All change in the Champion Hurdle picture – Saturday’s tips

Despite the winners continuing to flow like molten lava it’s been a vexing week for Nicky Henderson and his team after seeing Binocular ruled out of the Champion Hurdle due to a muscle problem, before leading light Zaynar lost his unbeaten record over hurdles to our old friend Quwetwo in Kelso’s Morebattle Hurdle.

I wouldn’t rule Zaynar out of the Festival equation just yet given that the sticky ground at the borders track wouldn’t have done him any favours, but he certainly didn’t hurdle with his usual zest despite the frantic urgings of Barry Geraghty.

The firms made their intentions clear by pushing Zaynar out to as big as 8/1 for the Champion, and that looks a fair price to me since I reckon the big one will fall to either Go Native or Khyber Kim.

That said, surely all is not lost! Henderson still has the 2009 Champion Hurdle winner up his sleeve, with Punjabi set to tackle Wincanton’s Bathwick Tyres Kingwell Hurdle at 3.50pm on Saturday afternoon.

Well, it might be actually, as the horse who hasn’t got his head in front in three attempts since his big day at Cheltenham last March might have to settle for second best once again, with Alan Fleming’s leading light Starluck lining up as a potential fly in the ointment.

This shootout may well come down to which of the pair handles the heavy underfoot conditions best, and although Punjabi took a Fighting Fifth on genuine soft ground, his two runs this season have suggested a better surface would see him to better effect.

He faded quickly on him comeback effort in the International, and then couldn’t find any answer to the challenge laid down by Medermit in Haydock’s Champion Hurdle trial at the end of last month.

With Felix de Giles riding him for only the second time (the pair were second in the 2008 Tote Gold Trophy won by Wingman) he faces no easy task in trying to concede 4lbs to a rival rated on 3lbs inferior on official figures, and who it strikes might cope equally well with really gruelling conditions.

Starluck looked better than ever when coasting to victory on his seasonal reappearance at Cheltenham in October.

He then led everywhere bar on the line when second to Mr Thriller on soft ground at Haydock, and next up posted a brilliant effort when second to Go Native in the Christmas Hurdle.

He only failed there by a short head, and a reproduction of that effort after a nice break will be enough to win this.

There are question marks about frost and waterlogging pretty much everywhere you go this weekend, and up at Haydock my good mate Lord Culcheth is keeping a 24 hour vigil on the BBC weather website hoping their top quality card is going to escape the forecast frost.

If it does you can be sure he’ll be parading up and down the champagne bar in his Tesco machine washable suit trying to impress any cougars in the vicinity, frothing at the mouth after a carefully plotted assault on an unsuspecting estate agent went west earlier in the week.

He may be able to placate himself at least partially though by backing Russian Flag in Ascot’s 4.20pm, but only if Uttoxeter is off as the seven year old is doubly declared with a preferred and tougher looking assignment at the Staffordshire track.

Only six are scheduled to go to post for the 2m 1f Ascot race, and if he does appear there I think he’ll take all the beating given his consistent recent record and the fact he gets in at the bottom of the weights.

Never out of the first two in five starts this season he can benefit from his usual hold up tactics to come fast and late and beat this inconsistent bunch in the hands of conditional Alex Merriam.

If Uttoxeter does survive then have a few quid each way on Alex Hales’s Roseneath in the three mile handicap chase at 3.30pm.

I was at Huntingdon a few weeks ago when he jumped a fence in public for the first time, winning under a canny ride from Noel Fehily.

This six year old Saddlers’ Hall gelding out of a Mandalus mare was very moderate as a hurdler, but he might have a sliver of ability over the larger obstacles, and can build on that promising beginning in a weak race.

Good luck!

Saturday’s tips:

3.30 Uttoxeter – Bet Totepool At totesport.com Handicap Chase – 9 Roseneath (each way)

3.50 Wincanton – Bathwick Tyres Kingwell Hurdle – 2 Starluck (win)

4.20 Ascot – Trisoft Handicap Chase – 6 Russian Flag (win)

What a Weekend in store at Newbury – tips available now

Denman is red hot favourite for the Hennessy but I'm opposing him!

