The King is back on Aintree Ladies’ Day – Friday’s Tips

Friday’s big race at Liverpool is an event to grace any major festival meeting, and looks worth the admission fee alone as 11 horses brimming with talent line up for the John Smith’s Melling Chase over 2m 4f at 3.10pm.

I honestly couldn’t rule any of them out of the equation 100%, even 66/1 rag Mahogany Blaze who ran such a fine race in defeat against Well Chief in Cheltenham’s Connaught Chase back in November.

With Ryanair first, second and fourth Albertas Run, Poquelin and Deep Purple back on parade, talented veteran and Aintree lover Monet’s Garden in the field, plus Queen Mother Champion Chase second and third Forpadydeplasterer and Kalahari King on show it’s got the makings of a thriller.

That said, the winner of the Maghull Novices’ Chase at this meeting 12 months ago Kalahari King is the one who ticks most boxes for me, he’ll love the return to Aintree’s flat, galloping speed track, and upped in trip he can get his revenge on Forpadydeplasterer who finished ahead of him in the Queen Mother, and see off a host of other dangers.

Albertas Run has certainly displayed more resolution on a more consistent basis this time around, but he too still has the tendency to chuck in a stinker and might turn it in after putting in such a big shift at Cheltenham.

I’m a fan of Poquelin too, but as at Cheltenham he might find one too good once more, and that can prove to be Kalahari King for Ferdy Murphy and Graham Lee.

He’s only had two races this season, the first of which was his mightily impressive Cheltenham prep-run when he sluiced up under top weight in a very tough Doncaster handicap.

He’s a class act and can win this for his top stable at a general price of around 7/2 but Willian Hill are offering a standout 4/1.

Earlier in the day there’s a topical link to my tip for the opening John Smith’s Top Novices’ Hurdle: the Bulldog editor of this column is a devout Escort man, cruising around in a clapped out F registered version of the car by very same name, one with the exhaust blowing and a couple of bald tyres, while he also subscribes to the magazine.

Still, don’t let that put you off backing Escort’Men for Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh – their four year old benefits from a 6lb age allowance and looks to hold an outstanding chance based on his romp in Kempton’s Dovecote Hurdle.

Kept fresh for this the sky’s the limit for this young horse, and he can sign off his first season in England with a major win on only his third start in this country. I think Aintree will suit down to the ground and the 3/1 available at Ladbrokes looks a good bet.

He obviously has a very good one to beat in the shape of Supreme Novices’ winner Menorah, but this could well be one race too many for him after he gave everything to see off Get Me Out Of Here at Cheltenham.

Don’t forget that Menorah isn’t immune to the odd blunder too, as demonstrated when he got turned over by Lush Life at Ascot in February when 1/2 favourite.

Good luck!

Friday’s best bets at Aintree:

2.00 – John Smith’s Top Novices’ Hurdle – 8 Escort’Men (win) @ 3/1 (Ladbrokes)

3.10 – John Smith’s Melling Chase – 5 Kalahari King (win) @ 7/2 (general, compare todays racing odds) or Best Price 4/1 with William Hill

‘What’ a bet on the first day of the Aintree National Meeting

Fast improving What A Friend can take advantage of a race likely to be run ideally to suit and upset Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Comander in this afternoon’s Totesport Bowl (3.10pm).

It’s only 20 days since Nigel Twiston-Davies’s star turn hacked up in the Gold Cup, but he loves Cheltenham like the locals at Aintree love a gift voucher for Tan-Tastic, and has consistently underperformed when turned out relatively quickly after a win.

What A Friend on the other hand may have the whip hand, what with Carruthers and Nacarat likely to go haring off out in front in a dispute for the lead to set the race up for him, Ruby Walsh doing the steering, proven form on a similar track such as Stratford, and a 100 day break since his big day at Leopardstown when taking the Dublin track’s Grade 1 Lexus Chase.

The official ratings have them nearly two stone apart, but the suspicion is What A Friend can expose a chink in the champ’s armour this afternoon and looks worth an interest at 10/3 with Bet365 and William Hill.

A little later on the card a typically compettitve field of 17 go to post for the Red Rum Chase (4.20pm), and at 18/1 each way with Stan James Colin Tizzard’s Oiseau De Nuit looks to hold a cracking chance if you put a line through his disappointment in the Grand Annual.

He made mistakes and soon weakened at Cheltenham, but Giles Hawkins looked after him and that could pay off this afternoon.

Bear in mind he went off only 8/1 for the Grand Annual, and down a pound in the weights is now 10 points bigger in a race that is certainly no more difficult.

Already a winner of five chases from 13 starts Oiseau De Nuit was in sparkling form pre-Cheltenham, winning at Ffos Las and finishing an excellent second to Kalahari King at Doncaster.

It’ll be no great surprise if he bounces back to form today.

Finally, in the Totepool Manifesto Novices’ Chase at 4.55pm The Nightingale can make it double disappointment for Somersby after his narrow Arkle defeat.

The Nightingale looks a serious prospect, as advertised by his stroll in the Pendil at Kempton, and Aintree’s flat speed track should suit him down to the ground.

Paul Nicholls was very bullish about him at an Aintree preview night last week, and after a nice break he could have too many guns for Somersby, who although a serious class act could pay the price for a massive effort in defeat to Sizing Europe.

Good luck!

Thursday’s best bets at Aintree:

3.10 – Totesport Bowl Chase – 5 What A Friend (win) @ 10/3 (Bet365 & William Hill)

4.20 – Alder Hey Imagine Appeal Red Rum Handicap Chase – 3 Oiseau De Nuit (each way) @ 18/1 (Stan James)

4.55 – Totepool Manifesto Novices’ Chase – 7 The Nightingale (win) @ 11/4 (Sportingbet)

Epsom Oaks & Derby Tips – Oxx & Kinane to leave them seeing Stars!‏

Epsom’s world famous Oaks and Derby fixture attracts racegoers of all shapes and sizes, and they’ll be flooding in in their thousands to witness two days of top class racing.

A field of 13 are scheduled go to post for the Investec Derby (3.45pm, Saturday), and I’m very keen on the chances of Guineas winner Sea The Stars becoming the first horse since Nashwan 20 years ago to do the double.

Immediately after his Newmarket success, big race jockey Mick Kinane said he’d be “some spin in the Derby”, and nothing I’ve seen in between times suggests he can’t follow up now he steps up in trip.
