Epsom Oaks & Derby Tips – Oxx & Kinane to leave them seeing Stars!‏

Epsom’s world famous Oaks and Derby fixture attracts racegoers of all shapes and sizes, and they’ll be flooding in in their thousands to witness two days of top class racing.

A field of 13 are scheduled go to post for the Investec Derby (3.45pm, Saturday), and I’m very keen on the chances of Guineas winner Sea The Stars becoming the first horse since Nashwan 20 years ago to do the double.

Immediately after his Newmarket success, big race jockey Mick Kinane said he’d be “some spin in the Derby”, and nothing I’ve seen in between times suggests he can’t follow up now he steps up in trip.

Here Come the Girls! (For this weekend’s tips)

It’s a fair bet that plenty of the boozed up patrons staggering out of a brilliant three day Chester May Meeting won’t be making it much further than the adjacent ancient city walls, but fingers crossed that won’t apply to too many of the Channel 4 Racing team who’ll be hot-footing it in the direction of Gatwick Airport and more specifically, Lingfield Park, for Saturday’s Oaks and Derby Trials at the Surrey venue.

A few names spring to mind of great horses who’ve completed the Lingfield/Epsom colts double, not least High Rise in 1998 (aren’t winning bets always memorable?!), although Teenoso, Slip Anchor and Kahyasi also won the Lingfield Trial before winning the big one.

That said, I’ll be waiting ’til 3.45pm for a bet and the Group 3 totesportbingo.com Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes over 7f for which 10 go to post.

Barry Hills’ is having a week to remember after Ghanaati’s 1,000 Guineas triumph and Daraahem’s success in the Chester Cup, and the veteran trainer could be about to make a return visit to the winner’s podium courtesy of a success for game four year old Royal Applause filly Royal Confidence.

I’m not convinced how much winning this race is going to take, and while previous Group race winner Chantilly Tiffany is sure to attract plenty of interest, I liked the way Royal Confidence beat her at Doncaster’s Leger meeting in September, and fancy her to get her measure once again.

A seven furlong specialist, she was only beaten two and a half lengths in last year’s Guineas, and with Hill’s string in flying she can arrive fast and late to take this en-route to a likely tilt at Royal Ascot’s Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes.

Up the M1 at Nottingham I’ll also be investing a few shillings in another filly – snappy dresser Alan Berry’s Look Busy, who lines up in the Listed totesport.com Kilvington Fillies’ Stakes at 3.30pm.

Berry hasn’t changed his stinking blue puffa jacket since about 1987, and neither had Look Busy changed her coat when seeing off Crimson Fern in her recent winning seasonal re-appearance. She should improve markedly for that.

Tough as old boots she notched her seventh win inside a year at Bath over 5f just eleven days ago, and now stepping up to 6f Berry wants to take this before trying to land Haydock Park’s valuable Temple Stakes on May 23rd. Don’t be surprised if she heads to the ‘dock with another win under her belt.

Good luck!

Weekend tips:

2 Look Busy (win) 3.30 Nottingham (Saturday)

4 Royal Confidence (win) 3.45 Lingfield (Saturday)

Midweek Bluesq Betting Tips

After a great result for the mighty Brewers last night in front of the Setanta cameras , I’m looking for Kidderminster (11/8 with Bluesq) to assist us further in our promotion bid by taking all 3 points in their home tie against our  closest rivals Histon .

Kiddy will be hoping to get back to winning ways after a recent dip in form, and with the fire power they have on show I expect them to be among the goals tonight.

Back Kidderminster in a double along with Torquay who should be too strong for lowly Lewes. A £20 double pays £71.40 with Bluesq.
Those who followed my long shot on Saturday were rewarded with a tasty 3-1 when Oxford turned over Crawley.

Saley’s long shot for tonight is on the shoulders of Forest Green (19/10 Bluesq) who I’m hoping to come out on top of a relegation battle against Salisbury

Good luck

Mark Sale

Star can shine on Cheltenham’s big stage‏

A seven race card from the natural amphitheatre which is Cheltenham is just what the doctor ordered for those of you looking for a weekend punt, and Star de Mohaison can continue his rehabilitation with a win in the Letheby & Christopher Cotswold Chase (2.35pm Saturday).

With his task made considerably easier by the defections of the Queen’s Barbers Shop and Jonjo O’Neill’s Lexus Chase winner Exotic Dancer (both of whom shop elsewhere for a suitable target) Star de Mohaison is taken to get back to winning ways in the hands of crack big-race Pilot Barry Geraghty.