Denman is red hot favourite for the Hennessy but I'm opposing him!

A nigh on perfect weekend of sport lies in wait for armchair punters, with two fantastic days racing at Newbury, Newcastle’s Fighting Fifth, a typically strong Hatton’s Grace card at Fairyhouse, plus a mid-table scouse derby, the pivotal top of the table Arsenal v Chelsea game and the small matter of ‘el derbi superclasico’ over in Spain.

I can just picture my great mate Lord Culcheth parked on the sofa glugging his Liebfraumilch from a pint glass, Betfair fired up on his laptop, the 42 inch stolen plasma screen belting out Sky Sports or some obscure hooky Greek satellite channel, mobile at the ready, smug grin on his face as he snuggles up to some leathery old cougar he met while prowling the coat queue or the burger van at 4am that morning, dreaming of a trip to Andalucia with the profits of his punting.

Tips for Day One of the 2009 Cheltenham Festival – Bring it On!

Cheltenham is already alive with the hum of final preparations, the course looks in top nick, the ground is currently Good to Soft on both the new and old courses, and the forecast rain hasn’t yet arrived. Let battle commence!

Tuesday’s tips:

1.30pm – williamhill.com Supreme Novices’ Hurdle - Take a bit of the remaining 6/1 each way with SportingBet about David Pipe’s Torphichen winning the opening race of the Festival.

He was in a class of his own on his latest appearance at Sandown, the form of which has worked out really well.

Lob into the equation his handy 8lb age allowance and you have a decent argument for an investment. I know Pipe is keen on his chances, and don’t forget heavily backed favourite Cousin Vinny endured a rough ferry crossing from Ireland and didn’t eat up when he arrived.

Latest Supreme Novices Hurlde Odds

2.05pm – Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase – Long time favourite Tatenen looks to be the one to take a decidedly average looking renewal of this contest. He’ll appreciate a strong gallop, the lack of which was his undoing when beaten by Follow The Plan at Leopardstown at Christmas time.

He looked excellent when winning here at the Open meeting in November, and has the gears to take this for Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh. The 4/1 with bet365 looks a fair reflection of his chances.

Compare the Latest Arkle Chase Odds

2.40 – William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase – Top weight Star De Mohaison can stamp his class on this race and defy top weight.

The 2006 Royal & SunAlliance Chase winner hasn’t seen much racing since his Festival triumph, restricted by chronic tendon troubles.

However, with those injury worries now firmly in the past the eight year old, who ran his best race for a long time when a narrow second here under a big weight in a competitive December handicap, can make up for lost time.

It was touch and go whether connections launched him into a Gold Cup bid such is the high regard with which he is held, and at 10/1 each way with Boylesports he’s going to be very hard to keep out of the frame.

William Hill Handicap Trophy Odds

3.20 – Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle – With the rain forecast to arrive later this evening and 22 rivals to contend with I’ll happily take a watching brief where hot favourite Binocular is concerned.

Instead sniff out a bit of value and have a look at Ashkazar, currently a whopping 22/1 with VCbet, and last year’s winner Katchit, currently 14/1 (Champion Hurdle Odds Comparison).

Ashkazar ran a cracking trial in the Kingwell and is far too big at his inflated price, while Katchit seems to lit up at the sight of Cheltenham and could be a different horse on Tuesday afternoon.

Both should be backed each way with realistic chances of making the frame, and don’t forget bet365 are paying four places on the race.

4.00 – Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase (Handicap) – The quandry of which Enda Bolger horse to back is a teaser for fans of the Cross Country race, but I’m really keen on the idea of Garde Champetre following up last year’s runaway success.

While this time around he does face the imposte of top weight it didn’t prevent Spot Thedifference from winning this contest in 2005, and with Nina Carberry doing the steering I fancy him to fend off stablemate L’Ami. Get involved at 4/1 with Betfred or Victor Chandler.

Cross Country Hurdle Odds

4.40 – David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle - A race I’m thoroughly looking forward to! All the money in recent days has been for Willie Mullins’ Quevega, seemingly based upon one placed run in a Grade 1 hurdle in France on atrocious ground behind stablemate Hurricane Fly.

