2010 Champion Hurdle Preview

The Betting Directory team continues our look at the Cheltenham  Festival as the demand for tips and previews of the key races at the meeting continues to grow with every day! These aren’t tips as they will be coming courtesy of our resident tipster Tom Lee, but merely previews of some of the key trends for the feature races of each day.

The Champion Hurdle is the feature race on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival and is the first of the four Champion Races at the meeting and this year’s race looks as competitive a renewal as there has been for a long time. Co-favourites, Go Native and Solwhit currently head the betting with Ladbrokes offering 4/1 about the pair. And with the next four all chalked up at 8/1 you begin to get an idea of just how tough finding the winner of this race may be!

2010 Champion Hurdle Odds Comparison

Last year’s Supreme Novices’ winner, Go Native, has been the biggest mover in the antepost market throughout the winter after his price has gradually been cut from the 33/1, available before his Fighting Fifth Hurdle victory at Newcastle in November, where he upset the odds to beat several well fancied types and experienced two mile hurlders. He confirmed that form by landing the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton, a result which saw him become genuine contender for the Champion Hurdle, contesting favouritism ever since. However, the trend that all of the last 15 Champion Hurlde winners had run in the same calendar year of their victory does go against Noel Meade’s runner whose last run was in December.

Solwhit however has run in 2010, landing the Irish Champion Hurdle in Januray.  A repeat of that performance would surely make him very difficult to beat at Cheltenham providing he is unaffected by his first run on foreign soil since he was brought over to Ireland from France in 2007.

If you are a follower of trends, it may pay to side with one of the Irish duo at the head of the bookmakers lists given that 7 of the last 11 winners of this race were trained in Ireland. However, it is also useful to note that sixteen of the last 21 winners came from the top six in the betting, so you cannot rule out the English trained quartette who all sit as 8/1 co-second favourites with Ladbrokes.

Nicky Henderson trains two of those four in the form of Punjabi and Zaynar, with the latter being the long time favourite for the Champion Hurlde before a disappointing defeat when going  off 1/14 in his prep run at Kelso in February. That defeat saw the 2009 Triumph Hurdle winner drift in the market and bring to an end his fine run of wins. The soft ground and a slowly run race at Kelso could be the reason for Zaynar’s latest defeat and whilst he’ll have to make a return to winning ways on the biggest stage of all, he cannot be written off. Punjabi has also disappointed on a couple of occasions this season but like his stablemate, cannot be written off; especially given he won this race twleve months ago and will look to join Hardy Eustace and the great istabraq as recent back to back winners of the Champion Hurdle.

Medermit, who represents the Alan King stable, beat Punjabi on his last run and connections are hopeful that he can bring an end to three narrow defeats at Cheltenham and win the race for the second time in two years for his trainer (who won with Katchit in 2007). One horse Medermit must reverse Cheltenham form with if he is to win the Champion Hurdle is Khyber Kim, whose last two runs (and wins) have been at the Prestbury Park track. The Nigel Twiston-Davies runner hasn’t been the most consistent of horses but his two runs this season put him right in the mix and despite not being seen since early December, is sure to make his presence felt and was the antepost pick of our resident tipster, Tom Lee, back in Januray – Read why Tom thinks Khyber Kim can win the 2010 Champion Hurlde.

All change in the Champion Hurdle picture – Saturday’s tips

Despite the winners continuing to flow like molten lava it’s been a vexing week for Nicky Henderson and his team after seeing Binocular ruled out of the Champion Hurdle due to a muscle problem, before leading light Zaynar lost his unbeaten record over hurdles to our old friend Quwetwo in Kelso’s Morebattle Hurdle.

I wouldn’t rule Zaynar out of the Festival equation just yet given that the sticky ground at the borders track wouldn’t have done him any favours, but he certainly didn’t hurdle with his usual zest despite the frantic urgings of Barry Geraghty.

The firms made their intentions clear by pushing Zaynar out to as big as 8/1 for the Champion, and that looks a fair price to me since I reckon the big one will fall to either Go Native or Khyber Kim.

That said, surely all is not lost! Henderson still has the 2009 Champion Hurdle winner up his sleeve, with Punjabi set to tackle Wincanton’s Bathwick Tyres Kingwell Hurdle at 3.50pm on Saturday afternoon.

Well, it might be actually, as the horse who hasn’t got his head in front in three attempts since his big day at Cheltenham last March might have to settle for second best once again, with Alan Fleming’s leading light Starluck lining up as a potential fly in the ointment.

This shootout may well come down to which of the pair handles the heavy underfoot conditions best, and although Punjabi took a Fighting Fifth on genuine soft ground, his two runs this season have suggested a better surface would see him to better effect.

