York and French Oaks the Pick of this weekend’s Racing Tips

With Tom away this week, he has left his weekend column in the trusty hands of Betting Directory tipsters and whilst Mr Lee has been soaking up the sun, we have had our heads in the form book in an attempt to point our loyal readers in the direction of a few winners and continue Tom’s impressive strike rate with a third  winning Saturday on the bounce.

The pick of this weekend’s action comes from York and Sandown, where the Channel 4 cameras will be covering seven races from across both meetings. With Royal Ascot just days away, it certainly isn’t a vintage weekend of Racing action but there are still a couple of good opportunities to get amongst the winners.

Our first tip of the week came on Wednesday in the form of an antepost selection ahead of Royal Ascot which kicks off on Tuesday next week. We have advised that you snap up a bit of the 3/1 about Yeats to win the Ascot Gold Cup on Thrusday. The only bookmaker still offering the 3/1 about the Aidan O’Brien runner, who is bidding for a record fourth successive win in the race is Ladbrokes, and we aren’t expecting the ‘Magic Sign’ to hold that price for too much longer.

Yeats is the tip for the Ascot Gold Cup

Tom is on holiday this week, so he has left his column in the trusty hands of the Betting Directory editorial team! Despite him sunning himslef in warmer climates, he has still found time to pick up the phone and point us in the direction of some value about potential winner – in the form of Yeats to win next week’s Ascot Gold Cup at an attractive price of 3/1, a price generally available with most bookmakers.

The Aidan O’Brien trained Yeats will be bidding for his fourth successive Ascot Gold Cup victory when he lines up for next Thursday’s Group One, 2 mile 4 furlong trip around the Berkshire track. Should he win, he will become the first horse ever to win the race four times and currently shares the record of three back to back victories with the great French horse of the 70s, Sagaro.

His first win in the race came back in 2006 when he won at odds of 7/1, when he proved that he loves  every yard of this marathon trip and he followed up in 2007 and 2008 at odds of 8/13 and 11/8 respictively, with last year’s win being the most decisive with a winning margin of five lengths back to Geordieland in second place.

Epsom Oaks & Derby Tips – Oxx & Kinane to leave them seeing Stars!‏

Epsom’s world famous Oaks and Derby fixture attracts racegoers of all shapes and sizes, and they’ll be flooding in in their thousands to witness two days of top class racing.

A field of 13 are scheduled go to post for the Investec Derby (3.45pm, Saturday), and I’m very keen on the chances of Guineas winner Sea The Stars becoming the first horse since Nashwan 20 years ago to do the double.

Immediately after his Newmarket success, big race jockey Mick Kinane said he’d be “some spin in the Derby”, and nothing I’ve seen in between times suggests he can’t follow up now he steps up in trip.

Newmarket 2000 Guineas Tips Look Like Great Value

Many of the regular readers and followers of Tom’s Tips on this site will be eagerly anticipating Saturday’s Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket as they clutch their antepost vouchers on the back of Tom’s advice from the last few weeks.

Back in March, Tom advised an each way bet on Mastercraftsman to win the opening Classic of the Flat Season at odds of 7/1, and the Aidan O’Brien runner is now best price 9/2 following good support in the last couple of weeks.

Tom’s other tip for the 2000 Guineas came last month when he advised an each way bet on Delegator at odds of 20/1 on the back of breaking news that the Brian Meehan Colt had produced a great piece of work on the Gallops, news that was confirmed in style when he won the Craven Stakes over Course & Distance a week later. He is now the joint 7/2 to win the race.

Latest 2000 Guineas Odds

Good Luck and enjoy the fantastic weekend of live sport, not forgetting to view some our free bets that can be claimed on all the live action from the Classics at Newmarket to the Hatton fight in Las Vegas!

Fairyhouse top of the tree for this weekend’s Horse Racing tips‏

The crowds will be packing into Fairyhouse for three great days racing from Sunday until Tuesday, and there are solid grounds for believing the giant Trafford Lad can scale new heights in what has been an excellent introductory season in the chasing ranks by taking the Powers Gold Cup at the County Meath track (Sunday 3.45pm).