Three years ago the then five-year-old Star de Mohaison embarked on a five race winning spree including victories at Fontwell, his beloved Cheltenham (twice), Aintree (at the April meeting) and Sandown.

Something about Cheltenham seems to bring about the best in Paul Nicholls’ eight-year-old, and his success in the 2006 Royal & SunAlliance Chase was an exhibition in jumping.

Soft ground won’t stop his march back from the injury that then kept him out for an entire two years, and his latest run on yielding ground when trying to give 18lbs to the inspired Mon Mome on the Friday of the Boylesports meeting was a cracker.

Indeed he traded at a far shorter in-running price on the exchanges as the two horses kicked off the bend, and although he narrowly failed to get the best of that scrap, connections were undertandably pleased to have him back in full working order.

Of the opposition Tidal Bay will benefit from a return to a right handed track, but experimenting up in trip could find him out, and I’d have him down as a potential Ryanair Chase type when dropped back in distance.

Halcon Genelardais will be popular too, and looks likely to be favourite since he ran a fine race in a good Gold Cup, and is 4lb clear according to Timeform ratings.

Joe Lively will have his fans too after a clear cut Cheltenham handicap suceess in November (with a light weight he beat Halcon Genelardais 14 lengths), but both could be faced with playing second fiddle to Star de Mohaison.

Time is on his side, and Sir Robert Ogden’s gelding can take this en-route to a tilt at the Cheltenham Gold Cup in which he’d have to be considered a lively outsider at 25/1 with Boylesports, Coral and Sportingbet.

Elsewhere on the card, barring accidents, the Finesse Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle really ought to go the way of Alan King’s Walkon at 3.10pm.

His December Newbury second to current Triumph Hurdle favourite Zaynar looks especially good form when you consider he went down four lengths that day – conceding 7lb for a penalty he picked up for an earlier Huntingdon success.

Zaynar came out and won again at Ascot last weekend to boost the form further.

Next factor in Walkon’s classy success in a Grade 1 run on soft ground at Chepstow at Christmas time, when off a moderate pace his jumping was nigh on impeccable, and he had tomorrow’s rivals Reve De Sivola and Simarian in third and fourth that day.

Furthermore the horse he beat at Chepstow Pepite de Soleil came out and won at Wincanton at the weekend – get stuck in.

Finally have a second look at Moon Over Miami for the Betchronicle Handicap Chase now that he takes the step up in trip to 2m 5f for the first time. (2.05pm).

Charlie Mann’s eight-year-old is a bit of a monkey, and seems to need to be on a going day to put it all together, but he’s got a healthy dose of ability and I’ll be supporting him at what looks likely to be a reasonable each way price. He loves soft ground, and as his name features among the entries for both the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Ryanair, this should give an indication of his likely Festival target.

Expensive to follow in recent times he was well fancied for the Castleford Chase at Wetherby last time, but histrionics down at the start saw him give away ground, and his performance im managing to get up and take second was actually quite impressive.

The declaration Mister McGoldrick keep the weights down and means Moon Over Miami takes his chance with just 10st 10lb to shoulder, and he’s taken to make the frame at the very least at around 10/1.

Good Luck
Tom

Look to Ascot for Winning Tips this Weekend

You know things can’t be too bad when staring at you from the box directly ahead is Gold Cup winner Denman, to the left is runaway Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Master Minded, and to the right is treble King George winner Kauto Star.

That was the sight that confronted us early this morning when we paid a visit to the Ditcheat, base of Champion trainer Paul Nicholls to get the lowdown on Denman’s road to recovery following his treatment for an irregular heartbeat.

The big horse looked in great nick, cantering up the famous Manor Farm gallop ears-pricked looking every inch the star he is. Tune in to tomorrow’s Morning Line for some more detailed quotes from the frankly brilliant Nicholls, who couldn’t be more accomodating in keeping the public up-to-speed with one of his favourites. He’s all systems go for a tilt at Newbury’s Aon Chase on February 7th, so fingers crossed he’ll be as good as ever.

It can be little wonder so many winners are sent out week after week by Nicholls, there’s a great buzz about the place that seems to have everyone smiling, right the way up from the lads doing the mucking out to the bloke who makes the decisions. First class.

Onto this weekend’s sport and opportunity knocks on an Ascot card jam packed full of quality action tomorrow afternoon, and I’m especially looking forward to seeing Lucy Wadham’s classy United serve it up in the Warfield Mares’ Hurdle at 2.50pm.

Off the track for 20 months after a fine third in the Champion Stayers’ Hurdle at the 2007 Punchestown Festival, she bounced back with a lively performance to see off Chief Yeoman at Haydock on the Saturday before Christmas, and said to have thrived since then, she’s going to take all the beating under the in-form Dominic Elsworth.

