Sweltering conditons and the 48 hour declaration of Guineas and Derby hero Sea The Stars means they’ll be packing into Sandown Park on Saturday afternoon for what looks set to be a top notch card at the Esher venue.
Sandown has to be one of my favourite tracks be it on the Flat or over the sticks – you can pretty much guarantee a decent crowd for the better days, the racing tends to be well above average, the facilities are in good nick and the viewing is excellent. That said they do have very excitable car park attendants, but you can’t have it all…..

Coral sponsor their big day on the level and have cleverly come up with some catchy new race titles for the afternoon’s action; of particular interest is the Coral Challenge Handicap over a mile at 2.40pm.

If like me you’re doing the sensible thing and boarding an Aer Lingus flight to Dublin and making the short hop to the Curragh this weekend then you’ve every right to be excited, for while John Oxx might not have made his mind up about Sea The Stars taking his place in the Irish Derby, everything else looks set fair for a cracking two days racing at the County Kildare venue under the gaze of the RTE cameras.
Just keep your fingers crossed your flight isn’t similar to the one I caught a short while back for the Irish Guineas weekend containing a hen party from St Helens, who chose the ideal location of the rear rows of a passenger aircraft to stage a fight over who exactly had earned ‘air miles’ with the prospective groom, so to speak. With the insults raging and a bout of shoving occurring at 34,000 feet my best piece of advice is not to let them catch you laughing. I know this to be good advice as I failed to heed it….

Tom is on holiday this week, so he has left his column in the trusty hands of the Betting Directory editorial team! Despite him sunning himslef in warmer climates, he has still found time to pick up the phone and point us in the direction of some value about potential winner – in the form of Yeats to win next week’s Ascot Gold Cup at an attractive price of 3/1, a price generally available with most bookmakers.
The Aidan O’Brien trained Yeats will be bidding for his fourth successive Ascot Gold Cup victory when he lines up for next Thursday’s Group One, 2 mile 4 furlong trip around the Berkshire track. Should he win, he will become the first horse ever to win the race four times and currently shares the record of three back to back victories with the great French horse of the 70s, Sagaro.
His first win in the race came back in 2006 when he won at odds of 7/1, when he proved that he loves every yard of this marathon trip and he followed up in 2007 and 2008 at odds of 8/13 and 11/8 respictively, with last year’s win being the most decisive with a winning margin of five lengths back to Geordieland in second place.

Many of the regular readers and followers of Tom’s Tips on this site will be eagerly anticipating Saturday’s Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket as they clutch their antepost vouchers on the back of Tom’s advice from the last few weeks.
Back in March, Tom advised an each way bet on Mastercraftsman to win the opening Classic of the Flat Season at odds of 7/1, and the Aidan O’Brien runner is now best price 9/2 following good support in the last couple of weeks.
Tom’s other tip for the 2000 Guineas came last month when he advised an each way bet on Delegator at odds of 20/1 on the back of breaking news that the Brian Meehan Colt had produced a great piece of work on the Gallops, news that was confirmed in style when he won the Craven Stakes over Course & Distance a week later. He is now the joint 7/2 to win the race.

While it’s still there snaffle a bit of 7/1 each way about Aidan O’Brien’s Mastercraftsman for the 2000 Guineas.
The winner of both the Phoenix and the National Stakes last year he’s being very highly touted by connections, and with stable companion Rip Van Winkle meeting with a setback he should be a lot shorter come the start of May - get on before the price is gone.
2000 Guineas tip:
Mastercraftsman (each way) @ 7/1 (bet365 or Ladbrokes)

The battle for Melbourne Cup favouritism has become as fierce as ever as the big race draws ever closer. Long term antepost favourite, Septimus, has been the subject to a market drift on Monday following concerns from Irish trainer, Aidan O’Brien, over the state of the Flemington ground, fearing that it could possibly be too firm for the son of Saddler’s Wells. As a result, it is another Northern Hemisphere Raider in the form of the Luca Cumani trained Mad Rush that has joined Septimus at the top of the betting. Both are generally available at 4/1 with most major Bookmakers with the Ballydoyle representative a best price 9/2 with Sportingbet and Stan James.
Despite the fears over the ground, Septimus still remains the class horse in the field and will take all the beating. If O’Brien does decide to run him, we must trust his judgement and believe that he has a great chance of winning and defying top weight.
Should Septimus not get the run then it may well be worth siding with another Irish runner in Profound Beauty, who has come in for plenty of noteworthy support in the last few days. Trained by two times winning Melbourne Cup trainer, Dermot Weld (most recently in 2002 with Media Puzzle), this filly can take advantage of the weights to end a progressive season in fine style.

The money shows no sign of slowing down for the Aidan O’Brien trained Septimus ahead of his tilt at next week’s Melbourne Cup. News that last year’s winner, Efficient, had been ruled out of the race was announced on Wednesday which saw all major bookmakers in Britain and Australia trim the price of Septimus winning the biggest race in the Southern Hemisphere. The son of Saddler’s Wells is now as short as 3/1 with many firms to win the race, but resident Betting Directory tipster Tom Lee of Channel 4 Racing pointed us in the direction of this horse back in August when it was chalked up at 10/1 in this article about Septimus Melbourne Cup Odds.
Anybody who missed the value can still snap up some of the 4/1 available with Ladbrokes, which still makes plenty of appeal.
