The noble Lord Oaksey, possibly the nicest man in racing, could be set for a memorable afternoon at Cheltenham as the strapping Carruthers lines up in the Gold Cup trial now known as the Argento Chase at 2.35pm.
Once a mainstay of Channel 4 Racing Lord Oaksey has been a tireless campaigner for the Injured Jockeys’ Fund for a number of years, and there’s no doubting who’ll get the biggest cheer of the day if seven year old Kayf Tara gelding Carruthers can stick his big head in front up the Cheltenham hill.
The absence of Denman (he goes for the Aon Chase at Newbury in a couple of weeks) will have disappointed the racecourse executive, but as long as the weather doesn’t strangle another keenly anticipated fixture (Clerk Simon Claisse tells me it’s forecast to be minus five tonight) they’ll be packing the stands at Prestbury Park for a meeting the crowds love.
You can’t get a hotel room for love nor money in Cheltenham tomorrow night, although depressingly my old pal Lord Culcheth will be in attendance and has already secured a duplex penthouse for the night in the town centre.
Expect the usual cougar hunting antics to be on display as he preys on any unsuspecting boozed up potential victims.
Back to the Argento though and the chances of headline selection Carruthers. He really appeals given that tissue favourite Madison Du Berlais has never been seen to the best of his sizeable ability here at Cheltenham.

The show is well and truly back on the road and isn’t life better for it?
Punters have finally got some proper winter sport to get their teeth into, Lord Culcheth has mysteriously disappeared to Berlin pursuing some hairy German cougar, the excellent Timmy Murphy has his thousand winners plaudits safely in the bag courtesy of a Taunton double, Cheltenham is just six and half weeks away, and a hero of Cheltenham’s past bounced back to remind us of former glories as 2006 Gold Cup winner War Of Attrition took the Galmoy Hurlde in some style at Gowran Park on Thursday.
Looking ahead to this weekend Jump racing afficionados will be licking their lips in the style of Preston carpet baron Bernard Dorsett (fans of cult C4 show Come Dine With Me will know exactly who I’m referring to), and understandably so.
In the Grade 2 Mares’ Hurlde over 3m at Ascot tomorrow afternoon I fully expect Donald McCain’s Whiteoak to stamp her class on proceedings after proving beyond doubt she stays the trip when hacking up at Kempton in November.
She does have to concede 5lb all round here, but I just cannot see that being a barrier to her getting her nose back in front.

A wide open looking 2m handicap chase at Catterick throws up the best opportunity of a winner to get the weekend off to a decent start, and Sue Smith’s Karmadice looks worthy of an each-way interest at 15/2 with Victor Chandler in the 3:30.
Reportedly back to his best after a couple of disappointing efforts he should make the frame here and could well return to winning ways. A more in depth look at this weekend’s action as well as the best tips will follow later today.

It may be a new year but some things never change: a Nicky Henderson treble at Southwell as the Nottinghamshire track staged an innovative all weather bumper card on Wednesday, Paul Nicholls’ horses being overbet and exploited by cunning bookmakers (have a look at Fistral Beach at Kempton on Saturday for a prime example!), a mass exodus of the racing fraternity to Barbados at this time of year, and Lord Culcheth, who regular readers will know is a permanent disaster waiting to happen, and has now been laid low by a cougar related virus.
But praise be! We’ve finally got a break in the weather and some decent turf action to get stuck into, and not before time…..it’s seemed like an eternity, so make up for it by having a few quid on top weight Duc De Regniere in the williamhill.com Lanzarote Hurdle (2.45pm Kempton).
The class horse in the race he shoulders top weight for a reason, but Nicky Henderson has wisely opted to give the very capable David Bass the leg up, with the added attraction of a 7lb claim.

With freezing conditions cutting the sporting calendar to ribbons punters are keeping warm by focusing on the big antepost targets, not least the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle betting, in which it could pay to make an early investment in Khyber Kim to continue his relentless improvement shown in the 2009/10 campaign.
A distant 22nd of 27 in last season’s County Hurdle this isn’t a horse you’d immediately have flagged up as a major player in the two mile hurdling showpiece, but a retun to the track at Prestbury Park in November yielded a facile win in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, as Kyber Kim powered up the hill under a light weight to see off Harry Tricker by a couple of lengths.