She won well enough last time out at Punchestown but didn’t beat much, and she runs into a streetwise opponent in the shape of Lucy Wadham’s United here.

United has some cracking form in the book: a former winner of Punchestown’s Champion Four Year Old hurdle, she also made the frame in the World Hurdle plus the Irish equivalent back in 2007, and has returned from a long absence looking as good as ever with wins at Haydock and Ascot.

The Ascot performance was only workmanlike, but she’ll appreciate a proper gallop and can reward her patient connections with victory on the big stage here.

Donald McCain’s decision to run Whiteoak in the Champion Hurdle has left the door ajar, and at 9/2 with Paddy Power United can take the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle.

Good luck on Day One!

Three Good Tips For Saturday’s Sandown Card

I’ll be down at Sandown on Saturday where Optimus Maximus looks highly likely to get favourite backers off to a flying start in the Toteplacepot Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at 1.30pm.

Bred to be a star over hurdles (he’s a half-brother to a couple of horses you’ll remember: Paul Nicholls’ very useful Albuhera, plus Irish and French Guineas winner Bachir) Nicky Henderson’s charge cost an eye-watering €825,000 when snapped up by current connections, and duly obliged at the first time of asking when readily drawing away from a good field in an above-average contest at Newbury a fortnight ago.

There’s still a bit of work to do to redeem his price tag, but Newbury was a start, and at current exchange rates there’s only about another €822,000 to go.

Tomorrow’s price won’t be anything to write home about, but he’s definite banker material for multiples fans, since soft ground holds no fears and he hurdled like a natural at Newbury.

No bigger than 33/1 for the Triumph Hurdle he can enhance his reputation with a cosy success here.

The second race on the card should also go the way of favourite backers with 2008 Triumph Hurdle winner Celestial Halo set to advertise his Champion Hurdle claims in the Totepool Contenders Hurdle at 2.05pm.

He made a very pleasing return at Ascot last time in the re-arranged Boylesports International, running into the roadblock which is Binocular, but nonetheless performing with distinction in having to make the running, and then finishing well clear of Chomba Womba, Katchit and Crack Away Jack.

Saturday’s opposition is nothing like as formidable, with Osana likely to need the run, and Afsoun just short of the class necessary to compete at the very highest level.

They race for a tasty first prize of £31,310 in the Totesport.com Masters Handicap Chase at 3.45pm, and I’ll be having a couple of quid on a young horse on the upgrade in the shape of Jonjo O’Neill’s Can’t Buy Time, who’s definitely one to keep on the right side of.

Creeping up the weights after wins at Southwell, Huntingdon and Ascot, he posted a sound effort in finishing a close third in the Haydock’s Tommy Whittle Chase just before Christmas, and getting in with a handy 10st and the very capable Richie McLernon’s claim a further boost, he’ll be a danger to all on ground he’ll love.

The one to fear could be Nicky Richards’ According To John, off the track for 14 months, but third to Denman in the 2007 SunAlliance. According to connections he’ll need the run but with high-class form in the book he could be one to watch.

Lastly I had to laugh at the tv coverage of Wigan v Liverpool on Wednesday night, and it’s hats off to whoever chooses the music at the JJB Stadium……new signing Mido slots in the penalty to make it 1-1, cue a bit of music to mark the occasion, what do they play? Walk like an Egyptian. Brilliant! Whoever is responsible deserves a pay-rise. Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan is sure to be reading this so take note. The sight of thousands of pie-eating Wiganers doing the accompanying dance moves is a sight to behold.

Good luck!

Boxing Day and Christmas Racing Tips

Hot on the heels of Binocular’s Christmas spectacular at Ascot on Saturday the bookmakers were busily talking up his chances as a Champion Hurdle certainty, and with Cheltenham still three months away his current general price of 6/4 is short enough (7/4 biggest with Boylesports), but isn’t it great to have another potential superstar on the scene?

Nicky Henderson’s four-year-old put the issue to bed in a matter of strides on Saturday, and with AP McCoy never having to go for his stick you get the impression there was plenty left in the tank against proper opposition. Brilliant.