Her obvious long term target is the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and she should take this en-route.

On the same card I really fancy Free World to advertise his Arkle claims in the Montpelier Group Lighting Novices’ Chase (1.40pm). I’m still not quite sure how he managed to get chinned in the dying strides by the gutsy Araldur at Sandown last time out (Choc Thornton’s ride like a man possessed might have something to do with it!), but I fancy him to get back on the winning trail tomorrow afternoon at the expense of the highly touted Calgary Bay.

Free World’s November defeat of the Philip Hobbs trained Planet Of Sound now reads especially well after he came out and won a hot contest at Newbury earlier this week.

It’s a thriller in prospect, with the second and fourth in the Arkle betting going toe to toe, and it could be worth dipping back into the Arkle market to take a bit of 14/1 each way about Free World for the long term target. (This column already advised fellow Nicholls’ inmate Tatenen at 16/1 for the Arkle back in October).

I also like the look of Karabak in the National Hunt Novices’ Hurlde at 3.55pm. Alan King’s six-year-old caused a bit of an upset when he beat Nicholl’s Mahonia on Ruby Walsh’s comeback ride at Cheltenham in December, and he can go in again on his third try over hurdles.

He wants a fast pace and will definitely benefit from the step up in trip. Don’t forget only Mad Max has beaten him over timber so far, and he came out and won again this week too.

Lastly if you’re looking for one for the yankee at Ascot don’t miss Zaynar in the Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at 12.30pm. He’ll be no price, but the 7/2 favourite for the Triumph Hurdle ought to enhance his already lofty reputation earnt in fine style with an emphatic win on his Newbury debut a few weeks back.

PS, It appears the representatives of Manchester City Football Club weren’t having a laugh when they travelled to Milan to table a quite ridiculous €120m bid for Brazilian maestro Kaka. Beam me up! Unless Kaka’s on drugs or forced to sign at knife point there surely can’t be a prayer of him electing to exchange the San Siro for Stockport, Il Duomo for Dukinfield, Malpensa for Moston and pasta and olive oil for a nourishing dogfood pastie.

Even more remarkable is the fact that Skybet are still offering 10/3 about Kaka pulling on a Milan shirt in the first game after the absurd transfer window slams shut. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea,but I can’t resist a quid on him staying put.

Good luck!
Tom

Pierse the bookies with a winner at Leopardstown!‏

I’m off to Ireland to see a maximum field of 30 go to post for the big race of weekend in the shape of Leopardstown’s Pierse Hurdle (2.20pm Sunday), and it could well pay to side with an improving youngster at the foot of the weights.

You’re going to need a healthy dollop of lady luck having a bet in a race of this nature, but boost your chances by picking a horse and importantly a jockey with the nous and experience to navigate their way through the choppy waters of a rough and tumble big field handicap.

Well backed horses in the feature event so far this week include Tony Martin’s Psycho (at least joint favourite in every bookmaker’s list), Jessie Harrington’s Alpine Eagle, and Michael Hourigan’s Dancing Tornado.

All are well weighted since Newmill’s declaration has compressed the weights, and all three have plenty going for them, but the one I really like is Willie Mullins’ Imperial Hills at a tempting 10/1 each way with Paddy Power.

A penalty puts the tongue-tied five-year-old smack in on 10 stone proper, and the impression he created when winning a competitive 19-runner race over course and distance on the Sunday of the Christmas meeting was more than favourable.

Mullins’ horses are on fire at present, and although the form of his win that day gives the second horse Fen Game a cracking chance now he has a handy pull at the weights, I’m confident Imperial Hills is improving at a fast enough race to play a big hand in this.

Paul Townend’s win on Indian Pace in the Galway Hurdle was a typical display of assurance from a young jockey going places, and the fact he retains the mount on Imperial Hills can only be a bonus.

The other horse on the card who merits close attention is Tom Taaffe’s Finger On the Pulse; who lines up in the Leopardstown’s Handicap Chase at 1.45pm.

The weather ruled out a his latest Cheltenham tilt at the Boylesports meeting before Christmas, but the Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase winner at the Cheltenham Festival back in March ran a solid race behind the Noland at Down Royal in November, and aided by the fact Mister Top Notch runs to keep the weights down, he can get his name on the scoresheet in this weaker race.

The price won’t be anything spectacular (expect around 2/1), but with a revitalised Barry Geraghty doing the steering he has a great chance of gracing the winner’s enclosure.

Good luck!