He faded quickly on him comeback effort in the International, and then couldn’t find any answer to the challenge laid down by Medermit in Haydock’s Champion Hurdle trial at the end of last month.

With Felix de Giles riding him for only the second time (the pair were second in the 2008 Tote Gold Trophy won by Wingman) he faces no easy task in trying to concede 4lbs to a rival rated on 3lbs inferior on official figures, and who it strikes might cope equally well with really gruelling conditions.

Starluck looked better than ever when coasting to victory on his seasonal reappearance at Cheltenham in October.

He then led everywhere bar on the line when second to Mr Thriller on soft ground at Haydock, and next up posted a brilliant effort when second to Go Native in the Christmas Hurdle.

He only failed there by a short head, and a reproduction of that effort after a nice break will be enough to win this.

There are question marks about frost and waterlogging pretty much everywhere you go this weekend, and up at Haydock my good mate Lord Culcheth is keeping a 24 hour vigil on the BBC weather website hoping their top quality card is going to escape the forecast frost.

If it does you can be sure he’ll be parading up and down the champagne bar in his Tesco machine washable suit trying to impress any cougars in the vicinity, frothing at the mouth after a carefully plotted assault on an unsuspecting estate agent went west earlier in the week.

He may be able to placate himself at least partially though by backing Russian Flag in Ascot’s 4.20pm, but only if Uttoxeter is off as the seven year old is doubly declared with a preferred and tougher looking assignment at the Staffordshire track.

Only six are scheduled to go to post for the 2m 1f Ascot race, and if he does appear there I think he’ll take all the beating given his consistent recent record and the fact he gets in at the bottom of the weights.

Never out of the first two in five starts this season he can benefit from his usual hold up tactics to come fast and late and beat this inconsistent bunch in the hands of conditional Alex Merriam.

If Uttoxeter does survive then have a few quid each way on Alex Hales’s Roseneath in the three mile handicap chase at 3.30pm.

I was at Huntingdon a few weeks ago when he jumped a fence in public for the first time, winning under a canny ride from Noel Fehily.

This six year old Saddlers’ Hall gelding out of a Mandalus mare was very moderate as a hurdler, but he might have a sliver of ability over the larger obstacles, and can build on that promising beginning in a weak race.

Good luck!

Saturday’s tips:

3.30 Uttoxeter – Bet Totepool At totesport.com Handicap Chase – 9 Roseneath (each way)

3.50 Wincanton – Bathwick Tyres Kingwell Hurdle – 2 Starluck (win)

4.20 Ascot – Trisoft Handicap Chase – 6 Russian Flag (win)

Raise the White Flag in Ascot’s Mares’ Hurdle for pick of this Weekend’s tips

The show is well and truly back on the road and isn’t life better for it?

Punters have finally got some proper winter sport to get their teeth into, Lord Culcheth has mysteriously disappeared to Berlin pursuing some hairy German cougar, the excellent Timmy Murphy has his thousand winners plaudits safely in the bag courtesy of a Taunton double, Cheltenham is just six and half weeks away, and a hero of Cheltenham’s past bounced back to remind us of former glories as 2006 Gold Cup winner War Of Attrition took the Galmoy Hurlde in some style at Gowran Park on Thursday.

Looking ahead to this weekend Jump racing afficionados will be licking their lips in the style of Preston carpet baron Bernard Dorsett (fans of cult C4 show Come Dine With Me will know exactly who I’m referring to), and understandably so.

In the Grade 2 Mares’ Hurlde over 3m at Ascot tomorrow afternoon I fully expect Donald McCain’s Whiteoak to stamp her class on proceedings after proving beyond doubt she stays the trip when hacking up at Kempton in November.

She does have to concede 5lb all round here, but I just cannot see that being a barrier to her getting her nose back in front.

Khyber can Pass Champion Hurdle test – Cheltenham Antepost Tip

With freezing conditions cutting the sporting calendar to ribbons punters are keeping warm by focusing on the big antepost targets, not least the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle betting, in which it could pay to make an early investment in Khyber Kim to continue his relentless improvement shown in the 2009/10 campaign.

A distant 22nd of 27 in last season’s County Hurdle this isn’t a horse you’d immediately have flagged up as a major player in the two mile hurdling showpiece, but a retun to the track at Prestbury Park in November yielded a facile win in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, as Kyber Kim powered up the hill under a light weight to see off Harry Tricker by a couple of lengths.

Pipe’s Magnificent Seven the weekend tip as he eyes Cheltenham bonus‏

Sandown’s the place to be on Saturday afternoon when one of my favourite races on the entire calendar forms the main attraction on a decent card, and it could be more of the same from star West Country trainer David Pipe.

The winner of the Imperial Cup (now sponsored by Paddy Power) earns a whopping £75,000 bonus from the sponsors if they go on to win any race at the Cheltenham Festival, a feat pulled off by Pipe Junior two years ago when Gaspara won at Sandown and then netted the Fred Winter.

He nearly did the trick again 12 months ago too with the brilliant Ashkazar foiled only by a very good horse in Crack Away Jack as he too made an assault on the Fred Winter. (n.b. don’t be afraid to back Ashkazar at 22/1 each way for next week’s Champion Hurdle, it’s a massive price)

The Pipe family have won the Imperial Cup an eye-watering eight times in the last 20 years, and on three occasions they’ve managed to net the bonus (Olympian 93 & Blowing Wind in 98 are the others), so there’s every reason to believe he’ll be up to his old tricks again.

This year he fields two, with hot favourite Mr Thriller currently an 11/4 shot with every firm in the village after facile wins at Bangor and Fontwell.

The form of those wins has been well advertised, but as a result he races off a mark of 145 carrying 11st 6lb.

More alarmingly he has only run on testing ground thus far, and with no rain around over the next couple of days and Sandown only currently Good to Soft, Good in places, this’ll be by far the quickest ground he has encountered.

At the 5/1 available when they priced the race up at the start of the week I’d have happily taken the risk, but since there’s another Pipe runner available at more than three times the price, I’ll happily take a watching brief with Mr Thriller if we can make the frame at a decent each way price.

Therefore the horse carrying my cash at 9/1 each way with Coral will be bottom weight Seven Is My Number – he’ll have no issues with the ground and badly needs a penalty to get into the weights for his various possible Festival assignments next week.

Not seen for a year since he overcame Paul Nicholl’s Woolcombe Folly (Woolcombe Folly went on to win five times thereafter) over hurdles at Taunton in February ‘08, he has won after a long absence before and could be very well handicapped.

Lightly raced, he has the assistance of the excellent Timmy Murphy to do the steering, and could get loose with a mere 10st 3lb on his back.

With the Festival looming he could be a handy source of funds for the battle ahead!

Good luck!

Saturday tip:
Seven Is My Number (each way) @ 9/1 (Coral)

Three Good Tips For Saturday’s Sandown Card

I’ll be down at Sandown on Saturday where Optimus Maximus looks highly likely to get favourite backers off to a flying start in the Toteplacepot Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at 1.30pm.

Bred to be a star over hurdles (he’s a half-brother to a couple of horses you’ll remember: Paul Nicholls’ very useful Albuhera, plus Irish and French Guineas winner Bachir) Nicky Henderson’s charge cost an eye-watering €825,000 when snapped up by current connections, and duly obliged at the first time of asking when readily drawing away from a good field in an above-average contest at Newbury a fortnight ago.

There’s still a bit of work to do to redeem his price tag, but Newbury was a start, and at current exchange rates there’s only about another €822,000 to go.

Tomorrow’s price won’t be anything to write home about, but he’s definite banker material for multiples fans, since soft ground holds no fears and he hurdled like a natural at Newbury.

No bigger than 33/1 for the Triumph Hurdle he can enhance his reputation with a cosy success here.

The second race on the card should also go the way of favourite backers with 2008 Triumph Hurdle winner Celestial Halo set to advertise his Champion Hurdle claims in the Totepool Contenders Hurdle at 2.05pm.

He made a very pleasing return at Ascot last time in the re-arranged Boylesports International, running into the roadblock which is Binocular, but nonetheless performing with distinction in having to make the running, and then finishing well clear of Chomba Womba, Katchit and Crack Away Jack.

Saturday’s opposition is nothing like as formidable, with Osana likely to need the run, and Afsoun just short of the class necessary to compete at the very highest level.

They race for a tasty first prize of £31,310 in the Totesport.com Masters Handicap Chase at 3.45pm, and I’ll be having a couple of quid on a young horse on the upgrade in the shape of Jonjo O’Neill’s Can’t Buy Time, who’s definitely one to keep on the right side of.

Creeping up the weights after wins at Southwell, Huntingdon and Ascot, he posted a sound effort in finishing a close third in the Haydock’s Tommy Whittle Chase just before Christmas, and getting in with a handy 10st and the very capable Richie McLernon’s claim a further boost, he’ll be a danger to all on ground he’ll love.

The one to fear could be Nicky Richards’ According To John, off the track for 14 months, but third to Denman in the 2007 SunAlliance. According to connections he’ll need the run but with high-class form in the book he could be one to watch.

