Labisa Has Great Chance at Wolverhampton

There’s some value to be had in the fillies’ maiden run over the extended mile at Wolverhampton this evening where Hughie Morrison’s well-bred youngster Labisa can make the frame at the third time of asking.

She showed some improvement in a much more competitive race at Donny last time, and if taking to the surface will be an each way bet to nothing, with the 6/1 on offer with Ladbrokes worth an interest to get the weekend off to a healthy start.

The stable are in good nick & the word from within is that this daughter og High Chaparral can continue the trend.

Weekend Premiership Treble Makes Plenty of Appeal

As we look to keep our good run of racing tips going, we may as well try an exploit our run of good fortune and turn our hand to a weekend football bet.

Look no further than our very own Premier League for a value treble this weekend with games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday set to provide plenty of ammunition for the week ahead:

First up Middlesbrough can make home advantage pay against out of sorts West Ham – ‘Boro aren’t easy to beat on their own patch, and with confidence high after a good result in midweek (they beat a far superior team to West Ham) they can oblige at even money against the out of sorts Hammers.

In Sunday’s 4pm live game, you get the impression Bolton must wonder where their next goal is ever going to come from, and it all points to a massive opportunity for Mark Hughes’ jekyll & hyde Manchester City outfit to wrest spoils from the Reebok at round 11/8. They might be a liability at the back, but they can certainly outscore the Trotters.

Last up the best bet of the three looks to be 6/4 shots Aston Villa, who can halt Joe Kinnear’s mini-revival on Tyneside by beating Newcastle on Monday night at St. James’ Park. Villa are a slick unit under Martin O’Neill and will fancy their chances of a successful away day.

Weekend Premiership Treble
Middlesbrough to beat West Ham
Man City to beat Bolton Wanderers
Aston Villa to beat Newcastle United

A successful £20 treble would return £237.50 with Stan James – If you are a first time customer, make sure you take advantage of their £25 free bet.

Check The State of Play before betting on the Charlie Hall Chase

This is one of my all-time favourite weekend’s of the National Hunt season, bringing with it a race which has been kind to me down the years, in the shape of the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase.

A small but select band of hardened chasers going at it hammer and tongs for 3m 1f around Wetherby’s left-handed galloping track – what more could you ask for on a Saturday afternoon? Predictably it’s a no show for War Of Attrition who’ll continue the comeback trail on more forgiving ground, but no matter, it’s got more than enough key characters to make it a cracker.

Favourite with the sponsors is none other than Ollie Magern, already a two-time winner of this race in 2005 and 2007, the 10-year-old is something of a cult figure at Nigel Twiston-Davies’s Gloucestershire base, and a big favourite of mine having paid for my holidays last winter with a bold display in this very race.

No doubt about it he is a star, and they’ll raise the roof if he can make it three, and there’ll be plenty willing to take the 11/4 with the Twiston-Davies team in such rich form, but since he’s lugging a 10lb penalty around this year I’ve a suspicion it might be time to etch another name on the trophy.

No, not Manchester City, and not Turko either, as while I do believe the six-year-old can mature into a top rank staying chaser as the season progresses, the youngest horse in the field might have to give best to a more experienced rival. It’s also worth pointing out he pulled up in this event last season, and having ended up on the deck in the National last time out, we’ll look elsewhere.

Plenty of punters will be happy to snap up an each way friendly price of 6/1 about the winner of another bet365 sponsored race, in the form of veteran Monkerhostin, third in this race 12 months back, and who keeps finding a happy excuse to postpone his retirement at just the right time – proven by his 25/1 win in the old Whitbread Gold Cup back in April. A wind op saw return him to best effect that day, but that was in a race that’s becoming something of a back-number among the top chases, and I think we’ll oppose him with a horse who has form at the track, and loves nothing better than returning to the job after a lengthy holiday.

With those clues I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise that the horse carrying my hard-earned will be Evan Williams’ 2006 Hennessy winner State Of Play – a totally different proposition when he’s a fresh horse, and a decent second in the race 12 months ago.

This strapping eight-year-old son of Hernando was sent off favourite here last year, and showed a liking for the track which this time around could well provide his first win for two years, especially since this season he can re-opposes Ollie Magern a mighty 16lb better off. State Of Play is reported to be a stronger horse this year, and having summered well, this race can provide the launch pad for a more consistent campaign. Yes, his 2007/08 form beyond the Charlie Hall was nothing to yell about, but he’s got so much going for him heading into this race, with ground on the quick side of good unlikely to harm his chances, and the Williams stable firing in the winners from all angles, I’m happy to take a slice of the 7/2 on offer at <>a href=”http://www.betting-directory.com/bookmaker-bet365.php”>bet365.com.

3:35 Wetherby (Saturday) State of Play to win @ 7/2

Predateur Expected to take advantage of his prey at Startford

Predateur hasn’t been without his problems in his short career, but a summer to iron out the creases is reported to have done him the world of good, and this Paul nicholls trained horse can take the Beginners’ Chase at 1.50pm with Sam Thomas doing the steering. He is 11/8 with a Ladbrokes.

Good Karma Expected at Newcastle on Thursday

The word from the West Yorkshire stable of trainer Sue Smith is that the unraced six-year-old Karmadice can get competitive in this afternoon’s Conditional Jockeys’ Maiden Bumper at Newcastle at 3.30pm.

A brother to bumper winner Minster Missile and out of a Mandalus mare Manietta who also won a bumper – connections report he’s in great form ahead of his racecourse debut and can make the frame at a generous each way price of 9/1 with SportingBet.

Tatenen Clear Favourite for Arkle after Aintree Display

Tatenen is the clear favourite for the Arkle Chase at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival following his convincing win at Aintree on Saturday and perfect ride courtesy of Ruby Walsh in the saddle. The Paul Nicholls trained four year old didn’t foot a wrong over the 2 mile trip and anyone who followed Tom’s advice in his weeky horse racing tips last weekend will be keeping their antepost voucher in a safe place after Tatenen was advised at 16/1 to win the Arkle, a price that soon evaporated after the race. Odds of between 5/1 and 6/1 are generally available about him winning the Arkle, with VCBet the stand out at 13/2.

Septimus Odds Continue to Shorten ahead of Melbourne Cup

The money shows no sign of slowing down for the Aidan O’Brien trained Septimus ahead of his tilt at next week’s Melbourne Cup. News that last year’s winner, Efficient, had been ruled out of the race was announced on Wednesday which saw all major bookmakers in Britain and Australia trim the price of Septimus winning the biggest race in the Southern Hemisphere. The son of Saddler’s Wells is now as short as 3/1 with many firms to win the race, but resident Betting Directory tipster Tom Lee of Channel 4 Racing pointed us in the direction of this horse back in August when it was chalked up at 10/1 in this article about Septimus Melbourne Cup Odds.

Anybody who missed the value can still snap up some of the 4/1 available with Ladbrokes, which still makes plenty of appeal.

Breeders Cup Preview

What a weekend in store! Top class racing of every discipline everywhere you look, and punters with an eye on the European invasion of the Breeders’ Cup will be itching to get started later on Friday night.

The big antepost gamble of the meeting so far has seen Bobby Frankel’s Ventura halved in price by all the firms over the last couple of days (generally 5/1 from 10/1 but as short as 7/2 in places) for Friday evening’s Filly & Mare Sprint, and her speed played late on could well put the bookmakers 1-0 down, but we’ll wait for Saturday for a couple of decent chances:

One of those is US Ranger, sent over by Aidan O’Brien for the Breeders’ Cup Mile (8.15pm Saturday) and each-way at 12/1 with bet365 and Blue Square (bigger on the American Tote) he can make the frame at a tasty price.

Obvious dangers include French-trained short-priced jolly Goldikova, winner of her last three after twice running into the roadblock which is Zarkava, plus last year’s winner Kip Deville, but at their likely short prices we’ll shop elsewhere.

As I mentioned above US Ranger will go off at a monster price on the American Tote, so it may pay to wait and take the local price as year-on-year we see the ‘away team’ available at hugely inflated odds.

What’s in his favour? He might be tricky to win with, but he’s been knocking on the door in a heap of top races, and could well appreciate the step up in trip on a track that could bring out the best of him, with tight bends and an emphasis on a speed finish which could well see the four-year-old son of Danzig in the shake-up.

Also on the Turf track Eagle Mountain can give South African master trainer Mike de Kock a long overdue Breeders’ Cup success in the aptly named Breeders’ Cup Turf (11pm Sat); out injured for 12 months after running second to Literato in the 2007 Champion Stakes, he bounced back on his first run for de Kock at the first time of asking at Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting to take the Group 3 Joel Stakes.