What’s even more remarkable is that Binocular might face his biggest challenge for hurdling’s greatest prize from a horse who stands in the same yard – Punjabi. You could say Henderson isn’t so much facing an embarrassment of riches in this department as wallowing in them.

The classy five-year-old is the pick of the field for Boxing Day’s Christmas Hurdle at Kempton Park (2.05pm), and I’ll be happily snapping up the 13/8 with Boylesports.

He has some vital experience under his belt having almost taken the Totesport Trophy under top weight, run a six length third to Katchit in last year’s Champion Hurdle, before heading on for the Punchestown equivalent where he scored a cosy three length victory over former champion Sublimity.

More evidence came on the Flat at Sandown and Newmarket; back to back wins on the level understandably earning a summer holiday after a fruitful campaign.

With the Henderson team in such extraordinary form he was a confident selection to take the re-arranged Fighting Fifth at Wetherby a couple of weeks back, and he duly delivered in a good heat with Sublimity, despite having to knuckle down in workmanlike fashion on ground that wouldn’t have been ideal.

Snap Tie and Pierrot Lunaire can give him most to do, but Punjabi is a confident selection to take the Christmas Hurdle honours.

Anyone heading down to Kempton will be in for a treat, with the King George VI Chase just 35 minutes later the star attraction at the Sunbury track (2.40pm).

While I’m more than happy to take a relatively short price about Punjabi there’s no way I’ll be getting involved with Kauto Star at 6/4, despite reports he’s in good nick as he attempts to land the race for the third year running.

French bred horses don’t always train on into the later stages of their careers, while Kauto’s shown an alarming tendency to race lazily in his races.

Defeats at Cheltenham, Aintree and Haydock add fuel to the argument he’s not the force of old, and while master trainer Paul Nicholls is adamant any talk of the dying of the light is in his words ‘bollocks’, I’m still happy to shop elsewhere for a selection in the race.

Argumants still rage on about whether or not he would have won the Betfair Chase had Sam Thomas not been unseated – I’m far from convinced.

His short odds mean there’s a value to be had elsewhere in the field, and there’s some decent opposition to choose from.

Let’s face it – if Kauto Star runs anywhere near his best he wins with ease, and he destroyed them 12 months ago, but keep your fingers crossed for a masterclass from one of jumping racing’s true stars safe in the knowledge that if he is to be beaten you’ll trouser enough folding stuff to buy up the entire contents of the Argos warehouse in Croydon in the January sales.

What’s more, by finishing second or third him at the right price, you’ll still walk away with a tidy profit. Therefore the answer to the King George puzzle could be an each way bet on Our Vic at 11/1(Sportingbet).

Making his seasonal reappearance David Pipe’s 10-year-old has a cracking record fresh, and while it can be argued that he faces a near statistical impossibility since no horse has won the King George on their first run of the season for 20 years, records are their to be broken and he has the class to carry him into the reckoning against a mixed bunch.

Imperial Commander is a handicapper stepping up massively in class, Voy Por Ustedes is short enough at 7/2, while the jury is still out on comeback horse War Of Attrition as he steps back up to three miles.

Our Vic meanwhile has been trained specifically for this contest, finshed second in the race 12 months ago in a creditable display, ran second to Knowhere in the Letheby & Christopher, excelled in winning the Ryanair, and then crucially lowered Kauto Star’s colours in an Aintree thriller in the Betfair Bowl off level weights. The blinkers David Pipe fitted for his last two runs eked out a vast improvement.

I can’t see the price lasting too long – snap it up while it’s still there.

Less than 24 hours later all eyes will be on Chepstow for the Coral Welsh National, a race in which I expect Irish raider Notre Pere to make a splash at 12/1each way with Paddy Power.

Trainer Jim Dreaper is bullish about his prospects.

The seven-year-old stays longer than the mother in law and enjoyed big race success in Navan’s Troytown Chase five weeks ago. As long as Halcon Genelardais runs to keep the weights down he has strong place claims in the Christmas marathon.

Have a great Christmas and Good luck!

Wrap up a couple of winners in time for Christmas!‏

The Channel 4 cameras head for Haydock & Newcastle this weekend, and for those of us braving the betting ring at the former, it should be pretty lively to put it mildly, with all the North West Premiership sides otherwise engaged, meaning thousands of wasted locals in full ‘works-out’ party mood trying to attack us as we cower in the corner.