Lastly I had to laugh at the tv coverage of Wigan v Liverpool on Wednesday night, and it’s hats off to whoever chooses the music at the JJB Stadium……new signing Mido slots in the penalty to make it 1-1, cue a bit of music to mark the occasion, what do they play? Walk like an Egyptian. Brilliant! Whoever is responsible deserves a pay-rise. Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan is sure to be reading this so take note. The sight of thousands of pie-eating Wiganers doing the accompanying dance moves is a sight to behold.

Good luck!
Tom

Wrap up a couple of winners in time for Christmas!‏

The Channel 4 cameras head for Haydock & Newcastle this weekend, and for those of us braving the betting ring at the former, it should be pretty lively to put it mildly, with all the North West Premiership sides otherwise engaged, meaning thousands of wasted locals in full ‘works-out’ party mood trying to attack us as we cower in the corner.

If you’ve never witnessed two scousers dressed as Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer doing the Scoop6 shuffle in a vain attempt to get on tv, Haydock’s the place to go to break your duck.

Joking apart, the atmosphere will be fantastic, so if you’re sick of Christmas shopping there’s no finer way to spend the first day of the holiday period.

No finer way that is, if you can back a winner or two, and we’ll head to Ascot for the two best bets of the day.

There’s a rumour doing the rounds that Father Christmas wears red & white, but I’ve got a sneaking suspicion he might be wearing green and gold on Saturday as JP McManus holds a massive chance of a big race double at the track.

First up at 1.40pm there’s no way I’m going to desert Nicky Henderson’s Binocular in the re-arranged Boylesports International – I think they’ll be playing for places in behind the selection in a race they’ve moved mountains to have re-scheduled.

Fair play to all involved, not least Ascot racecourse plus both Boylesports and Ladbrokes who’ve worked together to get what looks an unmissable contest back on the calendar following a soggy day at Cheltenham last Saturday.

Already an antepost investment for the Champion Hurdle, Binocular is a name that’s cropped up on plenty of occasions in this column, and the four-year-old can enhance his tall reputation at the expense of stablemate, Chomba Womba and Emma Lavelle’s Crack Away Jack.

Placed in listed company in France and versatile as regards the ground, don’t forget he had Crack Away Jack some six and a half lengths adrift in a Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle over course and distance back in January.

He followed that up by justifying odds-on favouritism in the Adonis at Kempton, before finding only the more physically mature seven-year-old Captain Cee Bee too good in a rare old scrap in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

He then re-emerged in spectacular fashion putting the Triumph Hurdle winner Celestial Halo to the sword with brutal ease at Aintree some three weeks later.

Frustrated by the weather last Saturday his only public appearance so far this season was little more than a schooling exercise against inferior rivals at Haydock on Betfair Chase day.

Connections says he more than ready to rubber stamp his place at the head of the Champion Hurdle betting, so help yourself to a bit of 13/8 with either Boylesports, Betfred or Totesport for this weekend’s assignment.

Little more than an hour later, a maximum field of 21 go to post for a fascinating looking Ladbrokes Hurdle, and it’s another Henderson inmate who’ll be carrying my cash in the shape of Aigle D’Or

Ever since the Greatwood when the Halling gelding put in a massive shift as red hot favourite, shaking up a horse who in retrospect was very well treated on a lenient mark of 124 in the shape of Numide, this race has been the target and I can’t resist a slice of the 11/2 generally available as an each way investment.

A lack of confidence by connections in Ashkazar puts me off the second favourite, and greater dangers may lurk at the bottom of the weights with Philip Hobbs’ duo Belcantista and Prince Taime having scraped into the handicap as numbers 20 and 21.

Belcantista is especially interesting having been 25/1 on Monday, before some bloke called JP McManus decided to buy himself an early Christmas present – no surprise he’s subsequently been the antepost gamble of the week, with the buzz horse now only 6/1 in a place.

That said it’ll have to be a good horse that sees off Aigle D’Or. I don’t take any great pleasure in tipping up two favourites in one column, but I do believe these two have oustanding chances to make it a McManus-Henderson-McCoy Saturday treble.

Good luck!

Saturday’s Racing Tips

1:40 Ascot – Binocular to win – 13/8 at either Boylesports or Betfred

2:45 Ascot – Aigle D’or each way – 11/2 at Totesport

Jump To It For A Profitable Weekend

While I’ll be enjoying the end of season party atmosphere on Town Moor – some 200 miles south west a key fixture in the National Hunt calendar will be cranking up at Wincanton.

I love a good day out at the Somerset venue, a proper old-fashioned galloping track with big stiff fences and a clued-up crowd who know their racing. That and the sight of numerous pairs of red and custard cords being proudly sported by the local fashionistas.

Just five go to post for a valuable pot at 2.50pm for the Totetentofollow Elite Hurdle, and I’m keen to take on the Champion Hurdler Katchit, who has a stiff task trying to concede a stone and more to some useful rivals.

Perhaps the ground was a little quicker than he’d have preferred when beaten by Snap Tie at Kempton last time, and he’s sure to improve for his first outing of the new season, but he’ll have to be right at the top of his game to get the better of some of these, including Paul Nicholls’ promising French recruit Takeroc, who finished second to Border Castle in Ayr’s Scottish Champion Hurdle when last seen back in April.

Takeroc may be seen to even better effect when allowed to concentrate solely on his chasing career, and I’m going to by-pass him in favour of having a couple of quid one of my favourite horses in training, popular dual-purpose campaigner Blythe Knight.

Nicely weighted, fit from the Flat, he has no problems regarding ground or trip, and trainer John Quinn and jockey Dougie Costello teamed up to win this in 2006 with 9/2 shot Crow Wood. I won’t be going all out, as despite the small field it’s a race to savour, but at around 7/1 with the bookmaker Paddy Power he can spring a minor surprise here, and add to a career tally which already includes big race hurdling success at Aintree, plus on the level a win and a second in the Lincoln, a key listed race at Chester, plus successive victories in Epsom’s Diomed Stakes.

The next race on the card is the Badger Ales Trophy Handicap Chase at 3.25pm, a race in which there are question marks about plenty of the main protagonists.

Once again I’m keen to take on the favourite, which looks likely to be Paul Nicholls’ Leading Attraction; this is only the seven-year-olds fifth racecourse appearance, and he’s going to need all Ruby Walsh’s experience to guide him around these challenging fences if his jumping at Taunton back in April is anything to go by.

With that in mind, I’m happy to look to the bottom of the weights and a young horse with a big future; Tom George’s Island Flyer.

At likely odds of 11/2 with Ladbrokes he’s a progressive type, unbeaten over fences, and a danger to all off his light weight. A former Irish point-to-point winner, he can continue to improve after his summer break, and with Paddy Brennan continuing the partnership he can maintain his winning sequence.

Finally, there’s also a decent card at Sandown, and word reaches me that Alan King’s new boy Bensalem is considered way above average, and can take a hand in the concluding bumper at 4.05pm.

Tom’s Wincanton & Sandown Tips

  • 2:50 Wincanton (Saturday) Blythe Knight to win @ best morning price
  • 3:25 Wincanton (Saturday) Island Flyer to win @ best morning price
  • 4:05 Sandown (Saturday) Bensalem to win @ best morning price

Money to be made on Cheltenham Contenders at Aintree

It might five months away, but for a couple of horses prominenet in antepost lists, the road to Cheltenham starts at Aintree tomorrow, and with the big battalions heading for the North West, I’m looking forward to seeing Tatenen make a much-anticipated chasing debut in the Intercasino.co.uk Molyneux Novices’ Chase at 1.35pm.

Long talked about by Paul Nicholls as his possible 2009 Cheltenham Festival Arkle Chase horse, this sturdy classic jumping type gets a handy four-year-old allowance in a field of just five.

He was deliberately put away with the 08/09 campaign in mind after Festival trials day back in January, and can put his rivals to the sword at the first time of asking over the larger obstacles.

His price won’t be anything to write home about, but the 16/1 Arkle quote with Coral could look generous come Saturday night.

On Sunday it’s the turn of another star Ditcheat resident to strut his stuff as Pierrot Lunaire launches his campaign in the Intercasino.co.uk Four Year Old Hurdle at 2.40pm.

They way he routed a decent field over course and distance in the Class 1 Littlewoods Direct Imagine Appeal Top Novices’ Hurdle back in April was especially impressive, and the fast, flat, left-handed track suits him to a tee.

This race looks a two horse race on paper, and although Squadron has the benefit of a recent run (behind current Champion Hurdle 3rd favourite Crack Away Jack at Chepstow), plus being burdened with 4lb less than his rival after winning a Class 2 at Cheltenham in April, he wasted valuable ground by jumping to his right last time out, and may again run into one too good in Pierrot Lunaire.

A word of caution though for anyone considering snaffling a bit of the 14/1 with VCBet for the Champion Hurdle – all his best form has come on flat tracks, and others make more appeal in the current antepost list.

Weekend Bets

Saturday 25th October
Tatenen 1:35 Aintree

Sunday 26th October
Pierrot Lunaire 2:40 Aintree

Antepost Bet
Tatenen in the Arkle 16/1 with Coral.co.uk
