Punters on the ropes as bookies celebrate – Thursday’s Cheltenham Festival Tips

At the end of day two the bookmakers definitely took a 2-0 lead over punters, leaving them on the ropes and in desperate need for a few winners on the final two days of the 2010 Cheltenham Festival. Tom has got five selections for us on Thursday, which will hopefully help us get us back in the game ahead of the all important final day on Friday.

Thursday’s Cheltenham Festival tips:

1.30 – Jewson Novices’ Novices’ Handicap

Dave’s Dream (each way) @ 12/1 with Paddy Power.

2.40 – Ryanair Chase

Poquelin (win) @ 7/2 with Bet365, Ladbrokes and William Hill.

3.20 – Ladbrokes World Hurdle

Bet 1 – Lie Forrit (each way) @ 50/1 with Bet365.
Bet 2 – Powerstation (both each way) @ 40/1 with Bet365.

4.00 – Byrne Group Plate

Watch My Back (each way) @ 8/1 with Bet365 and Paddy Power.

High Standards at Haydock Park for Fallon’s Return – this weekend’s tips‏

A year ago the heavens opened, and what should have been a day to remember at Haydock Park turned into empty car parks and a sodden track saturated by a constant downpour, a situation that left us with a rather skinny programme for two hours that afternoon!

Now, a shade over 24 hours before Kieren Fallon begins what certain quarters of the press have taken to calling ‘phase two’ of his career, we’re hoping for better luck as the Newton-le-Willows track stages its ever popular Betfred Sprint Cup card.

My suspicion is that Fred, who had the misfortune to employ me for three years, might well be handing over his biggest sponsored prize (apart, of course, from the annual Betfred & Birchwood Shopping Centre Best Dressed Shellsuit Competition) to Fallon a little after 3.30pm, once the former champ has booted home 7/2 (totesport) shot High Standing in the Group 1 Sprint Cup.

Saturday’s Variety Club Day tips for Sandown Park‏

The crowds will be out in force at Sandown tomorrow as the celebs roll up to support Variety Club Day and try and bag a couple of winners in the process.

A tough week on the punting front for yours truly at York would be made a whole lot more palatable with a decent winning Saturday to round it off, and I’ll be putting my faith in Sir Michael Stoute’s Lang Shining (each way) to make an impression in a tricky looking 17 runner 1m 2f handicap at 3.15pm.

He’s a bit of a monkey this old horse, but I backed him off the same mark 12 months ago when he finished second in this very race at 12/1, and with the assessor dropping him a pound back to 98 on a course he enjoys, he looks worthy of a few quid with gallops reports suggesting he’s back to his best.

Unlucky last time out at Glorious Goodwood, he ran really well when fourth the time before that at York, and with a good draw here in stall 15 and Ryan Moore to do the steering, if he chooses to put it in then I reckon the 8/1 currently chalked up with Stan James could be made to look very generous. Back him each way.

Friday’s best bets at Glorious Galway and Goodwood‏

As my old mate John ‘Scouse Lobster’ Cruces (of Betfred and Talksport fame) frequently likes to remind anyone within earshot ‘it’s a marathon, not a sprint’, a point you’d have done well to remind the dishevelled looking masses pouring out of Ballybrit at the end of a riotous Ladies Day last night, but with three days still to go it’s hats off to anyone braving the wind and rain to make it there for Friday’s evening fixture.

The best bet on the card looks to be Paul Flynn’s in-form Drunken Sailor, bidding to record his first win of the season with conditions to suit in the Arthur’s Day Handicap at 6.50pm.

In finishing second to Aidan O’Brien’s current Ebor favourite Changingoftheguard in the Ulster Derby at Down Royal over 1m 5f he posted an eye-catching display and proved his stamina for the trip.

With Padraig Beggy again in the saddle and taking a valuable 3lbs off a similar effort can prove good enough here.

Sandown & Haydock – Eclipse Day Tips – Look for the value in Mirrored‏

Sweltering conditons and the 48 hour declaration of Guineas and Derby hero Sea The Stars means they’ll be packing into Sandown Park on Saturday afternoon for what looks set to be a top notch card at the Esher venue.

Sandown has to be one of my favourite tracks be it on the Flat or over the sticks – you can pretty much guarantee a decent crowd for the better days, the racing tends to be well above average, the facilities are in good nick and the viewing is excellent. That said they do have very excitable car park attendants, but you can’t have it all…..

Check out the latest Betting Offers from leading bookmakers for all this weekend’s Racing Action

Coral sponsor their big day on the level and have cleverly come up with some catchy new race titles for the afternoon’s action; of particular interest is the Coral Challenge Handicap over a mile at 2.40pm.

