Weekend Racing Tips From Ascot, Kempton and Dubai

We’ve searched far and wide in the hunt for a weekend winner, and although the Channel 4 cameras will be stationed at Doncaster for the start of the Flat, I’ll be keeping a beady eye on Ascot’s Independent Newspaper Veterans’ Handicap Chase (4.40pm Ascot Friday) where Philip Hobbs’ Out The Black looks primed to follow up his recent Donny win in this 3m contest.

The introduction of Veterans’ Chases has been a major triumph for the folks at the race planning department; with fields restricted to horses aged 10 and above they’ve breathed life into many an animal otherwise considered over the hill.

As for Out The Black, the 11 year old saw a renaissance in his form when winning an identical contest over course and distance (then rated 127) just under a year ago, seeing off Briery Fox (who re-opposes) by three parts of a length, and he’s been in decent form this term.

He ran a couple of solid races at Ascot before Christmas, and the handicapper was charitable in raising him only 3lb to a perch of 133 after his end of February Doncaster success.

Although he only beat Gidam Gidam half a length that day he was value for much further in my opinion, he idled close home and could well have won five lengths had he chosen to.

The forecast good ground will be a major boost, as will Richard Johnson resuming steering duties (he was on board when the selection won over C&D last April).

With conditions very much in his favour the bang in form Out The Black looks sure to run a very big race here.

At Kempton on Saturday I’ll be re-investing on the subject of last week’s column Bronze Cannon in the listed Magnolia Stakes at 3.35pm.

John Gosden’s four year old has a few pounds to make up on four of this eight runner field on official figures, but he ran a cracker to make us an each way profit when third in the Lingfield Winter Derby last Saturday (a race which wasn’t run to suit as it developed into a sprint finish), and he can continue his progress here.

We know Bronze Cannon is a confirmed Kempton operator having won both a maiden and a nursery there in his two year old days.

Don’t forget this time last year he was considered good enough to hold entries in both the Dante and the Derby, and although he clearly isn’t up to that standard I’d be more than hopeful he can make up into a Group 3 horse this season.

The other interesting detail is the booking of Nicky Mackay, a really talented pilot who had a tough time of it last year when he split from Luca Cumani. He’s been riding out for Gosden every day and rode a winner for him on 11/4 shot Sehoy at Lingfield on Wednesday.

The stable’s horses are really starting to motor with five winners and almost everything they’ve run making the frame in the last couple of weeks. Bronze Cannon can continue the hot streak.

Lastly make sure you don’t miss the coverage of the Dubai World Cup at Nad Al Sheba.

I suspect I won’t be needing too much factor 15 at Town Moor, but the lucky few who’ve escaped on expenses to the desert can extend their good fortune by backing Japan’s big hope Casino Drive to scoop the extraordinary £2.5m first prize.

He’s drawn right in the middle of the 14 in gate eight, and having run a belter in a very good time in Tokyo’s Group One February Stakes last time out I fancy him to take this stepping up in trip. Get on at 11/2 with Boylesports.

Good luck!

Tom’s weekend tips:

4.40 Ascot, Friday – 6 Out The Black (win)

3.35 Kempton, Saturday – 6 Bronze Cannon (win)

5.30 Nad Al Sheba, Saturday – 8 Casino Drive (win)

Weekend Non League Football Betting Tips

As we enter the final straigth in the Blue Squar Premier, it’s getting tight at both ends of the table. In the relegation battle, Forest Green need a couple of more wins to ensure safety and three more points should be on the cards today against already relegated Lewes.I suggest backing them in a double with Kettering who still harbour ambitions of a Play Off place. The best odds on the double are with Victor Chandler, where you can get 23/10.

To continue my good run of form with the longshots, I fancy Oxford to get at least a point at Stevenage and the away win at 9/4 is worth a punt with a saver on the draw, also 9/4 (both with Betfred)

Good Luck,
Mark Sale

Bronze can take gold as the tip for the Lingfield Winter Derby‏

He might have a few pounds to make up on the official figures but John Gosden’s Bronze Cannon can make the frame for us at 7/1 (general) in the sportingbet.com Winter Derby on Saturday afternoon (3.05pm).

Twice a winner on Kempton’s artificial surface the four year old has had a nice break since a slightly disappointing run at Lingfield in November, when he got squeezed up and lost ground at a vital stage in the listed Churchill Stakes, and with Ryan Moore booked he can certainly put his best foot forward here.

Before that Lingfield run he was seen to good effect when third at Newmarket, (the second horse that day Kirkless has subsequently been out in Dubai winning a handicap and finishing in the money twice in Group 3 company) and was positively thriving last Spring when twice a winner at HQ.

At that stage he held both Dante and Derby entries, and although this might be a more realistic level, he is undoubtedly viewed with high regard by his top stable.

Importantly we know he’ll stay Lingfield’s sharp 10 furlongs standing on his head, a statement which cannot be applied to hot favourite Premio Loco, who still has to prove he can handle the step up in trip, although he is a full brother to a mile and a half winner.

With that in mind I’d far rather be taking three times the price about Bronze Cannon. Back him each way at 7/1 with any of Bet 365, Totesport or Coral Bookmakers.

Good luck!
Tom

A Diamond each way bet for Friday‏

Sue Smith looks to have found Stagecoach Diamond a cracking opportunity to return to form and win his first race over fences at the age of 10 in Kelso’s John Smith’s Handicap Chase at 4.35pm on Friday.

A 120-rated winning hurdler Stagecoach Diamond is down to a mark of 108 over fences, and is certain to benefit hugely from quicker underfoot conditions.

He gets in with just 10 stone on his back, and that’s before conditional jockey Tjade Collier takes another valuable 3lb off.

Of the opposition you may remember injury prone top weight According To John finishing third in Denman’s SunAlliance back in 2007, while King Barry has been in sparkling form but is shooting up the handicap as a consequence.

Said to be flying at home Stagecoach Diamond can make his mark at likely odds of around 12/1. Get on each way.

Take route Fiftyone for a Friday winner‏

Nicky Henderson’s promising five year old Fiftyonefiftyone can build on a pleasing course and distance second and open his account over hurdles in the Zenergi Maiden Hurdle at Newbury this afternoon (2.40pm).

The penny had clearly dropped when he was only worn down by the decent According To Dick last time, and with nothing of that calibre lurking amongst today’s opposition he can score with the better ground in his favour.

Back him to win the race at 6/5 with bet365.

Get on Mastercraftsman for the 2000 Guineas‏

While it’s still there snaffle a bit of 7/1 each way about Aidan O’Brien’s Mastercraftsman for the 2000 Guineas.

The winner of both the Phoenix and the National Stakes last year he’s being very highly touted by connections, and with stable companion Rip Van Winkle meeting with a setback he should be a lot shorter come the start of May - get on before the price is gone.

2000 Guineas tip:

Mastercraftsman (each way) @ 7/1 (bet365 or Ladbrokes)

Day 4 Cheltenham Tips – All To Play For!

Surprises a plenty on day three of the Festival as Big Buck’s upset the big two in the World Hurdle and Imperial Commander showed his true colours in the Ryanair to down hot favourite Voy Por Ustedes. The same Big Buck’s who wasn’t even intended to be jumping hurdles this season just a short while ago….

Less surprising was a 577-1 handicap double for Venetia Williams courtesy of Kayf Aramis in the Pertemps and Something Wells in the Festival Plate. We knew she’d come to the party sooner or later, although Davy Russell’s delayed tactics aboard Notable D’Estruval in the Plate left a few observers scratching their heads.

All in all a bookmakers day – two odds jollies turned over to knock the stuffing out of punters, plus a gamble on Poker De Sivola going astray in the Kim Muir.

Still, hope springs eternal, here’s the plan for Gold Cup day:

1.30 – JCB Triumph Hurdle

Walkon can get punters off to a flyer and put a smile back on Choc Thornton’s face after he took a kicking in the Champion Chase. He looked a class act when winning here last time, and chief market rival Zaynar showed all the acceleration of a fridge freezer in a recent piece of work at Kempton Park.

He’ll be better on the day but he’ll have to be at his very best to stop the ultra tough Walkon – 5/1 with Toteport and Paddy Power looks the way to go. Zaynar came out on top last time they met, but Walkon looks primed to reverse that form.

Triumph Hurdle Odds
2.05 – Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle (Handicap)

Dave’s Dream goes in search of the Imperial Cup/Cheltenham £75,000 bonus here, but I fancy Sunnyhillboy to ruin that particular plot – a ready winner at the Open meeting in November he’s been kept fresh for this target since a December victory at Sandown – back him each way at 8/1 (general).

County Hurdle Odds

2.40 – Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Pride Of Dulcote can make his mark here – Alpha Ridge looks likely to make the running and set this up as a match between Cape Tribulation and Pride Of Dulcote. I have to favour Ruby Walsh’s mount on a testing track with the drying ground very much in his favour. The 7/2 with Blue Square and Paddy Power looks reasonable.

Albert Bartlett Hurdle Odds
3.20 – totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup

Kauto? Denman? Neptune? Madison?

Personally I’m Neptune Collonges all the way as he comes with none of the question marks associated with his more illustrious stablemates. This likeable grey continues to improve, was placed in the race last year, and looks sure to give his running.
The 6/1 looks a cracking each way bet with Bet365, Totesport and Victor Chandler.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

4.00 – Christie’s Foxhunter Chase

A contest I’m really looking forward to, with the chance to see Clive Smith’s distinctive colours back in the winner’s enclosure as Royal Auclair takes his chance in the Foxhunters. Now a 12 year old he’s run in all the top races down the years and can still be a force at this level following recent Hunter Chase wins at Sandown and Fontwell.

Back him each way at 10/1 (general)

Foxhunters Chase Odds
4.40 – Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

David Pipe matches Willie Mullins’ feat in the Bumper by saddling eight of the 24 runners in the race named after his father, and he can hit the target with Big Eared Fran, a horse who looked the real deal in winning at Sandown last Saturday. There’s 5/1 available with VCBet, Paddy Power and William Hill.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle
5.15 – Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase (Handicap)

Venetia Williams was firing on all cylinders on Thursday winning with 16/1 Kayf Aramis and 33/1 Something Wells, and she can notch again here with in-form Lorient Express.

The 10 year old is in the form of his life and can trouble the judge at 16/1 each way (general).

Grand Annual Chase Odds

Good luck!

Day Three Cheltenham tips – Voy Por the banker‏

Another cracking day here at Cheltenham with the headlines belonging to Ruby Walsh with a 14/1 treble (the first since Mick Fitzgerald notched a hat-trick back in 1999), Master Minded’s second Champion Chase win, and a major celebration for the Irish as they threaten to dominate this year’s Festival.

Horses crossing the Irish sea have accounted for a whopping eight of the 13 races run so far on days one and two, and there could be a couple more in the offing on Thursday:

1.30 – Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase

Tony Martin could be about to unleash one of his handicap specials as Northern Alliance lines up in the Jewson. Campaigned over fences this season he has shaped well at slightly shorter distances, and with Ruby Walsh booked he can take the opener at 15/2 with Paddy Power.

Jewson Novices Handicap Odds

2.05 – Pertemps Final (Handicap Hurdle)

A fiendishly tricky puzzle to work out this one, but I’m rowing in with an in-form horse in the shape of Jonjo O’Neill’s Synchronised, the winner of a key qualifier at Haydock on Valentines Day, and a horse on the up.

O’Neill’s string seem to be in good nick at present, and the Jackdaws Castle trainer shrewdly opts for the talents of 5lb claimer Richie Killoran in the plate to offset his 7lb rise for that Haydock win (Pennek, Heathcliff and Scriptwriter all reoppose, while second horse Tazbar is considered good enough to run in the World Hurdle).

Back Synchronised each way at 11/1 with Paddy Power, who are also paying out a very handy extra place 1/4 odds 1-2-3-4-5.

Pertemps Handicap Odds

2.40 – Ryanair Chase

Time to nail my colours to the mast with the banker of the entire meeting Voy Por Ustedes – a Cheltenham specialist whose Ascot demolition job against Gwanako and Tamarinbleu last time makes him mighty hard to beat here.

The eight year old looks better than ever this season, and I expect him to charge up the Cheltenham hill with the Ryanair at his mercy.

Don’t forget he’d be looking at wins in key Festival races for the past four years if it wasn’t for a certain Master Minded 12 months ago! There’s no joker in the pack to spoil his party tomorrow so get on at 11/10 with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes.

Latest Ryan Air Chase Odds

3.20 – Ladbrokes World Hurdle

The feature race can also go the way of the market leader with Kasbah Bliss a warm order to go one better than a year ago when second to Inglis Drever.

With the great ‘Ingles’ now living out a long and happy retirement it’s time for a new name at the top of the staying hurdle tree, and Kasbah Bliss showed in his Rendlesham romp that he’s the one to make his mark.

His Flat form during the Autumn was superb, winning a Group 3 and collecting prize money in the Group 1 Cadran on Arc weekend, and the World Hurdle trophy can go to back to France with echoes of the great Baracouda.

Back him at 5/4 with Paddy Power.

An honorable mention too for Mighty Man - he’s a massive 40/1 with both Totesport and Stan James, but even though this race is seen as a stepping stone to an assault on a third Aintree Hurdle, this horse returns from a two year injury layoff here showing signs he retains plenty of his old ability and could sneak a place at massive odds.

World Hurdle Odds

4.00 – Freddie Williams Festival Plate (Handicap Chase)

Arthur Moore’s Notable d’Estruval could be the answer here. I suspect his cunning trainer believes he has a well handicapped horse at his disposal, and at 10/1 (general) he can make the frame.

Freddie Williams Festival Plate Odds

4.40 – Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Memorial Handicap Chase

Traditionally viewed as one of the easier handicaps to win at the meeting this race can go the way of Nicky Henderson’s Shouldhavehadthat – twice a winner at Newbury this season he benefits from the assistance of top Amateur Sam Waley-Cohen in the saddle, and can take this at 9/1 with Betfred.

He beat National Hunt Cup winner Tricky Trickster earlier this campaign on Hennessy Day, and then followed up in December beating Kim Muir favourite Poker De Sivola. His rate of improvement means he can confirm that form here.

Kim Muir Betting Odds

Good luck!

Day Two Cheltenham tips‏ – Irish eyes are smiling

Thought for Tuesday: Hurricane Fly has to be some horse if you stop to consider he had runaway Mares’ Hurdle winner Quevega in rear in a Grade 1 hurdle at Auteuil in June, and then comfortably accounted for Supreme Novices’ winner Go Native by 10 lengths at Leopardstown in December.

Wait for him to reappear at Aintree or Punchestown. It’ll be some show if Tuesday’s Cheltenham results are to be believed!

Looking ahead to Wednesday, here’s the lowdown on the seven race card:

1.30 – National Hunt Cup

Jonjo O’Neill has his string in form at exactly the right moment and can score in the opener with Can’t Buy Time. This progressive looking chaser won with any amount in hand at Sandown last time, and off level weights in this Amateur Riders’ event he can take this for the Jackdaws Castle trainer.

The wise deployment of Wichita Lineman to Tuesday’s William Hill Trophy leaves this at the mercy of his stablemate, and he can take this en-route to a possible tilt at the Grand National. Coral are best price in the village at 11/2.

Latest National Hunt Cup odds

2.05 – Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle

I’m really looking forward to seeing Karabak strutting his stuff on the big stage. He’ll love the step up in trip, won in emphatic style last time out at Ascot, and has recently been paid the compliment of being purchased by JP McManus.

Choc Thorton loses the ride as a result of that deal (McManus’s retained jockey AP McCoy takes over) and Choc’s evident despair at losing the mount suggests he’ll go mighty close, and the popular Thornton has even nominated the six year old as his Festival banker. If you don’t agree watch the tape of him settling the issue at Ascot, he surged clear of some good horses.

There’s still some 7/2 available with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes.

Compare Ballymore Hurdle Odds

2.40 – RSA Chase

A big chance for the Irish horses to shine here, and I’m sweet on the chances of Willie Mullins’ Cooldine.

He looked the real deal in winning the PJ Moriarty Chase at Leopardstown last time, doing a nice favour for readers of this column, and clearly improved for the step up in trip.

The form has been well and truly franked by Moriarty second Forpadydeplasterer emerging to win the Arkle here on Tuesday, and Ruby Walsh chooses him in preference to the quirky What A Friend.

There are no stamina doubts where he is concerned, and he’s a confident selection at 9/2 with Coral.

For anyone looking for a value each way play in the race Casey Jones has to be high on the list – he beat the subsequent Irish Arkle winner Golden Silver at Punchestown in November, then sprang a 25/1 surprise when defeating Trafford Lad over 3m at Leopardstown.

RSA Chase Odds

3.20 – Queen Mother Champion Chase

This should be an exhibition round from undisputed two mile king Master Minded, but take a look at the betting without the favourite markets – both Briareus and Well Chief merit closer attention.

4.00 – Coral Cup

Many more competitive 28 runner handicap hurdles you’d be hard pressed to find, but don’t be afraid to back Michael Hourigan’s bang in form Dancing Tornado to make the frame at a hefty 18/1 with Coral. (who alongside bet365, Boylesports and Paddy Power are paying five places on the race).

In the form of his life at Leopardstown and Ascot the last twice this fella richly deserves to win a big one, and can make a big impact here with a mere 10st 3lb to shoulder.

Regular pilot David Casey is on board, and with the cheekpieces once again in evidence I fancy him to be right in the thick of it.

Coral Cup Odds

4.40 – Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

Nicky Henderson’s French import Miss Sarenne could be the one to side with here.

She would have won with plenty to spare at Plumpton first time up had it not been for an unfortunate skirmish with the final hurdle (the one that denied AP winner no.3000 no less!), and she can gain compensation on a far greater stage tomorrow.

This lovely prospect has been gobbled up by JP McManus since then and turns out in his silks in the Fred Winter, she’ll appreciate better ground and should be backed each way at 8/1 (general), or at 7/1 with bet365 who pay 5 places on the race.

Fred Winter Odds

5.15 – Weatherbys Champion Bumper

Willie Mullins saddles eight of the 24 runners in the bumper, but he could be frustrated by Dermot Weld’s Rite Of Passage, who’s been the subject of some upbeat reports from his great trainer, and has attracted strong support in recent days.

Already a winner at both Galway and Naas, he’s the one to be with in the bumper at 5/1 with Coral and William Hill. Don’t forget the concessions too – bet365, Boylesports and Paddy Power are paying 4 places on the race.

Champion Bumper Odds Comparison

Good luck!

Tips for Day One of the 2009 Cheltenham Festival – Bring it On!

Cheltenham is already alive with the hum of final preparations, the course looks in top nick, the ground is currently Good to Soft on both the new and old courses, and the forecast rain hasn’t yet arrived. Let battle commence!

Tuesday’s tips:

1.30pm – williamhill.com Supreme Novices’ Hurdle - Take a bit of the remaining 6/1 each way with SportingBet about David Pipe’s Torphichen winning the opening race of the Festival.

He was in a class of his own on his latest appearance at Sandown, the form of which has worked out really well.

Lob into the equation his handy 8lb age allowance and you have a decent argument for an investment. I know Pipe is keen on his chances, and don’t forget heavily backed favourite Cousin Vinny endured a rough ferry crossing from Ireland and didn’t eat up when he arrived.

Latest Supreme Novices Hurlde Odds

2.05pm – Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase – Long time favourite Tatenen looks to be the one to take a decidedly average looking renewal of this contest. He’ll appreciate a strong gallop, the lack of which was his undoing when beaten by Follow The Plan at Leopardstown at Christmas time.

He looked excellent when winning here at the Open meeting in November, and has the gears to take this for Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh. The 4/1 with bet365 looks a fair reflection of his chances.

Compare the Latest Arkle Chase Odds

2.40 – William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase – Top weight Star De Mohaison can stamp his class on this race and defy top weight.

The 2006 Royal & SunAlliance Chase winner hasn’t seen much racing since his Festival triumph, restricted by chronic tendon troubles.

However, with those injury worries now firmly in the past the eight year old, who ran his best race for a long time when a narrow second here under a big weight in a competitive December handicap, can make up for lost time.

It was touch and go whether connections launched him into a Gold Cup bid such is the high regard with which he is held, and at 10/1 each way with Boylesports he’s going to be very hard to keep out of the frame.

William Hill Handicap Trophy Odds

3.20 – Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle – With the rain forecast to arrive later this evening and 22 rivals to contend with I’ll happily take a watching brief where hot favourite Binocular is concerned.

Instead sniff out a bit of value and have a look at Ashkazar, currently a whopping 22/1 with VCbet, and last year’s winner Katchit, currently 14/1 (Champion Hurdle Odds Comparison).

Ashkazar ran a cracking trial in the Kingwell and is far too big at his inflated price, while Katchit seems to lit up at the sight of Cheltenham and could be a different horse on Tuesday afternoon.

Both should be backed each way with realistic chances of making the frame, and don’t forget bet365 are paying four places on the race.

4.00 – Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase (Handicap) – The quandry of which Enda Bolger horse to back is a teaser for fans of the Cross Country race, but I’m really keen on the idea of Garde Champetre following up last year’s runaway success.

While this time around he does face the imposte of top weight it didn’t prevent Spot Thedifference from winning this contest in 2005, and with Nina Carberry doing the steering I fancy him to fend off stablemate L’Ami. Get involved at 4/1 with Betfred or Victor Chandler.

Cross Country Hurdle Odds

4.40 – David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle - A race I’m thoroughly looking forward to! All the money in recent days has been for Willie Mullins’ Quevega, seemingly based upon one placed run in a Grade 1 hurdle in France on atrocious ground behind stablemate Hurricane Fly.

She won well enough last time out at Punchestown but didn’t beat much, and she runs into a streetwise opponent in the shape of Lucy Wadham’s United here.

United has some cracking form in the book: a former winner of Punchestown’s Champion Four Year Old hurdle, she also made the frame in the World Hurdle plus the Irish equivalent back in 2007, and has returned from a long absence looking as good as ever with wins at Haydock and Ascot.

The Ascot performance was only workmanlike, but she’ll appreciate a proper gallop and can reward her patient connections with victory on the big stage here.

Donald McCain’s decision to run Whiteoak in the Champion Hurdle has left the door ajar, and at 9/2 with Paddy Power United can take the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle.

David Nicholson Mares Hurdle Odds

Good luck on Day One!