If you’ve never witnessed two scousers dressed as Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer doing the Scoop6 shuffle in a vain attempt to get on tv, Haydock’s the place to go to break your duck.

Joking apart, the atmosphere will be fantastic, so if you’re sick of Christmas shopping there’s no finer way to spend the first day of the holiday period.

No finer way that is, if you can back a winner or two, and we’ll head to Ascot for the two best bets of the day.

There’s a rumour doing the rounds that Father Christmas wears red & white, but I’ve got a sneaking suspicion he might be wearing green and gold on Saturday as JP McManus holds a massive chance of a big race double at the track.

First up at 1.40pm there’s no way I’m going to desert Nicky Henderson’s Binocular in the re-arranged Boylesports International – I think they’ll be playing for places in behind the selection in a race they’ve moved mountains to have re-scheduled.

Fair play to all involved, not least Ascot racecourse plus both Boylesports and Ladbrokes who’ve worked together to get what looks an unmissable contest back on the calendar following a soggy day at Cheltenham last Saturday.

Already an antepost investment for the Champion Hurdle, Binocular is a name that’s cropped up on plenty of occasions in this column, and the four-year-old can enhance his tall reputation at the expense of stablemate, Chomba Womba and Emma Lavelle’s Crack Away Jack.

Placed in listed company in France and versatile as regards the ground, don’t forget he had Crack Away Jack some six and a half lengths adrift in a Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle over course and distance back in January.

He followed that up by justifying odds-on favouritism in the Adonis at Kempton, before finding only the more physically mature seven-year-old Captain Cee Bee too good in a rare old scrap in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

He then re-emerged in spectacular fashion putting the Triumph Hurdle winner Celestial Halo to the sword with brutal ease at Aintree some three weeks later.

Frustrated by the weather last Saturday his only public appearance so far this season was little more than a schooling exercise against inferior rivals at Haydock on Betfair Chase day.

Connections says he more than ready to rubber stamp his place at the head of the Champion Hurdle betting, so help yourself to a bit of 13/8 with either Boylesports, Betfred or Totesport for this weekend’s assignment.

Little more than an hour later, a maximum field of 21 go to post for a fascinating looking Ladbrokes Hurdle, and it’s another Henderson inmate who’ll be carrying my cash in the shape of Aigle D’Or

Ever since the Greatwood when the Halling gelding put in a massive shift as red hot favourite, shaking up a horse who in retrospect was very well treated on a lenient mark of 124 in the shape of Numide, this race has been the target and I can’t resist a slice of the 11/2 generally available as an each way investment.

A lack of confidence by connections in Ashkazar puts me off the second favourite, and greater dangers may lurk at the bottom of the weights with Philip Hobbs’ duo Belcantista and Prince Taime having scraped into the handicap as numbers 20 and 21.

Belcantista is especially interesting having been 25/1 on Monday, before some bloke called JP McManus decided to buy himself an early Christmas present – no surprise he’s subsequently been the antepost gamble of the week, with the buzz horse now only 6/1 in a place.

That said it’ll have to be a good horse that sees off Aigle D’Or. I don’t take any great pleasure in tipping up two favourites in one column, but I do believe these two have oustanding chances to make it a McManus-Henderson-McCoy Saturday treble.

Good luck!

All Aboard for Cheltenham, Navan and Sha Tin‏ Tips

All roads lead to Cheltenham this Friday & Saturday for yours truly, and there’s opportunities a plenty on what looks a cracking card:

Friday’s best bet comes in the Boylepoker.com H’Cap Chase (1.55pm) as Character Building returns to fences in a fascinating looking contest which features 2006 SunAlliance winner Star De Mohaison, this year’s National winner Comply Or Die, plus a host of quality horses.

We missed out on Hennessy Day when Character Building pulled out of his stable lame at breakfast time and failed to make the trip south, and judging by the disappointment in trainer John Quinn’s voice when he broke the news, he was expected to run a mighty race.

Now though, two weeks on, set to carry just 10st 9lb, he’s fit and well and ready to do himself justice at a decent price in his first run over the larger obstacles since finishing third to Denman in the 2007 Hennessy, so get on each way.

Also on Friday – the Cheltenham regulars love the intricacies of the Cross Country course, and the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase over 3m 7f (1.20pm) is always worth an interest.

Garde Champetre was second in the equivalent race at the November meeting, and could very well go one better with Nina Carberry in the plate, but he has to shoulder 11st 12lb, and with his odds likely to be prohibitively short in the circumstances I prefer to look down the weights for something far less exposed.

The one that appeals to me is Tawnies, who’ll be any price you like with the bookmakers, but is sent over by Thomas O’Leary with a genuine each way chance.

At the time of writing the Cross Country track is heavy in places, and this fella wants mud up to his neck.

He’s unlikely to be found lacking for stamina, and made a fair impression when fourth to Drombeag at Punchestown on his first attempt at a banks course. Factor in that he sneaks in off a true weight of 10st, and you have a fair case for a small each way bet.

Saturday’s card is where I’ll be looking to do some real damage, and in the shape of Binocular we’ve got the horse to form the cornerstone of many a multiple bet in the Boylesports International (3.05pm).

Punters’ll be rowing in with Nicky Henderson’s Champion Hurdle jolly (7/2 best at the time of writing), and with good reason. They absolutely rave about this animal at Seven Barrows.

Beaten only once since joining team Henderson (by Captain Cee Bee when second in the Supreme Novice), the four-year-old made a decent return to the track when winning an egg and spoon contest at long odds on, and at 6/4 (general) he can rubber stamp his Championship claims at the expense of Crack Away Jack, Katchit and Chomba Womba.

Earlier in the day the superstar that took the old Bula Hurdle three years in succession in 1997, ’98 & ‘99, is commemorated in the Relkeel Hurdle at 1.20pm, a race which should go the way of another Henderson inmate Punchestowns.

The way he came readily clear when winning over 2m 5f under top weight on the Sunday of the Open Meeting in an intermediate hurdle means he is entitled to continue his progress here, and with the stable in such sparkling form he’s tough to oppose.

Starluck is already at least joint favourite in all but one firm’s list for the Triumph Hurdle, and he should be supported to continue his winning streak in the Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at 12.15pm. His 18 length Fakenham romp was especially taking last time out.

To the delight of each way backers a quality field of 16 poll up for the Boylesports.com Gold Cup at 2.30pm, and I’m sweet on the chances of Finger Onthe Pulse making an impact with AP McCoy booked to do the steering.

The seven-year-old won the Jewson over a similar trip at the Festival, clearly relishes the track, and ran second to Noland at Down Royal last month, form that has been neatly franked by Noland Grade 1 win at Punchestown on Tuesday.

Plenty of pundits are understandably making a strong case for clear favourite Imperial Commander, but at 15/8 I prefer to look elsewhere since trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies’s horses are 1/26 in the last fortnight.

Instead snap up a slice of the 8/1 each way with William Hill, and hope trainer Tom Taaffe can secure the same prize his Dad Pat won as a jockey on Flyingbolt in 1965. It’s probably also worth knowing the sponsor’s have decent money back concession, if your selection finishes second you’ll get your money back.

Sunday’s action takes us far and wide, from the rural charm of County Meath to the urban delights of Sha Tin, and these horses should keep you glued to the action:

I was at Navan a fortnight ago to see Pandorama stroll enjoy little more than a canter around Navan’s scenic undulations, and Noel Meade’s son of Flemensfirth should step up to Grade 1 level with the minimum of fuss in the Barry & Sandra Kelly Memorial Novices’ Hurdle (1.20pm).

He faces a maximum of three opponents, including stablemate Donnas Palm (2nd to Hurricane Fly in the Royal Bond), and with the best experience of any of these it should be a bloodless task.

Sadly I won’t be at Sha Tin on Sunday, but fotunately Mike de Kock will, and his Eagle Mountain can finally land the Group 1 success he so richly deserves in the Hong Kong Cup. If any one horse deserves a Group 1 success it’s Eagle Mountain - he has Derby 2nd, a Champion Stakes 2nd and a Breeders’ Cup Turf second on his CV, and crucially is still on the upgrade.

