground (he won on good and heavy) and has absolutely no concerns about staying the trip or race fitness according to the moles at Barbury Castle.

If that isn’t enough his stable rave about him, and if his hurdling technique is as good as the work watchers would have you believe, then he’s a penalty kick at Newbury tomorrow.

Inevitably the 33/1 antepost investment we advised about Mount Helicon in the Triumph Hurdle on here some seven weeks ago is long gone (now just 20/1 biggest with Ladbrokes), but row in with a bit of evens for Friday’s debut.

Perhaps he’ll eventually follow in the footsteps of his illustrious stablemate Katchit, winner of both the Triumph and Champion Hurdles, get yourself down to Newbury for a few early clues.

My old mate Lord Culcheth might have had a ruby or two too many of late, but he isn’t the only who’s suggested to me that Saintsaire could be worth a very small each way dabble when Saturday rolls ’round.

The quirky nine-year-old was held in high regard by Paul Nicholls and the team at Ditcheat not that long ago, but he seemed to fall out of love with the game, and ended up running abysmally in an appalling race at Uttoxeter back in April when last seen out.

What’s the attraction I hear you say? Fair question, but have a quick scout through his form figures, and you’ll see the race he contests at 1.35pm at Newbury, the Jim Joel Memorial run as the UK Hygiene Handicap Chase, is the very same one in which he’s bounced back to form with a victory the last two seasons on the spin.

Add to that the chance that a transfer to the immeasurably smaller stable of the capable Alex Hales has worked the oracle, (and the word is he’s trained him specifically for a pop at this race), and you’ll see why I’m prepared to risk a bit of my hard earnt at what looks certain to be a huge each way price.

The arguments will rage long and loud about what’s going to win the Hennessy at 2.40pm, but regular readers of this column will know my antepost voucher is hard coded with the words Character Building, and with 17 declared for the big race I see no reason to change my thinking now.

Racing off a nearly identical mark to when he was third in the race last year, John Quinn’s charge shoulders 10st 6lb, he remains unexposed as a staying chaser, and has the underrated Dougie Costello doing the steering.

He likes the track, is fit and raring to go after a bonus win over hurdles at Towcester, and will relish being back in the rough and tumble of a big field handicap chase. Take a bit of 7/1 each way with Bet365, he’s got a great chance of being in the money again this year.

If the Hennessy isn’t enough to get your pulse racing, then Newcastle’s big card is also live on Channel 4 if you’re sitting at home having a bet or two, and we’ve got a couple of cracking opportunities to back a winner.

Nicky Henderson isn’t exactly lacking for firepower when it comes to the two mile hurdling division, and one of his big guns Punjabi can take the WBX.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle by storm in the hands of Barry Geraghty.

The five-year-old ran some big races in defeat last season; second in the Tote Gold Trophy and third in the Champion Hurdle, but he finally got his name up in lights in Punchestown’s Champion Hurdle in April, before wins on the Flat at Newmarket and Sandown bought him a well deserved pick of grass and the opportunity to put his feet up for a month or two.

Said to have improved again over the summer holidays, he is going to be very hard to beat at Gosforth Park, even with the likes of former Champion Hurdler Sublimity and dual Fighting Fifth winner Harchibald in attendance – The standout quote of 11/8 with Coral reflects that very fact.

He’s going to go off a very warm order favourite, and the Geordies’ll be queueing ’round the block for a slap-up celebratory feast at Yummies takeaway in the Bigg Market if he goes in.

Finally, don’t be afraid to have a few quid on Harmong Brig to win the WBX.com Rehearsal Chase at 3.00pm on the same Newcastle card. His trainer Nicky Richards was already a fan of this race having won it with Direct Access in 2005 before Harmony Brig won it 12 months ago, and the omens are good for a repeat performance.

Just as he did before winning it last season he recently ran well at Cheltenham (6th to Parsons Legacy), and set to carry 10st 4lb, he can take a hand in what doesn’t look the strongest renewal of this valuable race.

Good luck!
Tom