York and French Oaks the Pick of this weekend’s Racing Tips

With Tom away this week, he has left his weekend column in the trusty hands of Betting Directory tipsters and whilst Mr Lee has been soaking up the sun, we have had our heads in the form book in an attempt to point our loyal readers in the direction of a few winners and continue Tom’s impressive strike rate with a third  winning Saturday on the bounce.

The pick of this weekend’s action comes from York and Sandown, where the Channel 4 cameras will be covering seven races from across both meetings. With Royal Ascot just days away, it certainly isn’t a vintage weekend of Racing action but there are still a couple of good opportunities to get amongst the winners.

Our first tip of the week came on Wednesday in the form of an antepost selection ahead of Royal Ascot which kicks off on Tuesday next week. We have advised that you snap up a bit of the 3/1 about Yeats to win the Ascot Gold Cup on Thrusday. The only bookmaker still offering the 3/1 about the Aidan O’Brien runner, who is bidding for a record fourth successive win in the race is Ladbrokes, and we aren’t expecting the ‘Magic Sign’ to hold that price for too much longer.

Epsom Oaks & Derby Tips – Oxx & Kinane to leave them seeing Stars!‏

Epsom’s world famous Oaks and Derby fixture attracts racegoers of all shapes and sizes, and they’ll be flooding in in their thousands to witness two days of top class racing.

A field of 13 are scheduled go to post for the Investec Derby (3.45pm, Saturday), and I’m very keen on the chances of Guineas winner Sea The Stars becoming the first horse since Nashwan 20 years ago to do the double.

Immediately after his Newmarket success, big race jockey Mick Kinane said he’d be “some spin in the Derby”, and nothing I’ve seen in between times suggests he can’t follow up now he steps up in trip.

This weekend’s best bets from Goodwood and York

A perfect forecast and six meetings across the country mean it’s time to slap on the Hawaiian Tropic and get fired into the best of this weekend’s racing action, and with the Channel 4 Racing cameras stationed at Goodwood, Haydock and York for an 8-race bonanza, there’s punting opportunities a plenty.

Here at picturesque Goodwood it isn’t quite as hot as the 30 degrees we enjoyed in Rome in midweek, but I don’t mind sacrificing a few degrees when there isn’t a knife wielding Italian attempting to stab you in the backside lurking around every corner and behind every building, although the ageing parking attendant wielding a megaphone in the press car park does look pretty menacing in his fluorescent vest.

On a more serious note, the Sussex track should be applauded for their various initiatives in trying to get more people to come racing – it’s a debate inspired by the much discussed ’Ben or Brian’ saga, and one we’ve been chewing over on the Morning Line the last coupe of weeks – and having got more than 9,000 to their new bank holiday fixture last Monday (many of them first time children) Goodwood are doing at least as well as anyone.

Meehan primed for Irish Guineas double – Bank Holiday Weekend Tips‏

The wide open expanse of County Kildare’s famous Curragh racecourse could be humming to a slightly surreal tune this weekend as Manton handler Brian Meehan launches a potent dual attack on the boylesports.com 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas.

While the Irish may be threatening a whitewash in our Derby on June 6th – the graphic on the front page of today’s Racing Post displays the fact they’re responsible for the first six in the betting and nine of the first eleven, while William Hill have slammed the door shut on their market about an Irish-trained winner of the Epsom Classic – Wiltshire based Meehan could be about to exact a bit of Anglophile revenge by walking away with both of their Guineas.

Forget the fact Limerick-born Meehan is as Irish as the Liffey and focus on the great chance awaiting Delegator in the boylesports.com Irish 2,000 Guineas at 3.45pm on Saturday.

Newmarket 2000 Guineas Tips Look Like Great Value

Many of the regular readers and followers of Tom’s Tips on this site will be eagerly anticipating Saturday’s Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket as they clutch their antepost vouchers on the back of Tom’s advice from the last few weeks.

Back in March, Tom advised an each way bet on Mastercraftsman to win the opening Classic of the Flat Season at odds of 7/1, and the Aidan O’Brien runner is now best price 9/2 following good support in the last couple of weeks.

Tom’s other tip for the 2000 Guineas came last month when he advised an each way bet on Delegator at odds of 20/1 on the back of breaking news that the Brian Meehan Colt had produced a great piece of work on the Gallops, news that was confirmed in style when he won the Craven Stakes over Course & Distance a week later. He is now the joint 7/2 to win the race.

Latest 2000 Guineas Odds

Good Luck and enjoy the fantastic weekend of live sport, not forgetting to view some our free bets that can be claimed on all the live action from the Classics at Newmarket to the Hatton fight in Las Vegas!