The word is that winning re-appearance has done him a world of good, and at a standout 6/1 he rates a cracking each-way prospect with Ladbrokes.

A quick word about the all-weather surface: Santa Anita’s synthetic ‘Pro-Ride’ track is likely to ride on the fast side, and we should see a successful trip for several European raiders, with underfoot conditions likely to inconvenience many of them far less than the dirt they would otherwise have encountered.

The chief beneficiary of which could be Henrythenavigator. The Breeders’ Cup Classic (11.45pm) looks set to be a corker, and he can punish a generous quote of 8/1 from both Blue Square and Sporting Bet.

A four-time Group 1 winner including both the English and Irish Guineas, St James’s Palace and Sussex Stakes in consecutive races, the obvious concern is he has never raced over further than a mile, but let’s not forget it wasn’t many moons ago he was being talked about as a potential Derby horse, and the race could be run to suit.

He loves firm ground, and sees his races out like a runaway train, and in my book ‘Henry’ looks a far more attractive each-way investment at the current prices than reigning champ Curlin, who has looked as if his ‘powers’ could be on the wane in recent appearances.
The stats are miserable for horses returning to the race after having previously been placed in it, and we’ll row in with ‘Henry’ at a value price to at least make the frame.

Money to be made on Cheltenham Contenders at Aintree

It might five months away, but for a couple of horses prominenet in antepost lists, the road to Cheltenham starts at Aintree tomorrow, and with the big battalions heading for the North West, I’m looking forward to seeing Tatenen make a much-anticipated chasing debut in the Intercasino.co.uk Molyneux Novices’ Chase at 1.35pm.

Long talked about by Paul Nicholls as his possible 2009 Cheltenham Festival Arkle Chase horse, this sturdy classic jumping type gets a handy four-year-old allowance in a field of just five.

He was deliberately put away with the 08/09 campaign in mind after Festival trials day back in January, and can put his rivals to the sword at the first time of asking over the larger obstacles.

His price won’t be anything to write home about, but the 16/1 Arkle quote with Coral could look generous come Saturday night.

On Sunday it’s the turn of another star Ditcheat resident to strut his stuff as Pierrot Lunaire launches his campaign in the Intercasino.co.uk Four Year Old Hurdle at 2.40pm.

They way he routed a decent field over course and distance in the Class 1 Littlewoods Direct Imagine Appeal Top Novices’ Hurdle back in April was especially impressive, and the fast, flat, left-handed track suits him to a tee.

This race looks a two horse race on paper, and although Squadron has the benefit of a recent run (behind current Champion Hurdle 3rd favourite Crack Away Jack at Chepstow), plus being burdened with 4lb less than his rival after winning a Class 2 at Cheltenham in April, he wasted valuable ground by jumping to his right last time out, and may again run into one too good in Pierrot Lunaire.

A word of caution though for anyone considering snaffling a bit of the 14/1 with VCBet for the Champion Hurdle – all his best form has come on flat tracks, and others make more appeal in the current antepost list.

Weekend Bets

Saturday 25th October
Tatenen 1:35 Aintree

Sunday 26th October
Pierrot Lunaire 2:40 Aintree

Antepost Bet
Tatenen in the Arkle 16/1 with Coral.co.uk

Scots Dragon looks set to get the Weekend off to a flying start

My visits to Fakenham are none too frequent, but a trip to the Norfolk track is a necessity tomorrow to watch Scots Dragoon take his chance in the Geoff Hubbard Memorial Novices’ Chase at 3.50pm.

The six-year-old son on 1997 St Leger winner Silver Patriarch has made a handy transition to fences, winning on just his third time up at Huntingdon 10 days ago, and he can continue the winning thread against just five rivals, all of whom have question marks against them.

Expect regular pilot Felix de Giles to make plenty of use of him dropping back in trip, tactics which can see him continue the winning habit.

The Nicky Henderson stable are in good nick after winning the Cesarewitch with Caracciola on Saturday, while de Giles booted home First Point in a handicap hurdle at Ludlow on Thursday to put a smile on the face of the Seven Barrows handler.

The best odds available on Scots Dragon in the morning are Evens, generally available, although, backing at either Stan James, Paddy Power or Bet365 is recommended as they all offer best odds guaranteed on all races.
