Heavy rain, thunder storms, plus generally atrocious weather conditions mean there has to be a degree of concern about backing anything at York on day one of the Ebor Meeting, a fixture which year on year has a habit of throwing up huge shocks.
The ground has already changed once there today, and may well do so again, so rather than get too carried away with how that may or may not impact upon the likes of Cracksman, Mirage Dancer, Barney Roy, Churchill and Ulysses, enjoy the action there but keep your powder dry for Worcester this evening.
It’s possibly significant that Dr Richard Newland didn’t run his handicap debutant, Vosne Romanee, at Southwell on Sunday, waiting instead for today’s extended two mile Startin Honda Handicap Chase (5.30pm).
A handicap off a mark of 133 looks realistic for a six-year-old who is rated slightly higher over hurdles, and won two over fences before a highly creditable second behind the talented Bagad Bihoue at Newton Abbot a month ago.
A left-handed track clearly suits him and it won’t matter how fast they go for the Sam Twiston-Davies’s mount.
Wednesday’s best bet:
