Nothing flat about this weekend’s Betting Tips

Here we go! Strap yourself in: one of the great weekends of the National Hunt season is primed and ready to swing into action, and here’s a few ideas to earn some shillings along the way.

We’ll strike early on Friday with a horse your correspondent has been waiting three months to see in the shape of Alan King’s Mount Helicon, who makes his English debut in Newbury’s 1.00 race the Q Associates Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle.

Thanks to Wikipedia for explaining the three-year-old is named after a Greek mountain – “one celebrated by Hesiod because two springs sacred to the Muses were located here: the Aganippe and the Hippocrene, both of which bear “horse” (ἵππος hippos) in their toponym. In a related myth, the Hippocrene spring was created when the winged horse Pegasus aimed his hoof at a rock, striking it with such force that the spring burst from the spot. On Helicon too was the spring where Narcissus was inspired by his own beauty”.

Anyway, if your punting tastes are more Ouzbeck than ouzo, content yourself with the following information:

A way ahead of tomorrow’s eight rivals on his Flat form when trained in France by the great Andre Fabre no less, he won twice in seven appearances on the level (both at Saint-Cloud), has been placed in a listed race at 1m 7f, and even finished fourth in Longchamp’s Group 2 Prix Noailles (beaten little more than a length).

He goes on a range of ground (he won on good and heavy) and has absolutely no concerns about staying the trip or race fitness according to the moles at Barbury Castle.

If that isn’t enough his stable rave about him, and if his hurdling technique is as good as the work watchers would have you believe, then he’s a penalty kick at Newbury tomorrow.

Inevitably the 33/1 antepost investment we advised about Mount Helicon in the Triumph Hurdle on here some seven weeks ago is long gone (now just 20/1 biggest with Ladbrokes), but row in with a bit of evens for Friday’s debut.

Perhaps he’ll eventually follow in the footsteps of his illustrious stablemate Katchit, winner of both the Triumph and Champion Hurdles, get yourself down to Newbury for a few early clues.

My old mate Lord Culcheth might have had a ruby or two too many of late, but he isn’t the only who’s suggested to me that Saintsaire could be worth a very small each way dabble when Saturday rolls ’round.

The quirky nine-year-old was held in high regard by Paul Nicholls and the team at Ditcheat not that long ago, but he seemed to fall out of love with the game, and ended up running abysmally in an appalling race at Uttoxeter back in April when last seen out.

What’s the attraction I hear you say? Fair question, but have a quick scout through his form figures, and you’ll see the race he contests at 1.35pm at Newbury, the Jim Joel Memorial run as the UK Hygiene Handicap Chase, is the very same one in which he’s bounced back to form with a victory the last two seasons on the spin.

Add to that the chance that a transfer to the immeasurably smaller stable of the capable Alex Hales has worked the oracle, (and the word is he’s trained him specifically for a pop at this race), and you’ll see why I’m prepared to risk a bit of my hard earnt at what looks certain to be a huge each way price.

The arguments will rage long and loud about what’s going to win the Hennessy at 2.40pm, but regular readers of this column will know my antepost voucher is hard coded with the words Character Building, and with 17 declared for the big race I see no reason to change my thinking now.

Racing off a nearly identical mark to when he was third in the race last year, John Quinn’s charge shoulders 10st 6lb, he remains unexposed as a staying chaser, and has the underrated Dougie Costello doing the steering.

He likes the track, is fit and raring to go after a bonus win over hurdles at Towcester, and will relish being back in the rough and tumble of a big field handicap chase. Take a bit of 7/1 each way with Bet365, he’s got a great chance of being in the money again this year.

If the Hennessy isn’t enough to get your pulse racing, then Newcastle’s big card is also live on Channel 4 if you’re sitting at home having a bet or two, and we’ve got a couple of cracking opportunities to back a winner.

Nicky Henderson isn’t exactly lacking for firepower when it comes to the two mile hurdling division, and one of his big guns Punjabi can take the WBX.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle by storm in the hands of Barry Geraghty.

The five-year-old ran some big races in defeat last season; second in the Tote Gold Trophy and third in the Champion Hurdle, but he finally got his name up in lights in Punchestown’s Champion Hurdle in April, before wins on the Flat at Newmarket and Sandown bought him a well deserved pick of grass and the opportunity to put his feet up for a month or two.

Said to have improved again over the summer holidays, he is going to be very hard to beat at Gosforth Park, even with the likes of former Champion Hurdler Sublimity and dual Fighting Fifth winner Harchibald in attendance – The standout quote of 11/8 with Coral reflects that very fact.

He’s going to go off a very warm order favourite, and the Geordies’ll be queueing ’round the block for a slap-up celebratory feast at Yummies takeaway in the Bigg Market if he goes in.

Finally, don’t be afraid to have a few quid on Harmong Brig to win the WBX.com Rehearsal Chase at 3.00pm on the same Newcastle card. His trainer Nicky Richards was already a fan of this race having won it with Direct Access in 2005 before Harmony Brig won it 12 months ago, and the omens are good for a repeat performance.

Just as he did before winning it last season he recently ran well at Cheltenham (6th to Parsons Legacy), and set to carry 10st 4lb, he can take a hand in what doesn’t look the strongest renewal of this valuable race.

Good luck!
Tom

Sound claims for a Thursday double‏

There’s a good word for Laredo Sound to pay the day’s expenses in Taunton’s 1.40 Audrey Chudleigh Memorial Beginners’ Chase.

A pleasing seasonal return at Ascot has put him straight for this, and with his stable going well of late the six-year-old can get us back on the winning trail.

Ground and trip are spot on, and Taunton’s sharp track should pose no worries since he won at both Lingfield and Southwell over hurdles last season. He also has no qualms about racing right-handed, as a glance at his form shows wins as a two and three-year-old at San Siro and Clarefontaine.

What’s more, chief market rival Deep Purple is an understandable exchange negative after his poor chasing debut at Wetherby, so side with Laredo Sound to score at the first time of asking over fences. Snap up a bit of 15/8 with William Hill.

A little later in the afternoon if you’ve got a few quid to play up then an investement on Nicky Henderson’s Larks Lad wouldn’t go amiss. The stable aren’t exactly shy when it comes to training a bumper winner, and they say this fella is easily good enough to take Newbury’s 3.45 race, the 2m 1/2f bumper. He should end up around 2/1, the best price in the morning with

Green light for Amber

Conditions looks perfect for Stagecoach Amber to return from a break with a visit to the winners’ enclosure in the Blue Square Poker H’Cap Chase at Wetherby this afternoon (1.50pm).

Nicely weighted with only 10st 4lb to shoulder, plus the assistance of Henry Oliver in the plate, the selection has been pleasing connections in his work and can win this at a general price of 5/1 with most bookmakers, including Ladbrokes who are offering a free £25 bet to all new customers.

Early Carol Singing?

Andrew Turnell’s High Carol hasn’t been seen for a whopping 648 days, but don’t let that stop you having an each way interest in the opener (12.30pm) at Kempton.

A small interest in the 11/2 quote with Sportingbet could pay dividends, as this son of Presenting is said to be ready to do himself justice after a frustrating period on the sidelines.

Boom or Bust with tip at Kempton!

The best bet of the day comes in Kempton’s 3.15 Ladbrokes H’Cap Chase, as in-form Nicky Henderson saddles Boomshakalaka in the 2m 4f contest at the Sunbury track.

His form figures in the latter part of last season are certainly nothing to write home about, but a strong word from Seven Barrows is that the eight-year-old course and distance winner is back at the absolute peak of his form, and ready to be unleashed on what is a winnable looking comeback.

Spoilt For Choice if Betting this Weekend

There’s top notch National Hunt action wherever you look this weekend, and here’s a handful of horses who can pay for their way:

They’ll be going loco for Mad Max in the opener at Ascot tomorrow, and with good reason.

This giant six-year-old son of Kayf Tara (twice a winner of the Ascot Gold Cup – so no stamina worries) will ultimately be a big noise in the staying chase ranks, but don’t miss his hurdling debut at 12.55pm (Friday) in the Nicholas Cunningham Memorial “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle, a great starting point for a horse who demolished the opposiiton when last seen in public in a Newbury bumper in February.

To say this lad is highly regarded is something of an understatement, and with the Henderson yard in electric form, expect a command performance from Mad Max. Those in the know at Seven Barrows say he hurdles like a natural – get on.

One horse who did hurdle like a natural was Victor Dartnall’s Lodge Lane, and there’s genuine excitement about his first try over the larger obstacles in the Devon County Show Exeter Novices’ Chase at 1.40pm (Friday).

He’s got loads of scope, and the way he tackled his hurdles firmly suggests he’ll be an even better chaser, although it’s worth bearing in mind he did reach the lofty perch of 147 last season.

A winner over 2m 3f in soft ground he loves at Exeter last season, he also won at Fontwell, and although he disappointed in the Albert Bartlett at the Festival (his blood was later found to be wrong), he bounced back to see off a very handy type in the shape of Tazbar at Perth in April.

The seven-year-old is the apple of his trainer’s eye, with Dartnall quoted this week as saying: “Lodge Lane has the potential to go even higher now he goes chasing. He has schooled very well and is an exciting prospect”.

I’d make the trip up Haldon Hill just to see him alone, but the presence of Jonjo O’Neill’s winning chaser and 156 rated hurdler Wichita Lineman in opposition means we’ll get a workable price about Lodge Lane.

You’re spoilt for choice on Saturday, but make sure you don’t forget to back another Nicky Henderson in-mate Binocular in Haydock’s Betfair Hurdle at 1.40pm on Saturday.

Nothing short of brilliant in four racecourse outings last season, the only horse to lower his colours was Captain Cee Bee when he still emerged with huge credit as runner up in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

His final performance, slamming the Triumph winner Celestial Halo by seven lengths at Aintree, made plenty of people sit up and take notice. Rightly so.

He has youth on his side, great technique, and in a race restricted to four-year-olds has to be the nap bet of the weekend. While you’re at it, if you haven’t already, snaffle a bit of 11/2 with Coral for the Champion Hurdle at next year’s Cheltenham Festival. He’ll be shorter on Sunday morning.

Don’t forget this column’s antepost portfolio already contains Tatenen at 16/1 for the Arkle, Mount Helicon at 33/1 for the Triumph and Character Building at 8/1 for Hennessy Gold Cup.

Last up, don’t get in my way on the M42 on the way to Birmingham airport on Saturday night, it’ll be a close run thing making the flight to Dublin, but all being well I’ll be present and correct at Navan on Sunday to see Paul Nicholls try and continue his winning streak across the Irish sea in Navan’s Troytown Chase (2.30pm).

Officier de Reserve carries English hopes in the Irish feature, and at 5/1 he rates a sound each way investment with bet365.

He proved his well being with a win over hurdles at Warwick at the beginning of the month, a performance which proves his summer wind op did the trick.

Soft ground and three miles are the perfect combination, and if you can forgive the fact he jumped like a diseased goat in the Kim Muir, he makes plenty of appeal. What’s more, the booking of Davy Russell to do the steering should help immeasurably.

Good luck!
Tom

Rely on Quentin for the day’s ‘Ex’penses

The best bet of the day looks to be at Market Rasen, in the 2:40 Langley Solicitors Handicap Chase, where Quentin D’ex can make up for a blunder last time by scoring at the Lincolnshire track. Be quick and snap up the 2/1 currently available about the Charlie Mann runner with william hill.

Get in Character for a Bet on The Hennessy Gold Cup

With Exotic Dancer all set to take on his old adversary Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase this Saturday it means the Hennessy weights are set to rise by a minimum 16lbs, good news if you’re eyeing the antepost lists for a likely contender lurking out of the weights in the mid 130’s.

Coming into Newbury’s big race of the year off a fair mark of 138 is John Quinn’s Character Building, third in the race to Denman 12 months ago when rated 135, and trained specifically for this target by his shrewd handler.

If there’s a a worry that his 2007/08 season ended prematurely due to injury then a winning re-appearance over hurdles at Towcester last month proved his well-being, as he stayed on up the stiffest of hills to see off Shannon Springs and put him spot on for Saturday week.

He’s fit and well, we know stamina won’t be an issue since he was second in the Cheltenham Festival four miler in 2007, he goes on literally any ground, and has form at the track. An each way investment at Sportingbet at odds of 8/1 looks to be the way to go.

No Greater Love

You can’t get much further removed from the stellar sight of top quality chasers thundering up the Cheltenham hill than Fakenham’s Weatherbys Bank Conditional Jockeys’ H’Cap Chase, but a winner’s a winner, and that’s where we’ll head to see Charlie Longsdon’s No Greater Love bid to follow up his recent Stratford win at 1.30 this afternoon.

Up against a desperately weak field, his only serious opposition is likely to be the weather (any more rain would be a negative but the current good ground is fine), Silvergino – who won an egg and spoon contest at Southwell last time and is far more likely to resume his favoured losing streak, especially since the assessor gave him a pat on the back and a ridiculous 9lb rise in the weights, and 10-year-old Beau Torero - who loves the track and won this very race a year ago, but has shown little in between to provide encouragement.

Even back on ‘home’ territory I don’t expect Beau Torero to have enough guns to see off a young horse who has clearly benefitted from a change of yard and is in good heart. Take the 6/4 guaranteed about No Greater Love with Stan James or Paddy Power.

A ‘Great’ Sunday‏ In store at Cheltenham

Nicky Henderson’s outfit can do little wrong at present, and the good run can continue in tomorrow’s feature race, as Aigle D’Or returns from a 247 day break in the Greatwood H’Cap Hurdle.

The Seven Barrows handler did this column a big favour last week with Duc De Regniere notching a 5/2 success at Kempton, and there could be more reason to celebrate when Cheltenham’s feature race ticks ’round at 2.20pm.

Aigle D’Or was a very handy campaigner on the Flat, winning a listed race at Lyon, before joining Henderson in a move which immediately bore fruit; hurdling wins at both Lingfield and Cheltenham.

Those successes lead to the five-year-old Halling gelding being sent off 4/1 favourite for the Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, but he simply failed to run his race and fluffed his lines on the day.

Put a line through that performance and instead focus on the word from within the Henderson camp that this horse could well be a real star this season, and suddenly his current handicap mark of 140 starts to look rather generous.

It’s no surprise he’s been so well supported over the last 24 hours, but take a slice of the 3/1 (guaranteed by Stan James) and sit back and enjoy!

The Greatwood isn’t the only quality contest on offer tomorrow though, with Punchestown’s Maplewood Developments Hurdle more than making up for what it lacks in numbers with sheer quality.

Only five go to post for the big race over the Irish sea, but what a five; and emphatic recent Down Royal winner Jered can stamp his undoubted class and re-enfore his Champion Hurdle claims, 8/1 with Paddypower at this early stage.

At evens on Sunday, he makes far more appeal than chief market rival Sizing Europe, who may be more than a tad ring rusty having not been seen out since last season.

Finally, don’t miss Tatenen’s latest outing in the opener at Cheltenham (1.10pm). He gets handy allowances as a four-year-old, and can put his rivals to the sword to get the day off to a winning start for favourite backers.