Dusty Sheehy’s seven year old Tragic Role gelding was a more than decent hurdler finishing third at the Cheltenham Festival in the ‘Ballymore’, plus third in Punchestown’s Grade 1 Champion Novice Hurdle when sent off favourite.

He made a smooth transition to fences in the Autumn, racking up three wins on the bounce, culminating in a five and a half length course and distance victory against no less than Arkle winner Forpadydeplasterer in the Drinmore. That display marked him down as the leading middle distance novice that side of Christmas.

He then suffered a minor blip when turned over by half a length by out and out stayer Casey Jones (my idea of a decent each way bet for Monday’s Irish National provided the rain stays away) at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting, but that was over 3m, and it seems fair to suggest 2m 4f is his optimum trip at this stage of his career.

Next up Sheehy sent him to Leopardstown for the PJ Moriarty, and although his effort flattened out between the last two fences it shouldn’t be forgotten who he finished third behind: subsequent runaway RSA Chase winner Cooldine, plus old adversary Forpadydeplasterer. A case of the form not so much being franked as force fed into the thoughts of any punter who witnessed the relevant races.

It then came to light that a poor scope and a training hold up owing to a stone bruise might have contributed to what was already a notable piece of form – with a perfect prep which he’s enjoyed this time around on the menu he might well have finished at least second.

Trafford Lad is versatile as regards the like good or yielding surface, and has the excellent Tom Doyle on board. Plenty of observers wondered aloud what on earth he was up to when he decided to quit England and return home a couple of years ago, but a steady flow of winners and associations with an array of the best Irish stables have more than justified the €29.99 Ryanair fare.

The decision not to go to Cheltenham has given his trainer plenty of time to prepare for this, and the presence in the field of some useful rivals notably the unbeaten Joncol and Irish Arkle winer Golden Silver mean he’ll go off a working price.

Lastly, wait and see what the notoriously bad Irish weather has in store before having a bet on the Irish Grand National (Monday 3.55pm).

I reckon Noel Meade has a decent chance of netting some prize money with the nicely weighted Casey Jones as long as it doesn’t turn into a quagmire.

He ran well at Cheltenham when a staying on 5th in the RSA Chase, stays longer than the mother-in-law, and may need this marathon 3m 5f test to be seen to best effect. Have an each way interest at 14/1 with Paddy Power.

Good luck!

Weekend tips:

Trafford Lad (win), Powers Gold Cup, 3.45 Fairyhouse Sunday

Casey Jones (each way) 14/1 (PaddyPower), Powers Whiskey Irish Grand National, 3.55 Fairyhouse Monday

Royal Ascot Betting Tips

Over the last few years there has been a significant increase in the number of runners at Royal Ascot. This increase has made this meeting harder to find winners. The field sizes are larger and the races more competitive and speed rating compilers find it hard to separate their top rated selections. Nonetheless we have put together some facts that will be helpful.

If the meeting is so hard for finding winners then we would not expect many favourites to win. Although favourites here only win 27% of the time they have actually made a small profit of 2%. Second favourites have done even better.

Whilst it would be impressive to find a big outside winner the chances of you picking one are remote. Outsiders account for 43% of the total number of runners, yet only 2% of them win. Also horses that are turned out quickly within 7 days do really badly at Royal Ascot races and have a strike rate of only 3%. These are ones to avoid at all costs.

In essence there is a good case for betting favourites at this meeting, but probably a stronger argument is to back second favourites. Outsiders are not generally good best; sure there will be a few but remember there will also be about 200 of them running. It is the weight of money that determines the horse racing odds but it is possible to make money betting on the favourites. If you had bet the favourite in every race over the past 8 years you would have only had three winning years but would have made a slight profit overall. The best statistic for favourite backers is to bet on three year old only races where favourites have a 46% strike rate.

Trainers to follow closely at Royal Ascot are Aiden O’Brien, Mark Johnston, Henry Cecil, Sir Michael Stoute and Saeed Bin Surror. Best jockeys of recent times have been Johnny Murtagh, Frankie Dettori, Ryan Moore and Jamie Spencer.