Said to have acclimatized well since his time Stateside his jockey Kevin Shea is sweet on his chances, and he can deny home-team favourite Viva Pataca and land us a handsome return at 5/2 (general).

The locals could be in for more bad news in the Group 1 Sprint where Marchand D’Or can get the better of Apache Cat – take the 11/4 with Victor Chandler or Blue Square and watch Marchand D’Or prove he’s not just the best in Europe, but top of the pile worldwide.

Good luck!

Spoilt For Choice if Betting this Weekend

There’s top notch National Hunt action wherever you look this weekend, and here’s a handful of horses who can pay for their way:

They’ll be going loco for Mad Max in the opener at Ascot tomorrow, and with good reason.

This giant six-year-old son of Kayf Tara (twice a winner of the Ascot Gold Cup – so no stamina worries) will ultimately be a big noise in the staying chase ranks, but don’t miss his hurdling debut at 12.55pm (Friday) in the Nicholas Cunningham Memorial “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle, a great starting point for a horse who demolished the opposiiton when last seen in public in a Newbury bumper in February.

To say this lad is highly regarded is something of an understatement, and with the Henderson yard in electric form, expect a command performance from Mad Max. Those in the know at Seven Barrows say he hurdles like a natural – get on.

One horse who did hurdle like a natural was Victor Dartnall’s Lodge Lane, and there’s genuine excitement about his first try over the larger obstacles in the Devon County Show Exeter Novices’ Chase at 1.40pm (Friday).

He’s got loads of scope, and the way he tackled his hurdles firmly suggests he’ll be an even better chaser, although it’s worth bearing in mind he did reach the lofty perch of 147 last season.

A winner over 2m 3f in soft ground he loves at Exeter last season, he also won at Fontwell, and although he disappointed in the Albert Bartlett at the Festival (his blood was later found to be wrong), he bounced back to see off a very handy type in the shape of Tazbar at Perth in April.

The seven-year-old is the apple of his trainer’s eye, with Dartnall quoted this week as saying: “Lodge Lane has the potential to go even higher now he goes chasing. He has schooled very well and is an exciting prospect”.

I’d make the trip up Haldon Hill just to see him alone, but the presence of Jonjo O’Neill’s winning chaser and 156 rated hurdler Wichita Lineman in opposition means we’ll get a workable price about Lodge Lane.

You’re spoilt for choice on Saturday, but make sure you don’t forget to back another Nicky Henderson in-mate Binocular in Haydock’s Betfair Hurdle at 1.40pm on Saturday.

Nothing short of brilliant in four racecourse outings last season, the only horse to lower his colours was Captain Cee Bee when he still emerged with huge credit as runner up in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

His final performance, slamming the Triumph winner Celestial Halo by seven lengths at Aintree, made plenty of people sit up and take notice. Rightly so.

He has youth on his side, great technique, and in a race restricted to four-year-olds has to be the nap bet of the weekend. While you’re at it, if you haven’t already, snaffle a bit of 11/2 with Coral for the Champion Hurdle at next year’s Cheltenham Festival. He’ll be shorter on Sunday morning.

Don’t forget this column’s antepost portfolio already contains Tatenen at 16/1 for the Arkle, Mount Helicon at 33/1 for the Triumph and Character Building at 8/1 for Hennessy Gold Cup.

Last up, don’t get in my way on the M42 on the way to Birmingham airport on Saturday night, it’ll be a close run thing making the flight to Dublin, but all being well I’ll be present and correct at Navan on Sunday to see Paul Nicholls try and continue his winning streak across the Irish sea in Navan’s Troytown Chase (2.30pm).

Officier de Reserve carries English hopes in the Irish feature, and at 5/1 he rates a sound each way investment with bet365.

He proved his well being with a win over hurdles at Warwick at the beginning of the month, a performance which proves his summer wind op did the trick.

Soft ground and three miles are the perfect combination, and if you can forgive the fact he jumped like a diseased goat in the Kim Muir, he makes plenty of appeal. What’s more, the booking of Davy Russell to do the steering should help immeasurably.

Good luck!
Tom
